I'm compiling a list of favourite Christmas songs for the novella. One of my personal faves is Snoopy and the Red Baron (Snoopy's Christmas) - but I don't know that the rest of the world (ie not NZ) even knows it - is it huge out there or just here???
(Click here http://natalie-anderson.blogspot.com/ to watch a vid if you have no idea what I'm talking about!!!)

Snoopy and the Red Baron has been around here (NA) for years -- one local radio station has already started playing christmas songs and that is one of the songs that is frequently played.

Oh good
- thanks Nancy - I figured it must but you know when I worked in Edinburgh (which is where this book is set) most of my workmates had never heard of it!!! (Mind you, this could have been due to the way I sung it
)
I do like it though. I think my fave traditional one is 'O Holy Night' but to be honest I'm a sucker for most of them - what's your fave?

Kathy Mattea does a song
Kathy Mattea does a song called, Mary Did You Know, that is one of my favorites, but there are soooo many christmas songs and carols that are wonderful. It really makes it a challenge for me to pick just one. I probably have several dozen that I could call my favorite one at any given time.
The Cherry Tree Carol is another favorite one.
In the Bleak Mid-Winter (there are at least two versions which I love).
Some Children See Him -- it speaks of how children all over the world seeing the christ child as looking like them
Star in the East (Brightest and Best) -- an open harmony shape note version that is incredible--as long as it is done in the 4 part harmony
There is a Scottish, Christ Child Lullaby, that is haunting.
The german carol, Lo, How a Rose e'er Blooming, done in a trio arrangement that we have has three female voices weaving in and out--sweet
The Wexford Carol is another haunting tune
Another one that I love from the Kathy Mattea recording is, Nothing But a Child
A La Nanita Nana is another sung that has a haunting melody
I Wonder as I wander
Oh dear, I guess you really shouldn't get me started. LOL

Yes, I know the Snoopy and the Red Baron song very well. Nancy is correct. It's very popular here in the USA. Of course since I collect Snoopy / Peanuts stuff, this makes me an even bigger fan. O Holy Night is another favorite. I love all the traditional carols. I must have over 50 Christmas CDs. Mary, Did You Know is so pretty. I also love White Christmas - two different versions by Bing and The Drifters. Some Children See Him by Andy Williams, Christmas is Meant for Children by Fred Waring, Merry Christmas, Darling by the Carpenters and All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey. And many versions of Go Tell It on the Mountain, Carol of the Bells, I Wonder as I Wander, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and Silent Night.

I love O Holy Night
A lot of artists put too much flourish into it, IMHO. I love lots of Xmas songs. Hence, my 30+ Xmas CD collection. I love I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas, but for serious carols, hmmm, I don't know if I can choose. I've just bopped over to my iTunes library, which includes only the CDs that I've taken time to rip and ummm I think it's easier to pick my favorite albums. If you told me that I could only have two, I'd keep A Cafe Christmas (folk-sounding) and Christmas on the Border (south Texas sound). But it would be hard, b/c I have CDs that invoke the sound of Country, R&B, Cajun, New Orleans (there's a difference), Blues, Gospel, classical American (Bing, Perry, Nat King Cole), Jazz, Big Band, I can't even think of what else without going over to look.
Oh, and while I was there I looked and I have seven different artists' recordings of O Holy Night. That's just from the CDs that I've put in my library. Wonder if I have more? Hmmm. . .
Okay, Xmas songs that I love (not including Hippopatamus on this list, but I probably should LOL)
And I'm sure when others start listing their favs, I'll be going, "Oh! Yeah! I love that one, too!"

Christmas Hippos
ok, so now 've wasted some time on youtube discovering the hippo song- thanks Penn!
There are a squillion versions from the Jonas Bros but I kinda like the Shirley Temple one. I can't believe you and Tammy have so many Christmas CDs!!! I'm quite green about that cos I do love Xmas music - and all the decorations and stuff (I'm having a lot of fun with this book - have too may Xmas things actually to squeeze in!!!)
You've brought back a ton of memories too Nancy - I remember singing a lot in choir - esp In the Bleak Midwinter - nice one.
Mariah and her 'All I want for Xmas' already features as does Bing and his White Xmas of course but now I have a nice list to go play with (I don't have a Xmas CD collection sadly - thank goodness for Youtube!!!!)

I'm up in the dozens of
I'm up in the dozens of christmas CDs and I still have around 30 LPs--you know those huge CD shaped discs that spin on a -- gasp -- record player. LOL
I can't give them up, so many of them have not been re-released in CD format.
Penn--even if I limited myself to naming favorite Christmas recordings I would have several dozen. Like you, I have a wide range of styles. One is a Calypso Christmas recording from my childhood that I just found on CD format (amazon) last year. In fact, I placed 30 christmas cds in my wishlist on amazon and purchased at least half of them last year alone.
Please don't ask about my christmas villages. (Yes, plural.) We put villages up in every room of the house. We have over 70 houses. It is not my fault. My dh kept going into our local owned hardware store and they would sell these gorgeous houses for $10 a house, and then they would go on half price sale. I got a lot of them as christmas presents. LOL Decorating day is black Friday.

LOL Well, you just took
LOL Well, you just took my DH on a little trip down memory lane with the Snoopy vid. My favorite Christmas songs are:
Carol of the Bells by Mannheim Steamroller
Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid
Song for a Winter's Night by Sarah McLachlan
I probably have more faves, but haven't dug the CDs out yet. Delilah has been playing Christmas music for the past week or two on her radio show every evening.
I do the Hippopotamus song at karaoke night. LOL
Christmas music
Natalie, I had maybe 10 CDs, then after my Dad passed away in 1998, I got his whole collection - so 25 more. Then every year, I get a few more new Christmas CDs. So, now I have over 50. I do love Christmas music. They have already started to play it on the radio here.

Natalie,
My ultimate favorite is "Oh Holy Night" sung by Nat King Cole. There's something about the quality of his voice singing it that just gives me chills. But I love soooooooo many Christmas carols, including, of course, "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron". (JV sings "10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or more...") I also love the Alvin and the Chipmunks "Christmas Don't Be Late", "Carol of the Bells", "Silver Bells", "The Christmas Song", and about a trillion others. I love not only the song "White Christmas" but also watching the video of the same name. I could watch "A Christmas Carol" every year and never get tired of it. And, in the spirit of equal opportunity, I really like Adam Sandler's "Hanukkah" song. It's pretty funny. One I can't say I really like but that qualifies as way quirky is "Grandma Got Run Over by a Raindeer."
Nancy, I have a bunch of songs on vinyl also. My DH got a cool converter last year that came from the Sharper Image. It's a turntable. You play your albums on the turntable, and it converts them to MP3 digital format to burn to CD. We're sporadically converting our vinyl just to make sure we always have it.

Loved it!
LOL, no I hadn't heard the song before but I absolutely loved it! It took me a couple of years before I heard the Hippo Christmas song so don't use me in deciding if it is a popular song. I do not get good radio reception in my house so I don't hear new songs until a friend tells me about it and I can look it up on the computer.

Snoopy and the Red Baron
Oh wow, you just touched on something very personal for me. Snoopy and the Red Baron (in all its seasonal forms) has been a family friend for years.
My younger brother used to torment me by playing his 45's of the original song and the Christmas version over and over and over and...
Now that we're grown up and he's stationed overseas it has become a running joke. Just last month I sent him a birthday email that was appropriately teasing and fun for a big sister, and lo and behold, he sent me back a message that, as soon as I opened it, started playing Snoopy vs. the Red Baron. AGGH! But what a fun memory to share.
I love Christmas music in almost any form. Some of my faves are Mannheim Steamroller. Their "Still, Still, Still" makes me tear up almost every time I hear it.

Yes, 'Snoopy' is alive and well in Canada.
So is the Rovers' singing 'Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer' although some stations had to pull it off the air due to an uprising fromt he elderly population.
There's no way I can list all my fav Christmas songs but my fav albums/CD's are by:
- Elvis
- Roger Whittaker
- Kenny Rogers
- Alabama
- Boney M
- anything Western
- awh...there's just too many

Oh great so now I have more to youtube!
But this is very helpful - thank you. Gosh and you've made me realise that I have no idea where all my old records (vinyl) are - of course I didn't have anything Christmassy but I did have the Muppets which was a classic - LOL.
That's such a great story about your brother Julie - I love little jokes like that, that run within families - shared history, shared life - and how a song or a scent or a scene can bring it all back - really, really cool.
Acutally, I torment my husband with nightly repeats of Jingle Bell Rock by Hall & Oates at the moment. Just one of life's little amusements ;)

Snoopy's Christmas
Natalie I love Snoopy and the Red Baron. Its already been played this Christmas season on the radio here in Canada. Another one I like is Linus and Lucy, it's not really Christmas but I hear it more often during this time of year.
Other favourites are I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm; Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!; Baby, It's Cold Outside; Popsicle Toes and, of course, White Christmas.
Nothing more relaxing than a good book and a cup of tea.
Six White Boomers
I think my favorite is O Holy Night followed by Mary's Boy Child. I absolutely love Silent Night sung with just a guitar. I love the novelty songs as well and it isn't Christmas until I have heard them all. That includes Six White Boomers and since last year the Hippo song. Rudoph the Rednosed Reindeer, Leroy the Rednecked Reindeer, various versions of a Partridge in a Pear Tree, Frosty the Snowman etc. It's too early for Christmas songs but I received my first Christmas card last Thursday so I have made my list and will be starting to do them soon and then I will dig out some music to get me in the mood.
PS Yes I love Snoopy!!!

Too early for Christmas songs?!?
My DD was thrilled because last weekend she heard Christmas carols in the stores for the first time this season.
By the way, I haven't heard the hippo Christmas song. Guess I'll have to look that one up and one other one someone mentioned.
Oh, and in terms of the quirky ones, I like "Santa Baby" by either Eartha Kitt or Madonna.

Aretha Franklin
While watching Dancing With the Stars I heard that Aretha is putting out her first ever Chritmas CD. I want to hear it now. My sister got me watching this program but we do have different tastes in a lot of things. She doesn't like Aretha,or blues, country, bluegrass etc. I have a much more diverse liking of the world than she does. Most of the Christmas Albums or CD's I listen to are based in country or Canadian origins so might not be widely known.
