Hmm, a day in the life of your favourite character. If you had the chance, who would it be?
I was watching last week's episode of Desperate Housewives tonight while catching up on a bit of ironing and it occurred to me that I wouldn't mind a day in the life of someone else, for a change. But which character? Sure, if I was Bree then the ironing would be perfect, and it wouldn't bother me a bit to be doing it because deep down Bree is an old fashioned home queen and takes joy in getting things 'just so.' Susan appears to wear anything stretch knit and non-ironable so maybe I'd like to be her. But ten minutes watching the show and there's no way I could do it--to be honest, she drives me around the bend. Katherine? Nope. Edie? On a good day when her life is going brilliantly and the others aren't sniping at her, maybe. I'd certainly love to have her figure for a day, well, okay, maybe longer! Lynette--well, if I came home to a clean tidy house at the end of a work day, (which, I don't know if you've noticed, despite four kids hers is still always tidy, and I mean ALWAYS!) yeah, sure. Gabrielle? Hmm, now she's her old self again (remembering that here in NZ we're behind what you're seeing in the US) and Carlos is President of the company he works for, yeah, maybe her too.
But overall, no, I don't think a day in the life of any of them would do it for me. So that brings me to movies. I adore Sweet Home Alabama. Would I be Melanie for a day? You bet. Even when her life was heading into the toilet bowl with being married to one man and being engaged to be married to another, she still had the drive and, well, the heart I think any romance heroine should have. Sure, she's made mistakes, some of them pretty bad ones, but her heart leads her, eventually, to the right decisions in the end.
As far as heroines in books goes, man, I'm hard pressed to choose. Who wouldn't want to be Desire heroine for a day (or even longer given the heroes!) Mind you, most of them have a really rough road before their life begins to smell like roses. I know I'm pretty darn mean to my heroines before they get the beautiful life they deserve. Maybe, if I could just pick a day, a specific day, then I would choose to be a specific character, but wait... I get to do that every day I write, so why would I want anyone else's day but my own?
What do you all think? If you had the choice, and the chance to spend a day in the life of your favourite character, who would it be, what day would it be and why?
To one randomly drawn winner, I'll gift a signed book from my back list together with a New Zealand chocolate treat.

I'm first!!!!
Hi Yvonne!
I think I would choose Meryl Streep's character in Out of Africa. Yeah, she had a pretty tough life, but I love that pioneering spirit! I often think I was born way too late. For a woman of her times, having failed to marry, to have the guts to proposition a man to marry her and travel to Africa, and then forge a great life, even with her cheating husband...to build what she built and have the love of Robert Redford...of course, I'm scared of spiders and snakes (and syphillis!!) and most especially wild lions, but in my head, I would love to have achieved what she did, even though there were major downs as well as ups.
Great topic!

I'd like to be Lizzie Bennet
I'd like to be Lizzie Bennet - just for one day, perhaps a day after "The End' in the book, just to see what life was really like back then - for the priviliged, then someone else would be doing my ironing! and I'd have Mr Darcy aka Collin Firth to 'chat' to of an evening.

I cannot begin to imagine wanting to change places with a character in a book or movie. I guess I cannot suspend disbelief enough to make them 'real'. Real like, yes, but not real.

Wow, if I could be anyone?
Wow, if I could be anyone? I would probably switch lives with Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City for just a day. Just to know what it was like to have all those labels in my closet and be able to go out in New York with my girlfriends and have a good time. I think that would be so much fun! Plus, I've always wondered what it would be like to be petite, haha. That doesn't mean I don't love my own life, but sometimes it would be nice to live in a fantasy for a while. To be a desire heroine? You bet! Have a handsome rich CEO fall in love with my charm and even my faults? Who wouldn't want that in a fantasy life? But in real life, I'll take my sweet, gorgeous not rich computer nerd anyday.
Maybe
I might be willing to change for a day in the life of a Desire heroine if I could chose the day she gets her HEA with the hero. I certainly don't want the days leading up to that day.

So intriguing!
Oh, wow. I know as soon as I post this I'll think of a slew of others, but...
It's gotta be Eve Dallas, AFTER solving her case so that Roarke and I (er...Eve) could fly off somewhere fabulous to celebrate.
I wouldn't mind being Lizzie Bennett (Darcy), but I'd have to go with Olivier over Firth (notice the photo I posted for my blog winners, lol). I like her intelligence and his passion.
Other than that, I'd want to live in the Star Trek world. I'd just have to think a bit on which version and character... But I don't think one day would be enough. Decisions, decisions.

Oh, I'd love to be Nicole Kidman in the film Australia for simply shallow reasons. Hugh Jackman wearing a cowboy hat and riding a horse ? Got to be the best visual I can think of at the moment.
Then there's the gutsy, sometimes villainness, always feisty Kate on Lost. She's a very flawed and intriguing character and she gets to choose between Sawyer (Josh Hollaway) and Jack (Matthew Fox) almost on a daily basis. Not too shabby, but I don't think I could do without indoor plumbing, even for a day on that Island!!

Eve Dallas, that would be awesome (though I'd pay a bit more attention to all the baubles Roarke is constantly giving her!)--But I'm with Day. AFTER the case. yeesh.
Or, Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story...after all, she ended up with Cary Grant! I'm just sayin....

Out of Africa
Jan! Always the wanderlust with you, huh? Yes, I can definitely see the allure of Africa and Meryl Streep's character for you. And yes, there do seem to need to be major downs before we get our ups in life, don't there? Years ago, when I was struggling to be published, I was reminded of the phrase 'it's always darkest before the dawn,' and remember constantly sending out a silent question to the universe, 'just how dark does it have to get?'

Sex and the City
Sarramaria! Oh yes, Carrie Bradshaw--the shoes! the petite figure. As someone who stands five feet eleven inches tall and who is not slender (ahem!) I think it would be huge fun to spend a day in the life of someone so diametrically opposed to me in height and build. And the shoes! Did I mention the shoes?

split Lizzie
Day, could you imagine you and Sandra sharing Lizzie Bennet for a day? LOL! Now, clearly I'm going to have to start reading these Eve and Roarke books. Far too many people are wanting to be Eve for it not to whet my curiosity.
Intriguing about Star Trek. I hadn't considered any of the sci-fi fantasy kinds of books or movies I've enjoyed. Now you've got me thinking...

gotta love a cowboy!
Charlene, I would say ANY of Hugh Jackman's leading ladies would be a good bet, wouldn't you? Mind you, to be Nicole Kidman might not be so bad either. I have to admit I haven't seen Australia yet. By the time I get around to making time to go to the movies the film I want to see has always been taken off and then I have to wait months for it on DVD!
And Kate, on Lost, yes, I agree. Totally flawed character but with that edge of redemption that makes you want to be her (with her man candy choices, of course.)

Cady's luck
Oh Cady, I thought that was me speaking for a minute there, but hey, there's a silver lining! You get to CHOOSE which day you want, so I'm sure (if you can wrestle Roarke from Day and Minna) that you could pick a very good day with him.

Classic heroine
Maureen, ::sigh:: yet another Eve? LOL! Seriously, though, Katherine Hepburn -- YES! All her characters had such style, didn't they? And tenacity. I think tenacity is one of those character traits that strongly appeals to me too. And Samantha in Stargate--definitely! Clearly you like strong female characters very much in charge of their own destiny, hmm?

Robbie! That scene at the end of that movie is just so absolutely brilliant, isn't it? I just love it. The whole "sweep you away from all this." My hubby and I (still just b/f and g/f at that stage) went to see the movie with his brother and fiancee (now wife) and I can still hear her sniffling all the way to the carpark at the end, saying "It was just so lovely!"

Great question, Yvonne...
...and I'm loving all the answers. For me...hmm. Choices, choices, running through my brain. But you know, the heroines whose lives I'd love most to inhabit are the ones I write. I guess because I write them according to my own fantasies.
The house I'd love to live in? Check. Fun job. Check. Man who presses all the right buttons. Check. Family problems, inner conflicts all sorted for a HEA. Check. No money worries, no health issues, a beautiful healthy baby. Check.
Today, I'm off to Paris and staying at the most fabulous hotel. This morning, the Musee d'Orsay and then a spot of shopping before drinks and dinner somewhere divine.

MAGNATE'S MAKE-BELIEVE MISTRESS: Desire July 09
Hi Yvonne!
Whenever I try to think of someone's life to step into, I can't help but imagine all the downsides as well. My old boss used to say "If we all hung our washing on a line and compared them, we'd each want to take back our own." That really rings true with me! I'd be nervous about all the needlework and maid management involved in being Lizzie Bennett (and most other historical heroines). Telling servants what to do all day would be far worse than just doing it myself. And just imagine all the backbiting gossip Cinderella must have had to put up with after her whirlwind wedding!!
I guess I'll just be me. I don't iron anything except Brownie badges and sometimes they even stick. Though I wouldn't mind being me *after* I've finished packing and moving to England. (But wait, then I'd miss the last few days with my friends....)

Dr Quinn
I'd be Dr Quinn, Medicine woman. She was a woman ahead of her time.
Great topic!
Heroine I'd like to be for a day from a movie? I have several! They are: Evie Carnahan O'Connell in THE MUMMY movies. Married to a yummy Rick (Brendan Fraser)! Kat Ellis from THE WEDDING DATE, falling for Nick (Dermot Mulroney). Danielle De Barbarac in EVER AFTER once she marries Henry, the Crown Prince of France (Dougray Scott). And finally Lalita Bakshi in BRIDE AND PREJUDICE (a Bollywood-style film) when she's in California and Will Darcy (Martin Henderson) is wooing her. Lalita is the 2nd of 4 girls (like me), who is too independent for most guys in her town (me), and who's father has taught her to be nothing less than what or who she is (me again). Also, it's a musical (most Bollywood films have musical sequences), and music is a huge part of me!
As for books, I've read many where I would like to switch places with the heroine for a day (or more), so I'm not even going to start on this!
I was clueless on the Eve and Roark books, so I looked them up. After what I read on Wikipedia, I wouldn't want to be Eve! Of course, if I'd read the books I might change my mind. This is what I read, Yvonne. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eve_Dallas

Lizzie Bennet might be lots of fun. And I love the idea of being Nicole Kidman in Australia (but not on the day they're lost in the Never Never <g>). Maybe Catherine Zeta Jones in Zorro? Or in No Reservations ('cause she'd get great food in addition to the hunk. <g>)
I know I'm missing someone obvious though. What a fun question!

Yvonne,
That's how I first saw the movie. I loved every minute of it. My dh thought it was a chick flick and wouldn't see it with me, so I rented it when it came out. I highly recommend it - great visuals of the countryside and character depth of H/H. I'm such a Hugh fan, I'd take him in any role. Wolverine was great too.

Swapping lives...
At first I was thinking, like Sandra, that I'd like to be Lizzie after she marries Darcy. And then, like Robyn, I could be happy being Buffy with all the adventure and Spike. But I think it has to be a heroine from a Jenny Crusie novel, just because they have so much fun! I like my own life, so if I was going to swap, then it'd have to be for a comedy.

Emily, she gets the best roles, doesn't she? I watched The Terminal last night, and really enjoyed it.
