Friendships Ebb and Flow, but True Friendships Never Die!

Holly&Rae.jpg

I had an old friend (old as in years we’ve known each other, not as measure of her years) over today for lunch. We try to make it an annual event. One day each summer, we get together and play catch up. What our kids are doing (kids do tend to get top billing), and what we’re each up to.

It’s hard to believe that twenty years ago I talked to her almost every day. We both volunteered for the same organization and touched base frequently on what was going on with our group, meetings and new members. And during all those business touching bases, a firm friendship grew. I visited and got her boys into trouble, she visited and spoiled my kids rotten. (Uh, did you notice I was wreaking havoc, while she was being sweet? Yes, that’s the nature of our friendship! LOL)

For years we were tight. Then our kids got older. Gradually, we eased away from that volunteer job. She went back to work as a teacher. I started writing. And life got busy for both of us. We both went in different directions. And yet, each summer with very few exceptions, we come back together and reconnect. And that firm friendship is still there. She’s the type of friend who would come if I called. And I hope she knows that works the other way around!

My kids laugh because I have so many online friends, people I’ve never met, or see infrequently when I travel. But there’s a firm foundation there as well. They cheer me on when I need it, they send me hugs when needed. And I hope I manage to reciprocate for them.

Remember the old song? "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other’s gold." I’m blessed to be surrounded by both the silver kind, and the gold kind. I try to connect with both, whether it’s at a lunch once a year, or with a phone call, or just online. Friends enrich my life...and in case I haven’t said it often enough...thanks to all of you for being part of my ever growing collection of silver and gold friends!

I'm glad, Nancy!  Have you done anything fun lately with any of them?  I'm heading to San Francisco in a few weeks, and odds are I'll have a ton of good times with friends there!

Holly, that's so true!

I have a few life-long friends, known them since 7 years old.  I lost contact with one for 24 years, but when we met again, we could talk to each other like old times.  Since then, we made an effort to keep in touch by phone, (she lives in another country) at least once a month.  I have made many new friends too, neighbors, co-workers, etc.  I consider myself very very lucky.

Orchid, Oh how cool to have reconnected after all that time!!  So glad you're keeping in touch!!

I have a friend, Lori, who's been with me since school.  She's moved out of state, but we still keep in touch.  And she's one of those friends who will always be there for me.  When we lost my MIL, I called her.  She'd just flown from Alaska to Virginia, got in her car and drove to PA to be here with us.  She's a treasure!

That's so sweet

Your friend's very sweet & supportive.  Wow!

There's something about those friends whom we know when we were young, when we were still innocent, full of dreams & laughters, when we had no reserves & told each other all our secrets.  Then we grow up, college/study, work, marriage, kids, illness, deaths, ... etc, nothing rosy anymore.

There's just a warm feeling to talk to those childhood friends, bring back a lot sweet & innocence  memories.  I am not undermining the 'new' friendships, they are just as precious as the 'old' friendships.

I remember I read it somewhere: a friend is a person who know but tolerate all your faults and still love you.

Friends

Orchid,

Oh, I love that saying.  And it's so true!   I'm heading to a National conference, and I'm lucky to have a friend who rooms with me every year...despite the fact I do mornings and she doesn't so much!  LOL

Enjoy yourselves during your stay in San Francisco.  Work & Fun & reconnecting with your friends at the same time.  What more can we ask!  Cool

Orchid

p.s. there are many interesting places to go to in the  S.F. Bay Area, I am sure you'll have a great time.

Orchid...SF

Orchid,

I'm traveling from Erie to SF with Susan Gable, and she's putting together our sight-seeing adventures.  She's very good at that stuff, and I'm very good at just following her lead.  I want to see as much as possible...well, except for the prison.  I don't want to go.  LOL

 Have a great day!

Frenchie,

I don't want to say I have claustrophobia, because my dislike of enclosed places isn't quite that bad, but I don't like them.  Factories, old prisons...those are the things my nightmares are made of.   Plus the thought of a lifetime of misery there...nope, not a Hollyish sort of place.  I'd rather be working on my stones...or weeds!  LOL  Or your stones or weeds!!  LOL

Hi Holly, just got back to

Hi Holly, just got back to your blog. Have fun in SF. I get together with some of my lifelong friends periodically. One of them just graduated from the same seminary my daughter is attending. They had some classes together this past year. It was such a sweet connection for both of them. So I'm sharing a gold friend who has become a silver friend of my daughter.Smile

SF has Chilly Summer

Hi, Holly,

Just a thought, you may already know.  Remember to bring sweater/jacket, but you can buy those 'left my heart in SF' sweater Money mouth as souvenir.  SF's weather is famous for windy, sunnyCool, foggy, overcast summer days.  Once a while, if you are 'lucky' , all happens in one day, random order (four seasons in one day)Tongue out

Have fun.

You'll Enjoy SF

Holly,

I am sure you'll be enjoying SF, now that you have a jacket, a light sweater, long pants, short pants, hat, scarf, ... & so on. You're well prepared, so you probably don't need those extra layers (Murphy's Law, right?!)

Wink
