Do SHOES maketh the heroine?

Claiming His Bought Bride (Silhouette Desire) Recently, I received the cover of my first Desire, Claiming His Bought Bride. And I LOVE it. Really, really love it.

The scene is from the book, just after Damon and Lily get married. The fabulous production department at Harlequin have used so many details from the story: from Damon's dark, wavy hair to him carrying Lily through the door to their hotel room.

Lily is tall and has long blonde hair and is carrying a small bouquet of Lily-of-the-Valley, just as the scene is written. She’s also wearing a white cotton summer dress as she is in the book.

But one thing I didn’t describe in the book, and the production department has had to improvise, is Lily’s shoes.

I have a deep, dark secret to admit – I know nothing about shoes. But when I saw the cover, her gorgeous shoes were the first thing I noticed! I have no idea how to describe them (I’m guessing there’s a name for that typeShoe of heel?) but they’re way fabulous.

To be completely honest, I own four pairs of shoes. Two for at home (Birkenstocks and red crocs) and two for going out (runners and my Girl Shoes). It’s not that I have disdain for other types of shoes, it’s that I always forget to look at them on other people and never think to buy another pair for myself. I completely missed the shoe gene (unlike my sister who says, if the shoe fits, buy it in every colour). But it’s time I learned…

So, in the interests of informing me and helping my future heroines become well shod, tell me: what are your favourite shoes? If you could afford any shoes in the world, what would they be like? And tell me about your shoe collection – how many pairs / types / colours do you have?

I—and my heroines—thank you!  And to show the depth of my appreciation, when my author copies of Claiming His Bought Bride arrive, I'll send one out to a random commenter from today's blog. Smile

As long as the shoes fit and my toes don't get squased in them, I'm quite happy.

Can't help you....

After 20+ years of wearing heels to work, I wear runners with orthotics in them every day now.  On those rare occasions when I must wear heels (weddings), I prefer the open heels (even in the wintertime) so my toes aren't squished.  (Must be a recurring theme!)  I wear the same shoes I wore back then but they've been reheeled and polished many times, as I find I don't wear my newer, uncomfortable, shoes.  Besides, our feet flatten as we age, so pumps just don't fit anymore and hurt like h**l.

Guess I'm not a shoe person.  I have my everyday runners.  I have my court shoes for badminton each night (which actually become my everyday runners after a year).  I have a new pair waiting (bought on sale, of course) to become my court shoes.  I have loafers in three colours (blue, brown, and black), as at 5'10" I try not to be any taller.  I have suede shoes in those three colours.  I'm down to one pair of sandals that aren't worn very often now either (due to orthotics and I prefer wearing socks all year round).  And I probably have three pair of "heels" I wear irregularly and a half dozen I should chuck.

Oh yeah.  In answer to your other question, I couldn't care a less about affording certain shoes; I find the more expensive they are, the more uncomfortable and worse for your feet they can be.  I do not take my feet for granted.  A simple blister can lead to amputation if you have diabetes (I don't, but I'm overweight so could get it anytime).

Good luck with your "survey"!  I DO think that the heels compliment everything well on your cover.  I absolutely love Desire covers; they are "clean" - the H/h are prominent, you can see the titles clearly, and you enjoy the people themselves (and background afterward).  In a word?  Your cover is indeed perfect!

I heart shoes!

I heart shoes!  I even wrote a single title series based around a shoe company!:)  That said, I've learned that I can admire without wearing.  I have a few tall heels, but I don't like how unstable I feel on them, so I don't wear them very often. I call them "sitting shoes". Laughing I actually wanted to buy a pair of Manola Blahniks (sp).  They're mentioned all the time on Sex And The City.  My daughter and I went on a "Sex And The City" tour in NYC where they took us to eat cupcakes and then drink cosmopolitans.  Okay, so I should have only drank one cosmo instead of two because the tour ended at Bergdorf Goodman (expensive department store where I never shop! Surprised) and they were having a sale on shoes.  Bought a pretty pair of Manola sandals with a reasonable heel!  Checked that off the list.  Now I'm back to whatever feels good that's on sale.   I admire others who can wear pointed toe shoes, but I absolutely cannot.  My feet don't grow that way.  My most recent acquisition is a pair of black pumps with a little kitten heel and lots of cushion added.  NO BLISTERS!

I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove your cover!  He'd gorgeous!  She's gorgeous!  Just looking at it makes my heart go pitter patter!:)  I can't WAIT for your book to come out!!!!

SECRETS OF THE PLAYBOY'S BRIDE March 2010

I have to say that I'm

I have to say that I'm completely aware that I'm an abnormal girl.  I don't like to shop.  I don't often wear make-up and shoes are just not that important to me.  I'm a tomboy through and through and the only girlie things about me are my inherited addiction to soaps (handed down from grandmother to mother to me), my love for precious gems, and romance novels.  Other than that, I'm a hang out with the guys kind of girl.

What does that mean?  My favorite shoes are my running shoes.  They are a beautiful lightweight pair of Nikes that makes me feel fabulous everytime I put them on.  I always buy Nikes and I always buy red accents on my shoes.  Red is a color gift from the gods. No pair of shoes makes me feel stronger, more powerful and successful than my Nikes after I complete my daily run or when I run a road race.

On the odd day though, I will get a wild hair and put on some girlie shoes for the office.  I like to keep them guessing around that place so it gives me perverse pleasure to show up in a dress or heels everyone in while because I know they expect my normal pantsuits, slacks and funky sweaters that I favor day in and day out.  There are rules though.  I never, never, never wear open-toed shoes.  I don't know what it is but I just don't like them.  Not sandals.  Not flip-flops.  Not peek-a-boo toes.  Nothing.  My idea of killer heels are at least three inches of narrow heel with a closed toe and something strappy around the ankle.  I love straps and I have no explanation for that part either.  Should I add that to my girlie attributes?  Are straps girlie?

I have to say though, I love your cover and I'm adding to my "to buy" list of books.  And the shoes?  Yeah, those are pretty awesome.  Even a tomboy like me has to admit that!  Cool

Shoes

I don't wear heels of any kind any more.  In fact I never really wore them except to church or wedding or other really special occasion and now I can't due to the fact that I have one leg shorter than the other and have to have a lift on the left shoe.  So I have one pair of Reboks walking shoes and a pair of flat shoes for special occasions.  Besides trying to find a pair of heels for my short feet wasn't easy.

December 2008 MEMBER of the MONTH!

A true teacher is a person who, at the end of the school day, still likes children!

The heels on the cover are called - kitten heels.

I am a shoe person who has probably 35 pairs of shoes.  My favorites are sling back pumps - closed toes with a strap around the heel so they stay on.  This summer I did invest in a pair of good sandals for weekend wear and one good pair of shoes to wear to work that I can walk in.  They are well worth the money and will be worn next summer also.  The have arch supports and my feet do not hurt when I wear them.  Since I can get at least two years wear from them I did not mind the investment.

Most of the shoes I buy are on sale so I do not mind paying for them.  I bought some this weekend that normally are 65.00 and got them for under 12.00 so that is always a good buy.

Elaine

Shoes.....

I LOVE shoes!  LOVE THEM!  From flip-flops (thongs in some places, but that always makes me think of undies...  LOL!) to tennis shoes (which is what I am normally found in because of work--a couple of months ago I got the best pair from Addias.  This is a link that's pretty close to mine, but mine have silver where these have red: http://www.shopadidas.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3458100&shopGroup=R&cp=2019628.2039726.3080822&colorId ), from closed toe flats to peep toe heels, I lurves 'em all.  I recently bought a couple of pairs of the peep toe heels for my cruise.  Red patent leather and black leather ones from Jessica Simpson.  Gorgeous, and I can't wait to wear them.  http://www.overstock.com/Clothing-Shoes/Jessica-Simpson-Josette-Leather-Peep-Toe-Pumps/3434659/product.html?cid=123620&fp=F&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=11512303-000-005

Being 5'1'', when I dress up, I do like to wear some amount of heel, even if it's a kitten heel like the ones in the cover.  Love the cover, too, btw!

November 2009 MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Oh, wow... shoes

Oh wow... shoes. I ABSOLUTELY love shoes. I am always buying shoes... I tend to buy cheap shoes for every day use (running after my son or running errands). I like them comfty and nice. If I find a model that fits the profile, I buy them in several colors. And if they get wet (it rains so much here) or ruined it won't hurt because they were dirt cheap to begin with. It just means I get to buy more.

THEN there are the shoes I buy to go out... I easily have 30 pairs of shoes at home right now... and many others that are still in my closet at my parent's house. I even go there sometimes and change shoes. I am not that short, but I love stilettos... there are no more femenine shoes than those. I used to wear them daily, the higher the heel, the better. I toned it down when I got pregnant and all, but as soon as I get a chance I put my beautiful shoes on.

I don't do crocs, my son and fiancée have them in several colors... but I can't for some reason. I actually found out that the crocs manufacturer makes other shoes for women so I might end up getting one of those. My flat shoes are usually ballerina style, I currently own a pair that is rapidly becoming my favorite (so cute and comfortable). It is black saten, with a little bow detail in the front.

I also have a lot of sandals (w/straps, ankle wrap, slide in) with different heels (wedge, mid-heel, stilettos)... the weather here allows you to wear sandals all year round. For closed toes shoes I prefer to compromise: peep-toe. Oh, slingback shoes are also great. I prefer pointy over round toes. I have a pair in blue that are impossibly high, and I find myself buying clothes that will match these shoes often.

Oh, of course some ladies footwear tip... To make legs look thinner and longer...

  • Women should use pointy toes footwear
  • Heels make the legs appear thinner
  • Open toe will give calves and thighs a slimmer appearance as compared to a closed-toe shoe
  • Match the footwear to tights or hose.

XOXO

Ah, shoes

You know, when my hubby asked my dad for my hand in marriage, Dad's only comment was "Do you really think you can keep her in shoes?"

Ahahahahahahahaaaa, ah those were the days...if I couldn't decide between two pairs when I was shoe shopping I'd just buy both. So much easier than making a decision. I think my youngest has inherited my shoe-love gene.

Hi Rachel.

Fabo cover!  I love it.  I'm not a shoe person necessarily, but I enjoy looking at them on other women's feet!  I wish I did love shoes, but I go barefoot most of the day and when it's warm enough, I'm in sandals or flip flops.  Shoes KILL my feet and the other day when I was at a wedding, I took my expensive shoes OFF, as soon as I slipped my feet under the table. I danced barefoot too.  I envy women who are comfortable in tall heels and who wear them well!! Still and all, shoes are Sexy!!

re: shoes

Rachel, I completely missed the shoe gene too. I can never find shoes in my right size, or if they fit they pinch the toes or rub the heels. There was only one time I found a pair of shoes that when I slipped them on I felt like I'd been born in them. Smile They were soft leather lace-ups and I wore them out, then got the sole replaced, then they finally wore out again. Unfortunately when I went back to buy another pair I discovered they didn't make that line anymore. The shoe assistant found me a pair at another store but they never felt quite the same as the original pair. Still, at least I now know why people say that shoes can be comfortable. Smile

Love your cover!

Shoes!

Rachel, firstly, congratulations on that lovely lovely cover! I can't wait to read CLAIMING HIS BOUGHT BRIDE!

And yes, those shoes pictured are as lovely as the heroine! I admit I'm a bit of a shoe nut. I love looking at shoes and touching shoes and even though I sometimes can't control myself and buy lots and lots of shoes, I sometimes don't wear any of them. From all the shoes I have, the ones I always seem to pull out are my UGG boots! Still . . . there's something about a delicate shoe and a delicate heel that makes me lose it (in a good way)! Smile

Favorite shoes......

My favorite shoes are any that I can slip into - flip flops, clogs, slides.  I'm all for comfort.  I used to wear heels for work & my feet suffered.  So, when I changed to a more casual job, I revelled in the fact that I could finally wear comfortable shoes to work!

I really don't know how many pairs of shoes I have - probably more that 25 pairs.  I don't have the space to have a huge collection of shoes.  I have several pairs of Birkenstocks (clogs & sandals) in several colors (navy, black, cream, burgundy).  I have one pair of good tennis shoes that are my go to shoes for work.  Then, I have a small assortment of heels for that occasional dress-up affair (black, navy).  And then, there's my flip flops - many colors, many styles.  Smile

Shoe Research followed by HANDBAG research...

Hello Rachel-with-the-gorgeous-cover

Being vertically challenged, I love a shoe that gives me a bit of height. Unfortunately, teeny people also tend to have teeny feet so I've been known to resort to the children's section and there ain't a lota heels to be found there.... Oh, for filly-like limbs and six inch heels.

You know, the only thng that equals my love of shoes is my love of handbags, but you don't see a lot of handbags on covers these days....Cool

Shoes

I like nice shoes, but have no idea about the differences between different shoes - as a general rule, if I can afford it, it is comfortable and I like what it looks like then I'll wear it. I had the misfortune of messing up one of my ankles just prior to my teens so I've never truly gotten a chance to wear heels regularly.

There are so many great covers coming through at the moment. I can't help it my list of books to buy just keeps growing.

The shoe gene

Well I must say the shoe gene skipped a generation and went to my youngest daughter. My mother (who is now 88) had every conceivable color and syle of high heels when I was growing up. I bet she had a least 50 or 60 pairs. When they would go out of style I would tell her she needed to get rid of them, but she would say eventually the style will come back and I will be able to get more use out of them. Well, skip me and go to my youngest. She is a shoe-aholic. I can't tell you how many pairs she has in her closet. Flats, heels, boots, athletic and every color of flip flop they make. The funny thing is, her 4 year old daughter is the same way. She probably has 15 pairs of shoes right now she can wear. She loves shoes and purses. I  just can't get excited about shoes.

Linda Henderson

really wore them except to church or wedding or other really special

That would make it really hard to find shoes. One of my feet is different to the other after some surgery so it's hard for me to get shoes that work too. But, like you, I didn't have the shoe-love before that happened.

So I have one pair of Reboks walking shoes and a pair of flat
shoes for special occasions.

That sounds like my shoe collection! Cool

If crocs didn't slide as

If crocs didn't slide as much on wet pavement I would wear them all the time. I love to look at shoes--there are some gorgeous, sexy ones and there are an awful lot of butt ugly, clunky, chunky shoes out there. But my feet hate them all--except crocs. I can find a few other flats that have good arch supports that work for my poor old, sore feet, but crocs have some spring under my sore feet.

Do I care about shoes and shoe descriptions in a book? Only as it might pertain to the developing relationship between the hero and heroine. Otherwise a description of shoes is just filler.

Slingbacks and ballerinas... I will look forward to your heroine's shoes.

You know, I do pay attention to that. Shoes can be extremely sexy... We often read about the hero's ultra-expensive Italian handmade shoes... why can't we read about the heroine's shoes as well???? I have read some sex scenes (Blaze, of course) where they make hot, steamy love with her wearing nothing but shoes... it keeps things sizzly and different. But my favorite is when the hero is amazed that our heroine can walk so well in those high heels (real men DO notice our shoes and feet!!!!)... and then we hear her perspective, that she is really shaky in them.

I have several pairs of Birkenstocks (clogs & sandals) in several
colors (navy, black, cream, burgundy).  I have one pair of good tennis
shoes that are my go to shoes for work.  Then, I have a small
assortment of heels for that occasional dress-up affair (black, navy).
And then, there's my flip flops - many colors, many styles.  Smile

That sounds like a really well balanced shoe collection, Cheryl - a couple of everything!

My favorite shoes are any that I can slip into - flip flops, clogs,
slides.  I'm all for comfort.  I used to wear heels for work & my
feet suffered.  So, when I changed to a more casual job, I revelled in
the fact that I could finally wear comfortable shoes to work!

Actually, that's an advantage of being a writer too - I work from home and can be barefoot / casual. Glad you found a job that suits your footwear preferences!

The Cover looks awesome

I personally am not a shoe person either. If I can wear my dress boots or my tennis shoes. I am good to go. I just always try to make sure my outfit matches one of the other. If I need dressy heel type shoes I call my cousin Tracy and make her pick out a pair for me. Between Shoes and Purses I don't see how she has ne money.

I just go get something out of her closet when I need it. So she buys all that I buy books. works out perfectly for me. She don't read though so she might not agree..

Being vertically challenged, I love a shoe that gives me a bit of
height. Unfortunately, teeny people also tend to have teeny feet so
I've been known to resort to the children's section and there ain't a
lota heels to be found there.... Oh, for filly-like limbs and six inch
heels.

Lol! But it seems you're not the only blog reader shopping in the kid's shoe section. Though, come to think of it, the other kid's-shoe-purchaser was a fellow kiwi, Sandra. There might be something in that...

You know, the only thng that equals my love of shoes is my love of
handbags, but you don't see a lot of handbags on covers these days....Cool

You're right! I haven't noticed many handbags. Of course, I know about as much about handbags as I do about shoes, so that would open another whole topic up.  Embarassed

I like nice shoes, but have no idea about the differences between
different shoes - as a general rule, if I can afford it, it is
comfortable and I like what it looks like then I'll wear it.

That's such a sensible approach, Lyn. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who has no idea about the differences between shoes! (Though, I have to admit, I've learned a whole lot today and can now name some styles. Cool)

I had the misfortune of messing up one of my ankles just prior to my
teens so I've never truly gotten a chance to wear heels regularly.

Another one of us with a foot / ankle problem. Ellen with the height difference, you with your ankle and me. We should band together. Wink

There are so many great covers coming through at the moment. I can't help it my list of books to buy just keeps growing.

I know! I'm the same with the huge list of books to buy, and then the huge pile of books to read!

Well I must say the shoe gene skipped a generation and went to my
youngest daughter. My mother (who is now 88) had every conceivable
color and syle of high heels when I was growing up. I bet she had a
least 50 or 60 pairs.

Isn't that interesting! The nature / nurture debate: some would say it's about how you're brought up, and whether you've been exposed to the love of shoes, etc. But you were certainly exposed and didn't get it. And your daughter was brought up by you and she got it. It's something more, isn't it?

The funny thing is, her 4 year old daughter is the same way. She probably has 15 pairs of shoes right now she can wear.

I have a 4 year old niece who is exactly the same. She's looked at people's shoes since before she could talk, and now it's hard to drag her past a shoe shop in a shopping mall - she loves them!

Shoes

Soory Rachel, I'm shoes-hopeless too. The closest I got was in my early twenties where i owned 6 different pairs of 'cool' sneakers. I wore lovely cream heels on my wedding day but as soon as I hit the reception i changed to sneakers - the were my very best electric blue suede ones... all hidden by the dress anyway!

Lovely cover, and her shoes look great!

If crocs didn't slide as much on wet pavement I would wear them all the time. I love to look at shoes--there are some gorgeous, sexy ones and there
are an awful lot of butt ugly, clunky, chunky shoes out there. But my
feet hate them all--except crocs. I can find a few other flats that
have good arch supports that work for my poor old, sore feet, but crocs
have some spring under my sore feet.

I was a slow convert to crocs. Dh had a pair and loved them for ages before I tried them myself. And, yep, it's the spring aspect that's my favourite.

Do I care about shoes and shoe descriptions in a book? Only as it might
pertain to the developing relationship between the hero and heroine.
Otherwise a description of shoes is just filler.

Interesting perspective - thanks for the insight!

wiccachick & why kitten?

Ha!  I have you fooled with my girlie side because we're on the
Harlequin site.  If you ever get on ESPN site with me and my smack talk
you'd never question my tomboyishness (can that be a word?).

Lol on your girly side being more prominent here!

Vanilla is my favorite scent on soaps but there's a local store here
where I live that has a Christmas spice scent that rocks my socks.
It's vanilla but also cinnamon and pumpkin spice.  Oh yeah.  I set my
calendar to the days when they'll sell me new bucket loads of that
stuff.

That sounds gorgeous! And so cool that they don't sell it year-round, so it keeps it special.

And could someone please explain to me why they call it a kitten
heel?  I checked my cats and there's nothing on them that looks like
that heel.  I can't figure it out.  *giggle

You raise a very important point here, wiccachick. Perhaps kitten is for being a baby instead of a cat, and it's a smaller heel? Or maybe a reference to a sex-kitten? Of course, I'm the exact wrong person to shed insight onto a shoe issue, perhaps someone else here knows?

been shoe designer... but I guess shopping for shoes is a big part of
the fun.

Have you seen PS I Love You? When the heroine's husband dies and she has a bit of a breakdown, she retrains herself to become a shoe designer. So there's still hope for you! But yeah, it'd take out all the fun of shopping.  Wink

Slingbacks and ballerinas... I will look forward to your heroine's shoes. You know, I do pay attention to that. Shoes can be extremely sexy... We

Very good point. I'll be endeavouring to have more of the details I've learned today in future books. (Though, I've never had my heroes in anything as specific as Italian handmade shoes, so it's not a gender thing, it's a shoe thing.Smile)

I have read some sex scenes (Blaze, of course) where they make hot,
steamy love with her wearing nothing but shoes... it keeps things
sizzly and different.

Interesting that you say it was "Blaze, of course". In my second book, The Blackmailed Bride's Secret Child, there's a love scene where the hero asks the heroine to leave her heels on. Hmm... perhaps that was a bit too racy...?

Or am I paranoid? Are you cruising somewhere nice and flat?

No, you're not paranoid.  I only wear them long enough to get me to dinner and back.  Other than that, I'm usually in flip flops or sandals.

Today I bought some platinum peep toe heels and some white flats.  The flats are for my costume...  My flight leaves in just over 13 hours!!!!!

You know, I'm definitely seeing a huge variety in people's relationship to shoes on this blog. From the self-confessed shoe nuts to the shoe-hopeless readers, and everything else in between. We certainly cover the full spectrum here at the Desire blog!

I wore lovely cream heels on my wedding day but as soon as I hit the

Bec, that is *smart*! And I love the idea you had electric blue shoes on under a wedding gown.  Laughing

Shoes.

I love shoes. So much. My feet don't love them as much. I'm more of a cute pair of flats girl, but I will drool at gorgeous heels while window shopping. If I do have to wear heels, I like to find ones with more of a wedge heel, much more comfortable and easier to walk in. On the odd occasion, I have worn stilettos, but my feet still haven't forgiven me for that one. I'm a suck for them though, and I definitely love when authors describe them. I was reading a Susan Elizabeth Phillips book last night and she described what sounded like the cutest pair of heels ever, I wanted a pair. I just like being able to imagine the shoes in my head, especially in this particular book "Natural Born Charmer" the heroine kept commenting on the hero's 'gay' cowboy boots Tongue out

Ah. See, this is something I don't think I always understood - that dichotomy.

I love Susan Elizabeth Phillips! And I do remember outfits her heroines and heroes have worn, so she must be good at that aspect since I often skim.
