Today eHarlequin is welcoming old friends and new with their annual Open House (don’t forget the Special Edition Authors Chat tonight at 7:00 pm EST) This reminds me of a good friend I have known since high school who has done the same thing for years over the holidays. She would open her home for food, drink, and good times to anyone who wanted to stop by. Friends, co-workers, and even strangers off the street have been known to pop in and stay for a few minutes to share holiday cheer or stay for the entire evening.
And while this friend and I only live an hour apart, we often let life get in the way of us spending time together. But this year, she is going through a tough time so instead of doing an Open House I am taking her out for dinner this weekend. No husbands, no kids…just two old friends who never have a problem picking up right where we left off even if its been weeks or months since we’ve been together
And my weekend plans got me thinking about who else I’d like to share a few hours with over a glass of wine and a good meal. If I could pick three people—alive or dead, famous or not, fictional or real—who would I pick and why?
1) My father --- it’s been eight years since he’s been gone, back when my dreams of writing were still in my head and I hadn’t even started my first manuscript. I would so love to share all that has happened over the last couple of years with him.
2) Michael J. Fox --- I’ve been a big fan of his since his Alex P. Keaton days on “Family Ties” and have followed his career through the years. When he announced his diagnosis with Parkinson's disease I became even more impressed in his unending commitment to finding a cure with his foundation and to his life as a husband and father.
3) Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy – yes, that Mr. Darcy from Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice. What can Isay, I love the strong, silent type of hero. And I’d like to meet him before he meets Elizabeth Bennet and if he looks like Colin Firth I’d be very happy!
How about you all? Anyone you would like to share dinner with? Share with us!

A Dinner with ...
If I could have dinner with anyone it would be with my mother and mother-in-law. They were both very special ladies. My mom has been gone for 9 years now and I still miss her very much. Both mothers were very influential in helping to unite their children. They were the dominant person in our lives. Encouraging, supporting and especially loving us so much.
May each and all have a wonderful holiday season.
Nothing more relaxing than a good book and a cup of tea.
I would choose my maternal
I would choose my maternal and paternal grandmothers. One at a time since I would want to have them all to myself for the evening.

A huge table needed
Christyne--I've always said if I had three wishes granted to me, one of them would be my wish to meet every woman I'm descended from. I know there would be language issues along the way, but magic would take care of that
. Just think of the history lessons--and the ultimate answer of how we humans came to be

Beautiful Post, Christyne!
Hope to see everyone at the open house tonight!
I would have dinner with my mom, who is having open heart surgery in two days. She's in her eighties and frail now. And I'm halfway across the country, praying for her returned health missing her so...

Great idea
What a lovely post and a great idea, Christyne.
i think we're all thinking very much on the same track here because I would have to put my own mother at the top of my list. She knew that I had had my first book accepted, but sadly died before she could hold one of my published books in her hands. So she would have to be toop of the list and then I could show her all the books that have followed on from that first one.
I would also love to meet up again with a Mills & Boon author called Marguerite Lees who was the first person ever to encourage me to write and say that I had any talent - plus she was a friend of my mother so they could catch up!
And finally my father and DH's father both of whom died even before we married . I know DH would love to have met my father and I think his Dad and mine would have got on really well.
Christine - I hope your mother comes through the surgery fine and her health improves wonderfully
Happy Christmas everyone

Dinner
I would love to have dinner with my parents and oldest brother. My dad died when I was nineteen and so much has happened in my life since then. My brother died three years ago and my mother last year. I'd also like for my grandparents to be there. My paternal grandmother died when my father was three, so I know he would enjoy her being there, too. And his sister, my favorite aunt. The more I write, the more people I think to add. I'm getting a little misty here.
I'd also like to have time with old friends who are no longer in my life, like the people I went to grammar school with. Maybe a few of my favorite teachers. So many people who have meant so much, but who have passed out of my life for one reason or another.
I'll be praying for your mother, Christine.
Kathleen

Thanks, guys!

Tough Choice
I think the top of my list would be my maternal grandpa-I remember him as a cheerful story teller, avid Montreal Canadians fan surrounded by Toronto Maple Leaf Fans (hockey) and non serious bridge player. I think he would be honest and open about everything I wanted to talk about. Plus after he came to Canada from England he wrote my granny to be a letter on birch bark telling her he was saving his money to send to her so that she could come join him. My Dearest Fanny is how it starts--how cool is that.
Christine you and your mom will be in my thoughts and prayers. Hope everything turns out well for her..

When I get a little money I buy books, and then if any is left I buy food and clothes..-- Erasmus
I think...
...I would choose my MIL and BIL because they were both dead when I met my husband and because they both influenced him so. I would love the opportunity to get to talk with them, to thank them for helping to shape him into the wonderful man he is, and to let them know how much I love and appreciate him.
Also, my MIL was adopted as a young girl. All she could remember of her previous life and family is a woman in a red dress (presumably her mother) holding her, crying, and speaking in French, which my MIL spoke as a little girl. She was adopted by parents in the Cincinnati area and grew up wondering about her biological family. Eventually, she traced her father down to a professional or semi-professional golfer, I think. So, I'd like to talk with her about that, too.
Christine, I hope everything goes well for your mother in her surgery. I will be sending positive thoughts your way and keeping her in my prayers.

Kaelee, so romantic. And JV, your story of your adopted MIL gave me a shiver. What a great book that would make!
Thank you both for your prayers and good wishes. Now it’s just a waiting game for the next couple of days…

Christyne and Christine...
Christyne, I'd invite my mother--if I could. She's been gone for a long while now, but I still miss her very much at big family events like Christmas.
Chris, prayers to you and your family for your mom's full and speedy recovery.

What a great post
Christyne this is such a great post.
Let me see if I could sit down with anyone. And for me it would change by the day.
My father-who unfortunately after only meeting him five years ago, can no longer speak due to complications from a stroke he had earlier this year, but also is suffering from terminal prostate cancer.
Jon Bon Jovi - I woudn't ask him about the typical things he'd be expecting like about his music career and stardom, i'd ask him about his charitable work, and an acting career that was once flourishing.
Josh Brolin - I'd talk to him about his choice of movies of late which have been fantastic (No country for old me, W, Milk) and what does he look for in material. (if he need a story written-i'm available! j/k)
For today that's who my picks were: yesterday it would have been President Bush, Two days before probably our new president-elect.
Great post! Thanks for that.
Thanks for all the great replies!
Due to the ice storm that hit my town Thursday night I was without power for 36 hours --- yikes!! And then there was alot of clean up for the rest of the weekend!
Christine...hope your mom is doing well...she and your family are in my prayers.
