Executive Mother-To-Be (Baby on Board) by Nicola Marsh (Harlequin Romance)

One Night in Singapore leads to a career girl's nightmare...but will it also lead to love?

Kristen Lewis TV producer sits in a Singapore bar, stood up by a co-worker buddy in favor of a young temp worker. Hard working to the max and driven, Kristen knows the loneliness of hotels and bars. When she eyes the handsome Nate, dark and morose but ever so sexy, she feels like she has met a kindred soul. As the CEO for his own company, Nate seems to understand her long hours and her passion for work. Together they share a fabulous night. Months later, Kristen walks into her first day of work at a new job. Called in to meet her new boss, Nathan boyd, Kristen is shocked to see the face of her Singapore Nate, the man she cannot get out of her heart. Both driven professionals, Kristen and Nate decide to keep things on a professional level --- but their decision chafes at their very hearts. Then the worst thing possible happens to this sigle-minded, focused career girl --- not only is she pregnant but she is pregnant with Nate's baby!

This is my first Nicola Marsh read. Besides being a wonderful light read, interspersed with some tense moments, several areas drew my attention. Nicola Marsh has a lot of skill in setting a scene so that when she writes about the characters, the reader is drawn to them and understands them behind the exterior. Her style is quick, sharp and focused --- in just a few well-chosen descriptions, the reader is right there on the scene an in the hearts of her characters. I also very much enjoyed the way she wrote dialogue --- fun, witty and dynamic. But more, as Nate and Kristen encounter each other and spend time together in Australia, one feels them become more and more comfortable with one another through their dialogue. Interesting hero. As with most HR heroes, a good guy with past hurts. I really do love the way these HR authors write their heroes.

In general and on a personal level, I am less of a fan of baby romances than other kinds of romances but I was very impressed with how Nicola Marsh wrote this one. She added several very done well details that made me understand her and how she could end up in the situation she did and still be an intelligent woman. I grew up when women's lib was gaining ground and the one thing parents drove into their children was don't get pregnant and work hard to be successful in your own right. Some dramatic moments here, especially towards the end. She writes drama well --- quick plot with precise details, allowing the story itself to tell the drama.

Thanks! Nicola Marsh's romance

Thanks! This is a very good read. I liked the heroine in this one very much too. On a personal level, I think I have a lot in common with her esp. when I was in school --- very hard worker to an extreme almost. The bar scene in the beginning really showed the h and H's characters right from the beginning.

I did want to add that my comment about baby romances is just personal for those new to this year's Challenge. I met my dh late in life and too late to have children. Would love to have little Glenns running around (not sure I could handle a litle Merri!). I don't dislike babies or even baby romances, it's just not what I automatically grab. However, despite that personal preference, Nicola Marsh's story was a very nice read...the kind that will make me grab for her next romance without hesitation.

Thanks for the great review!

Merri,

thanks for the great review.

With this book I really wanted to focus on character development and show how the hero struggles with loving a new woman and how a career-oriented heroine struggles with a pregnancy she never anticipated in her wildest dreams!

And I'm so glad you picked up on it, which I'm kinda hoping means I did my job ;)

I certainly think you did!

Thanks! And in my opinion you certainly did! I think the way you wrote the scenes adds to that character development quite a lot. I do not want to create spoilers so I am buttoning my lips on some of those details other than to say it is right there from the bar scene and just gets richer as other certain things happen like the employee meeting...oh, my have I felt like Kristen sometimes when I had teacher's meetings!

I am finding

this series has some really terrific books.  I will keep this one in mind.  Thanks for the review Merri.... it makes me want to read it and I love Australia as a setting.

Jeannie

Yes I am a readalholic and I don't want the 12 step program!!!

baby romances

For some reason, these type of romances don't generally appeal to me either.  Not sure why as I haven't really thought about it but I just don't tend to read a lot of them.

Jeannie, thanks for the

Jeannie, thanks for the heads up.  I now have the HR as a subscription so I will be reading more.  One thing I like so far is the variety in the 6. I think having different sorts of books keeps each one special.  I very much related to the heroine in this one --- I am sort of a workaholic....and it's nice to have men around who respect a woman for that and moderate the work focus with something else.  I think that is one of the things I liked about this hero, especially how he treated his employees.  There are quite a few nice work scenes and one scene between the hroine and a co-worker I really liked.  Very tight and precise in just a few words but Nicola Marsh caught a whole world of emotions in just a few sentences.

Grounded in reality

I think that's one of the things I really love about writing for Harlequin Romance, Merri, is the 'grounded in reality' feel of the books.

I like to make my heroes and heroines 'real', with quirks and faults we can all identify with.

Yes, Kris is a workaholic...but it's nice to know a baby is going to change all that Wink
