Every Secret Thing - Laura Lippman

Laura Lippman - Every Secret Thing - 2003 - William Morrow publishing

Two 11 year olds, banished from a birthday party, take a wrong turn onto an unfamiliar Baltimore streeet and find an abandoned stroller with a baby inside it... They only want to be helpful, to be good...

This is the story of Alice Manning and Ronnie Fuller who, seven years ago, walked away with a seemingly abandoned stroller in an upscale neighborhood not far from their own homes. The two girls are charged with manslaughter, but not tryed as adults when the biracial baby- Olivia Barnes is found in a shack in the woods four days later.

Now they are 18 and realeased into the real world again with the advice to stay way from each other and the Barnes family. But, not long after the girls return home, a biracial toddler turns up missing inside the county's mall. Is it a coincidence? All eyes are on Alice and Ronnie and it is only a matter of time before the secret life of one of the girls is let out into the open.

This novel was one of the deepest, thought provoking and suspensful novels I have read in a while. Lippman's writing style is full of emotion and thourough. It was not fast paced- but this kind of drama isn't meant to be. She took her time and lured you into the lives of the characters. I would like to read from her again soon.
