Lee Lucas, the infamous warlock, has been locked in loneliness since his wife died five years ago. His only joys in life are his daughter, Erin, and the mystery woman who meets him on the spiritual plane every night in his dreams. When Lee returns to his home of Leto Island with his daughter for the Halloween Festival, he is shocked to meet his dream woman, Ashley Stevens, in the flesh. Now Lee finds his heart slowly opening once more. Has he been Bewitched by Fate?
It is often extremely difficult to squeeze enough emotional growth into the characters in such a short story. However, Lee Morrison does a wonderful job fleshing out her characters to make us care about them in the short period of time we get to spend with them in Bewitched by Fate. Lee is still suffering from some depression over losing his wife and blames magic for her death, which in turn has caused him to turn his back on his heritage. Yet as his daughter grows older and more interested in learning who she is, he slowly begins to come around, if for no other reason but to give Erin what she needs. When he meets Ashley in the flesh, while still resistant to letting his memories of his wife go, and his denial of his craft, Ashley helps him to heal in spirit through her compassionate nature.
There are a few portions of the story I’d have liked to see explored more in depth, particularly in regards to why Lee blames magic for his wife dying. However, Morrison covers all the key components of the story and left me with a smile at the end of Bewitched by Fate, as the belief that love can overcome anything is reaffirmed.
