Deja Vu-ish

When I was plotting my latest Silhouette Desire, WEDDING AT KING’S CONVENIENCE, I decided to set it in one of my favorite places in the world. Ireland.   The first time I went to Ireland, I was 18 and I went with my best friend, Patti. We had saved our money for a year to make that trip and no trip since, no matter how fabulous, has had the same sense of excitement and adventure!

I fell in love with Ireland the moment I saw it from the plane. And when I stepped outside and was slapped with that cold, Irish wind…my first thought was, I’m home.  Odd, right? I thought so too, at the time.

But there was something in my soul that responded to that country instantly. My great-great-however many great grandparents had emigrated to the US from Ireland many years before, but I felt as though I, personally, had been there before. We drove down a narrow road inhabited mostly by sheep and when we took a curve and came out on top of a hill staring down into a valley, I knew that place. I’ve been back many times since that first trip—including dragging my Sicillian husband around—and every time, Ireland welcomes me back.

So what better place to set WEDDING AT KING’S CONVENIENCE? I even set my heroine Maura’s farm in the place where we last stayed. In Shanvallyard, Tourmakeday in County Mayo. This is a view from the front of the cottage...oh yeah.

I really hope you’re enjoying the King men as much as I am writing them. There’s nothing like a rich, powerful man brought to his knees by love, is there?

Now, tell me. Have you ever visited a place that your soul recognized? One of today’s commenters will receive a signed book!

Been there before

Yes, when I was a child we were in the Ozark Mountains with my aunt and uncle and before we went around this one curve I knew what was around the corner. Don't know how because to my knowledge I had never been there before.

Morning, Maureen

Beautiful picture of Ireland. I've never been to Europe but whenever I see pictures of Ireland or Scotland I'm in awe.  I set a lot of my stories in Arizona and immulate a town that looks like Sedona.  If you've been there, you know there's a special aura about the place, the red rock mountains, the blue skies the amazing foliage, It's known as an artists community too and the history in that area is fascinating.  For for me, it's Sedona!  But Disneyworld comes a close second cause I'm really a kid at heart! Oooh. Now see, that's interesting. A friend of mine was once touring Stone Mountain and saw an old (1870's)picture on the wall in the museum. My friend suddenly raced for the door, completely freaked out. She told me later, that when she looked at that picture, she knew it was of HER. She remembered exactly what they had been doing when the traveling photographer had come to town!

Now see, I've never been to Sedona....frankly its the whole heat thing that keeps me away! LOL...But isn't it weird how different places grab at us?

My grandmother was always drawn to China and never got to visit. I've never been interested in going to Asia....so I really do believe that our past lives influence us a lot.

my soul recognized

Edinburgh and Paris.  I haven't been back to Paris but every time I go back to Edinburgh it feels welcoming.

Loved

that you took the book and set it in Ireland. Sadly I haven't travelled (the lotto man is just not cooperatingUndecided) but I'll be adding this part of Ireland to my list

I just love the cover of

I just love the cover of your book. I'll take a man with rippling muscles any day. lol. I've never been out of the country but would love to travel. I'm planning a trip for either 2010 or 2011 to go by myself to tour China. My husband doesn't have any desire to travel so I would like to go before I'm too old to want to be on a 22 hour plane ride. I love reading historicals because they take me away to all those wonderful places.

Hi Maureen

When I visited Charlotte, NC in 1993, I knew instantly I wanted to move here.   It just felt like home to me.  I have never had this feeling when I visited anywhere else.   So, I went back to California, quit my job and moved here.  Been here 16 years now.   I read all 3 books in your Kings of California series and really enjoyed them.   This new series sounds wonderful and I concur - great cover.  I will get them all soon.

Your cover...

... is so beautiful and sexy! Ya know, I think I've loved every King cover, but this one is particularly yummy!

Maureen, the first time I crossed the border into Scotland, I felt that feeling of being "home." I get back there as often as possible and love it more every time. Smile

Mine is Egypt

Egypt calls me! Since I was a little girl, I feel drawn to Egypt... and ironically my name is Caira. It is not related to El-Cairo in any way, though. My mom swapped the a and i in my sister's name Ciara (Irish name) and got my name that way.

Whenever I see images / videos of Egypt, just like you said, it feels familiar. I've never been able to visit it though.

XOXO

Deja Vu

I haven't had much of an opportunity to travel, but know I was glad to return home after travelling to Japan. I'm guessing that had more to do with the lack of space and greenery in Japan, where as I've grown up with that stuff here in NZ.

I would love to visit the US, Canada, Ireland and the UK when I get the chance to travel tho. I'm loving the cover of this Kings book too.

I love the view! I would

I love the view! I would love to go to Ireland and Italy. Maybe someday I'll get a chance to.

When I went to Florida in september to visit my cousin it felt like home. Being the first time away from home (for 10 days) I thought I would be home sick, but turns out I didn't. I missed my family, but I could have stayed. Almost did if not for my kitty. Never thought anywhere but home would feel like home. I was pleasantly surprised.

Hello again!

I can only think of Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada.  I just love the mountains, the peacefulness, the wildlife, the snow, the non-snow, etc.

I am very fortunate to have my sister and her family living near Calgary, so when I visit them, I get to visit the mountains (many times per visit).  We just hop in their motor home and go toodling around various areas of the park.  We go to the Hot Springs Pool and laze about, gazing at all the nearby mountains.  We take the gondola lift up a mountain and/or hike the mountains.  We go geocaching in the mountains (where permitted nowadays).

It's "da bomb".

Chey

I felt that in Edinburgh, too. Staring up at the castle, i could have sworn I'd seen it before.......

Paris I loved, but nope, no recognition!

Maureen

Janet

Good for you!  Just go on that trip! Even better....talk a friend into traveling with you! Or on a tour, maybe. It's always nice to be able to nudge someone and say "Isn't that gorgeous??"

Maureen

Tammy

How great is that that you moved to where your heart is!  I love that! Never have been to NC, but I loved SC when i visited my friend Amy J. Fetzer in Beaufort......Gorgeous place, but again...I have heat issues! LOL

Thanks for the kind words on the cover, it is gorgeous, isn't it?

Maureen

Kate

Thanks!  And I so hear you on Edinburgh. We've talked about this before. And there is just something about that city that pulls me in. But then, I love the raw, untamed feel of Scotland. It's magical.

Maureen

Caira

Your mom is a clever, creative woman!

You should find a way to go visit Egypt, girl! Make a plan and then follow though on it. You should always reach for your dreams!

Maureen

Lyn NZ

Ah now, I'd love to visit New Zealand! But oh my, the thought of that plane ride makes me reconsider! LOL... But I've heard it's gorgeous, so who knows, maybe I will one day!

And thanks for the cover vote! Isn't it great?

Maureen

You know, even when i was 18, if I hadn't had my boyfriend (now dh) to come back to, I would have stayed in Ireland. It felt...right to me~!

And there are so many incredible views there. Everywhere you look. The one on this blog is the one I had every morning with my cup of tea! Lovely way to wake up!

Maureen

Laney

Hi! thanks for coming by.......You know, there are so many places here that I'd love to see. For example Canada....I've heard wonderful things about Calgary or British Columbia. One of these days, I'm going to throw the dh in a car and have a nice long road trip!

Maureen

Wow

Your view was awesome. I would love to see that in person. I have only left the US once. I went on a cruise to the bahamas. I did not have the deja vu feeling though. I loved every minute of the trip though it was beautiful. As far as deja vu I have had that feeling with several different places. A few summers ago we went to Myrtle Beach I hadn't been there since I was 11 and all I could remember was that the sand was beautiful. As far as I know when I went summer of 2005, I knew immediately where everything was and didn't have to ask for directions to anything. I just knew how to find it all. You would have thought I grew up there.

Jessiecue

Good story!  I'd love to see Myrtle Beach myself....=)  I do love traveling. I love seeing new places and waiting for that DejaVu feeling......

Maureen

Maureen,

Like you, I loved Ireland.  Of course, my maternal great grandmother emigrated from Ireland, and her son, my grandfather, looked more like a leprechaun than anything.  He was 5'3" tall and probably weighed 97 lbs. or so, and he lived to be 96 years old.  (He was born in 1879 and weighed 1.5 lbs. at birth -- as weighed on a grain scale -- and was kept in a home-made incubator: a shoe box set by the pot-bellied stove.)

Heidelberg also called to me.  It was so lovely and quaint, and I loved that it was largely a pedestrian, college town.  So it had the vitality that college students bring to a town, but it had the ancient, quaint atmosphere as well.  I loved the combination of modern-ness and history.

So, your latest book sounds wonderful to me!

Oh, I've never been to Heidleberg....but I felt the same way about Oxford in England......The ancient buildings crowded up close to modern living...It's just amazing, isn't it?

And I have to say, I'm a cemetery person...in that I love old cemeteries. I could spend hours wandering around, reading the stones and there are some incredible ones in Europe.......

Deja Vu:

For me it was Venice, Italy.  We arrived on a rainy late afternoon, walked about for a few minutes and went

back to our room.  The next morning after breakfast,  we walked out onto the hotel's rooftop garden and I

found myself transfixed.  We stood above the St. Mark's Basin from which the Grand Canal leads.  The rain

clouds were clearing,  the sun's rays were peeking through, and the various watercraft (including gondolas)

were beginning to move about.  My eyes brimmed  with tears and I was filled with such happiness!  My heart

was at peace!

I have been

to S. Africa 4 times and felt at home from the 2nd day (OK, the first day was a bit scary.  We pulled up to the front gate at midnight of the lodge where we were staying and there was a guard with a machine gun.  Kinda freaked me out, but once I saw everything in the daylight, it was 'home').  There are many places there that look to be what I'd imagine Ireland would look like in person.  Ireland is tied for 1st in places I must go before I die.  I have a feeling when I'm there, I'll also be home.  (Australia is the other tied for 1st.  Of course, I want to go EVERYWHERE!!!!!  LOL!)

Growing up, we made many visits to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  However, I feel that due to my Cherokee ancestry, every time I enter the park, it's like I give a sigh of relief.  Again, I'm home.

Hugs,
April

Maureen,

I love cemeteries, too!  In fact, some of my favorite pictures from Ireland are of crosses and grave markers.  (I love castles, too, which was a big draw in Heidelberg as well.)

We have a lovely Victorian-era cemetery here that is just gorgeous.  It's called Cave Hill, and it's on the National Register of Historic Places and is a registered arboretum.  The middle fork of Beargrass Creek flows through it, and it has a lake with swans in it.  There are lots and lots of Civil War graves there, as well as more contemporary ones (like Col. Harlan Sanders, founder of Ketucky Fried Chicken).  It just has a sense of peace about it.  A friend and I used to take a lunch and go sit in the cemetery to eat it.  You can see photos that someone took of Cave Hill here.

Hi Maureen!

I haven't lived there for over 25 years, but my soul always recognizes New Orleans when I go back, which is not too often. I just feel at home there, even though my DH hates the heat & humidity (I'm a hothouse flower)...the food, the smells, my N'Awlins accent resurfaces. And the cemetaries! I'm sure you know about the cemetaries there.

Loving the Kings...keep 'em coming!

hmm..

For me this happens.. not for a city though...But here goes..

Till I was 14, we stayed in our old family home and had to shift ... When searching for a rented accomodation.. I saw so many houses, (along with parents of course)..and I felt uneasy in almost each one of them..until I came to one house on the first floor in an area totally unvisited.. It really felt as if I came home :) We stayed there for about 4-5 yrs and later shifted to an apartment.. Even there, we looked at many before I settled on one (and thankfully my parents agreed with me)..

This kind of deja-vu happens many times for me, especially while shifting... happened when I left home for work, and then moved to current city and selected a place to live..etc !

I think it is a kind of "vibe".. that affects some.. :)

I fell in love with the city when I visited in college.   I felt like I knew the place like the back of my hand & was very comfortable being there for a few days.  I wish it could have been longer & I hope to get a chance to go back some day.
