In another lifetime they were joined by a forever love so strong it could survive even death. Michael the Dragon Keeper saved Belle’s people from a cruel winter that would destroy them all, by bringing her the Dragon’s Fire, only to succumb to his injuries. Now, in this lifetime, they find each other once more. Now they have a second chance at the happiness denied them so long ago.

While Dragon’s Fire had an intriguing premise, it failed to fully deliver for me. Much of the story felt rushed, most likely due to the short length of the story. I felt like Sheri Lewis Wohl could have expanded so much on the two plot lines from the present and the past. The world building for the past lifetime was just glossed over, not giving enough detail to really make the story come alive. We are shown and told primarily just how dedicated Belle was in awaiting her lover’s return. The Dragon’s Fire concept was fascinating in that it was to be the salvation of the House of Obert, but I would have loved more background on where it came from and why that was the primary source of heat and life during the long winter.

I also would have loved a little more interaction between Michael in the present time and his heroine, a librarian whose name was never mentioned that I can recall. Their story especially is too hasty in how it develops and I would have liked to see a little more between them then what we got, maybe a glimpse into their lives much later at least.

Dragon’s Fire is a good story to read if you are in a hurry and not looking for a lot of depth to the tale. Sheri Lewis Wohl shows promise as an author, but I would love to see a longer book by her, one where she has a chance to delve into a richer fantasy. I felt like Dragon’s Fire would have done much better as a longer story. Even in novella length, I think there would have been plenty of time to embellish on the potential this fantasy world offers.
