An Excellent Wife? by Charlotte Lamb (HP 1949)

Back Cover:

Wanted: a wife of convenience

James had never been in love. He intended to marry a woman who didn't make demands, or who would change his life.... So why did he find Patience Kirby so attractive?

She certainly wasn't his idea of marriage material! For one thing, she was a sparky redhead, while he'd always preferred cool blondes. For another, he was used to a peaceful, elegant life-style, and Patience's home was full of kids, old people and animals; noise, warmth and caring....

But in order to have her in his bed, did James have to make Patience his wife?

Man Talk: There are two sides to every story - now it's his turn!

My Review:

She's a 23 yr old woman running an old-folks home, raising her younger brothers and sisters (because the parents died).  The hero's estranged mother lives at her old-folks home, and she meets the hero because she thinks he should be visiting his mom.  The hero thought his mom was dead, as his father told him, so that's a surprise to him!  He quickly becomes enchanted by the innocent and family-loving Patience Kirby.  He recognizes he's falling in love (smart man).

This book is told in the perspective of the hero.  It's funny, tender, and a bit of a wild-chaotic-romp through the family lives of the hero/heroine.  I wouldn't describe it as sensual, but the book does capture the hero's intense feelings for the heroine (particularly his confusion, obsession, and sudden urge to marry and settle down with the heroine).  The one thing that wasn't to my personal taste was that the hero seemed a little weak, not quite your alpha male!  He blushed, he yelled at people who didn't deserve it, and he was rough/careless with the heroine when he first meets her.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars, not quite my cup of tea: I like a bit more steam, a bit less family tenderness in the HPs I read.  But it's a well told story, I like CL's work.
