Some here may remember that I have Lupus …. Well, the wonderful two year remission that I’ve been enjoying, I think is about to end ….. I’ve tried soooo hard to watch and avoid my triggers, but sometimes things are just so beyond our control
Those winter cold germs managed to find me just after Christmas … I was house bound for about five days … and if DH hadn’t helped me by taking me to the Grocery before the stores closed New Years Eve, we would have been eating frozen pizza … and then I fevered all of January 1, and when the fever broke I was like a soggy noodle, absolutely limp …. slowly each day I started to feel stronger, though for some reason this time it seemed to take longer to feel better
Last Friday the 11th I took my Mom for her annual mammogram, bone density and x-rays (she’s a four year breast cancer survivor) and the new Medical Arts building uses those lovely new compact fluorescent bulbs … they were recessed in the ceiling but they were not shielded … Lupus sufferers are not the only ones that are fluorescent light sensitive, many with autoimmune diseases have a very hard time with unshielded fluorescent light … that’s why they need to be shielded behind a screen ….. well, about five minutes in the dressing room with Mom, and I can feel my skin start to crawl and boy oh boy was I getting short tempered …. I finally looked up and seen the new lights, not just a few lights but several spaced about two feet apart!
….. I had to leave Mom and leave the building! …. Needless to say, the Hospital board, my Rheumatologist, the Ontario Lupus Assoc., and Lupus Canada will be hearing from me ….. it is unconceivable for a medical building to have lighting that can be detrimental to the people exposed
… and then the migraine started
My Mom is Ukrainian decent, and Ukrainian New Years was on Monday, however the Ukrainian community held a New Years Eve dinner and dance on Saturday … so having missed out on New Years, John and I decided to go … my migraine was manageable if I avoided alcohol … the dinner was lovely and I found the stamina for a polka or two
………. We left just after the midnight cheers …. My sister and mother left shortly after …. I’d just gotten my jammies on when the phone rings, my sister all hysterical as Mom had fallen from the steps up to front door, she’d called 911, Mom was unconscious ….. well, winter coat and boots on, grab cell phone, keys, and purse and out the door …. I arrived about five minutes before the ambulance ….. lovely gash on Mom’s head, but she was awake and coherent …. Thank God it was only three stitches, and the bruises and whiplash to her muscles … no broken bones …. And around 7:30 am Mom was released to come home … I took the first shift watching Mom … and by the time I could go home to my own bed, it was well into the evening on Sunday
It’s now Wednesday …. And my body clock is still out of whack …the migraine is on again, off again, on again … and I’m exhausted … I’m also very afraid of my Lupus flaring …. I put a call in to my Rheumatologist but he’s on a well deserved vacation … I could see an associate but I’m not yet really flaring … knowing my body, I just feel that something is brewing …. Gosh, I hate this disease and I don’t want to go back on the medications, they’re pretty nasty and each relapse it seems I’m on bigger guns than the last time around …. Sigh
Well, if you all have gotten this far, thank you for reading my vent …. I’m not sure what the purpose of all this is, except it does feel good to put in writing what I’m feeling …
I do have much to be thankful for …. Mom’s okay, sore but she will heal … my sister’s living at home right now, so she can look after Mom and I can be her support … the farming season is in a lull right now; sure I have work but it’s not critical and I can slow my pace (at least until Feb) … and maybe just maybe if I avoid further stress both physical and emotional, I might be able to stay ahead of the nasty beast Lupus
Thanks for listening!

the sister of a friend from college has Lupus, so I've seen your symptoms in action
Sorry everything cumulated so badly, I can sympathise on the unshielded
fluorescent lights, as you say very bad medical building planning there
Hope your mom gets to feeling better soon too and hope that you can just let the stress out as far as possible
Maybe you're wrong about it flaring and you'll still be able to lose yourself in books
Let us know if we can help improve your morale

I want to add my prayers and best wishes as well Katherine.
Having any disease like that can make the most mundane thing seem impossible; I sure hope that everything settles down without anything getting worse.

Going to take a sleeper ........
and hope to get a good nights rest ...... I hate taking them but I think it's time to get a full nights sleep and maybe I can get my cycle back on track
I phoned my family doctor and asked him to run some blood tests ... I'll go in tomorrow for the labs .... if there's something brewing at least one of the tests will be a little screw ball and it will be a good indicator of whats to come
Lupus is like a nasty relative that comes to stay, you're releaved when they finally take a hike, but you know someday they'll be back ... you're never truly rid of them
thank you all for your support .... this is a great place :)
wishing you all a good night ... and may God bless

I'm sorry that you are getting a flare. My mom has Lupus so I know what you are going through.
She had surgery about twenty some years ago and that is when she started getting symptoms. As you know, surgery is one of the triggers for the Lupus to come out.
At first we didn't know what was going on with her. Her doctor would tell her she was stressed and to go on vacation. One of her outward symptoms was that her eyes were very dry. She finally saw an eye doctor who happened to be of African decent. He said that many African American as well as Hispanics, like my mom, have it so he was familiar. She made an appointment with a RA doctor and was diagnosed with Lupus. She was also diagnosed with a condition that her RA doctor told her is sometime present when a person has Lupus. It is Shogrens Syndrom (not sure of the spelling). Anyway, that was making her eyes and mouth really, really dry and was why she was at the eye doctor in the first place. Yuck, her eyes were so dry that they were blood shot all the time. It was such a relief for her just to know it had a name. It took about 3 or 4 years to find out what was wrong from the time her symptoms started.
I am happy to tell you that my mom has been pretty healthy considering that she has Lupus. I think she has been in remission all these years but she does get flares a couple of times a year and she uses artificial tears a lot but it is not bad like years ago.
Get some rest and take care of yourself. I will keep you in my prayers about this and pray that you stay in remission.
Margie :)
Really hope...
...that things improve for you and your fmaily soon.
Take care,

Gosh, you all are fantastic ............
I feel so much better after my vent ... and last night's sleeper knocked me out pretty good, and I slept through the night .... normally, on particularly restless nights, I take only 1/2 a pill, but I took a whole one last night ... wonderful
just wish the sun would come out ... then I'd really be smiling ..... I rather hate dull winter days, so tiring all on their own
and I finished the second book in a duet by Alison Roberts .... so if I get a chance I'll write up the reviews and post them
(((Margie)) ..... sending hugs for your Mom .... glad she's been relatively symptom free, and yes, a physcial trauma like surgery is a definite trigger for Lupus .... I'm sad to say that your Mom's four year battle to find out what was wrong is so very typical for Lupus patients .... if there were a blood test that said yay or nay, then so many people would be treated early rather than too late .... it's Sjogren's Syndrome (though spelling it shogrens is right for how you say it) that causes the drys, can be dry eyes, dry nose, dry mouth, even dry down there .... nasty, and often one of those ailments that go hand in hand with autoimmune diseases ..... so glad her eye doc was on the ball with that ... I'm praying your Mom continues on with a good healthy life ..... it's so wonderful to hear of others who are doing so well
well, I think it's time to try to write some reviews!

in my thoughts
Katherine,
You and your mom are in our prayers and thoughts. I did not realize you had Lupus. My cousin and closest person i have to having had a sister growing up has Lupus.
I hope you get some rest. Having a sleep cycle out of whack can throw everything off. Hope you can find a book that will lull you like a lullaby.

Prayers
Sending prayers your way for both you and your mom. My BF's mom has Lupus and I know what a debilitating disease it can be! I wasn't aware about the lights though. {{{HUGS}}}
Thanks (((Everyone)))
I took my Mom to get her stitches out yesterday and so far so good ..... I can't get over her bruising though ... the whole back of her head is purple under her hair ... and she has so many large bruises on her arms, back and legs .... the one on her upper right arm goes from the elbow up to her shoulder ... but she's healing
that exposure to the compact flourescents is still lingering .... off again, on again migraine .... my labs were good with a few notables, so will be watching for any sign of a Lupus flare .... my Rheumatologist is back next week and I've already made an appointment with his secretary ... so I go on Friday to give another 10 vials of blood for more labs ... argh
so hopefully all will be quiet on the Lupus front .... I don't quite feel as agitated as I did ..
thank you all for your support ... it means so very much,
Katherine
