Last Friday was D.E.A.R. -- Drop Everything and Read -- Day. I don't know if it's just in the USA nor do I know who designated it. The National PTA? A Publisher (when I googled it, a publisher's site was the first one to pop up)? At any rate, at my kids' school, parents were invited in for the first hour to DROP EVERYTHING AND READ.
I forgot to tell everyone here about it before the fact . . . maybe next year we can plan something for the site?

I'm not sure, Sadhbh,
but it was a big deal for the school. They had posters up and there were the hits when I googled it. I'm not sure how they picked the date. It sounds like the whole thing was set up to get kids (and families) reading more. It also sounds like teachers are supposed to have DEAR moments throughout the school year -- looking here. Maybe the DEAR Day is to get the families more involved?
I really don't know anything more about it. I'm with you (and probably everyone else here) in that for me every day is a day to DEAR. :)

DEAR in education
Many school districts have a mandatory DEAR time daily. Time dedicated to this depends on the building level and set-up. Our district currently does RIP (Read In Peace) time daily for 12 minutes at a set time. Every student in our building should be reading silently at this time.
I have never heard of a DEAR or RIP day, but some of us do make it a point to have students doing them daily! You would be shocked by how many kids claim that's the only time they get to read.

We have a TV Turn off week
We have a TV Turn off week at the preschool I work at. It is usually about this time of year. But I haven't heard of D.E.A.R. before.

I hadn't hear of D.E.A.R. before, either
and I imagine most people here don't need it LOL but it's a good idea. I think the turn off the TV thing is national, too.

I haven't heard about the
I haven't heard about the DEAR thing either, but do you think I can convince the hubby that it is for Saturday and he should take the kids to the park.

never heard of DEAR before.
never heard of DEAR before. Wish I had though. I don't get a chance to drop everythign and read near as much as I'd like and I'd have totally taken advantage of the day!

I didnt know about
the special day....but that is just about how i spend most of my days.
I know that on Sunday there was a special kids book faire here in Hollywood, sponsored by THE WONDER OF READING. There were celebrites reading stories to the kids and there were games and music too.

I'll be different
I have heard of DEAR, and when I was teaching we'd have reading time every day. It wasn't silent reading as I taught kindergarten, and they couldn't all read for themselves, but I'd read at least a chapter out of book daily. We usually did it at the end of the day, but I know many districts that do it after lunch...kind of a settling to get ready for the afternoon.
Like many of us I didn't know about the whole day being devoted to the idea, and doubt many adults could or would do it. Also, like many of us I don't need much of an excuse to DEAR regularly!
Oops...almost forgot to say I don't like the idea being called RIP...I understand it, but after living with the men in my life the connotation just does me in, and I think DEAR is much nicer.
