Get me an Ark!!

P6300038.JPG

Yesterday, the rain here was horrible.  The weather report said some areas of town had more than six inches of rain in under an hour.  There was flooding all over...on our street even.

We bought our house five years ago from my dh's mom.  His parents built it in 1959.  He grew up here and remembers when the street flooded on a regular basis.  But the city has done some work on the sewer system, and we haven't had any flooding until yesterday.  We're very thankful that we're up high enough on the hill that we didn't have any problems.  But neighbors down the street had flooded basements.

That's our street...covered in water.

And if you look closely at the big picture at the top of the post, that small yellow dot is the fire hydrant!

Hoping we don't get too much rain today!

OMG, I guess you do need an ark.  My parents in Maine have gotten rain for the last week and a half.  They got 5 inches on one day, but at 6 inches, you've got them beat.

Frenchie,

Did your parents have any flooding?  Hope not!  The drains kicked in after a few hours, but it was weird watching the water creep up!

Oh, that's not good, Holly!

I feel so bad for your neighbors!  Hopefully they were able to move most of their belongings to higher levels of their houses....

We had a storm system go

We had a storm system go through our area yesterday afternoon that dumped a ton of water, however our house is set up on the high point in the area. The houses all around ours are at a lower level. It means we get to watch our driveway washout onto the road every time there is a storm like yesterday's.

We still have several days of storms in the forecast.

Rain

Jodie, I hope no one lost too much...our one neighbor's garage was drenched, but he had most of his things up.

Nancy, We have more rain coming in the next few days, too.  Hoping it doesn't come quite as fast!

So sorry

for the neighbors when the last storm hit our area (Texas) three of my friends were flooded out and one had just put in new floors. Several neighborhoods in my area were without power for a few days. It was not fun around here for awhile. Hope it doesn't get too bad.

Flooding

Deb,

Oh, I'm sorry for your neighbors!  Everything's gone now, and if it doesn't rain so hard and fast, I'm hoping we're done!

Rain, RAIN!!!!

Sure wish those of you getting all the rain would send some down my way as we are looking at water rationing soon if we don't get some.  Having said that I don't want any high winds (as in hurricanes) to go along with the rain.  At the same time I hope all of you stay safe and dry inside the house and are careful if you happen to be caught out in it.

I know so many friends who say they're areas are dry.  Wishing I could share with all of you!!  Hoping you get some rain soon...not ark inspiring rain, but rather a green everything up kind.

Still no rain today, though it's grey and murky out!

I'm like Ellen Too

You could send your rain to anywhere in Alberta as the whole province is talking of DROUGHT. Not good for the farmers who got of to a slow start because of late frosts. So far in Calgary we aren't talking water rationing yet but it will come if we don't get more rain. Everywhere we have traveled for my husband's job there are fire bans. Coming home late Monday night we were driving through a much needed rain storm.  It would be so good if we could just send storms away from areas with too much rain to areas that need it. I hear Ellen Too on the strong winds as there was a tornado in Alberta last week. Hopefully your rains don't come too quickly Holly and Nancy and anyone else in danger of flooding.

Arks and rain

Thanks, Dream!  It's raining now, but it's much softer, so it's not too bad.

Kaelee, I'm so sorry to hear you're having trouble with drought there, too.  Hugs.  Hoping you get some rain!

Holly

Glad to hear you didn't need an ark.  We've had a lot of rain all week and more expected for today and tomorrow, but nothing like that.  We have had spot flooding in areas but not like your pictures.  Hope if you get more rain it will just be a little not a downpour.

Nothing more relaxing than a good book and a cup of tea.

BB

BB,  Everything seems fine today...though there are spots in the road that the water sort of washed out.

Hoping it stays just rainy and doesn't get too bad there!

Wow!

Scary! So glad you didn't get the flooding, but I feel for your neighbors. We've had problems here, too, with the sewer drains not running the water off quick enoiugh. We don't have drains in our basement, and those around here who do experience water backing up into their houses. What a mess it can be!

Hope you're all dried up now!

Ami

Ami

I know what you mean.  Flooding in the basement is a mess.  Fortunately my parents home haven't had flooding in years, but I remember it well - the water, the smell and the damage.  Lifting rugs up and putting fans down to finish drying the floor and the carpet.  But thank goodness that's behind us now, the house was sold and closed last month.  But I definitely feel for those who have water damage in the basement.

Nothing more relaxing than a good book and a cup of tea.

Basement Water

Ami, Yes, it can be a huge mess.  I feel for the neighbors and for the others in town who had problems!  Why don't they put drains in your basements there??

BB, Glad that your parents haven't had problems for years.  I can only imagine how much of a pain it was.

Wet Weather

We have had lots of water in our area too although not as much as you at one time. Yesterday one of the paramedics I work with said if it continues raining through the weekend we will set a new record for number of consecutive days with rain. That is a distiction I can do without. Your flood pictures are awesome. We have floods here every spring (they call it the spring freshet) and I am heartly glad we live on a hill. To our friends out west and down south who are dry, you are most welcome to come and take as much of this wet weather as you would like.

My brother and family and a friend are up here for the summer from Florida. They welcome the wet and foggy weather and temperatures that haven`t reached 20 degrees C for weeks.

Spring Freshet

Linda, I love the term Spring Freshet!  Okay, so I'm not overly fond of the spring floods it represents, but it sounds lovely.  I love your region of Canada, and really want to visit the Maritimes someday.  I've loved PEI since I first read the Anne books.  My dh and I have talked about traveling up that way when the last of the kids are gone!  I'm glad you're up on a hill, too!  Hills are good.  And while I sometimes moan about mine when I'm mowing the lawn, I've decided that it's a very nice feature!

Nancy, right now, the rain's stopped again.  I'm hoping it stays stopped for a while!  No thunder here yet!

Drains

Holly, I don't know why we don't have drains. Other houses around here do. I do have 2 sump pumps, one that's for our hit-or-miss waterproofing system, and another one that we use for the washer but I'm guessing is original to the house (1940-ish). (the pump's not that old, but the system is!) We don't get wet like my neighbors do.

It's raining right now, a nice, steady rain, not those awful downpours we've had lately and you guys had yesterday.

Ami

Ami

Ami,

If you and I ran the world, all basements would have drains!!  LOL  I'm glad your basement doesn't get wet like your neighbors!  It's drizzling here, too, but not bad at all!

Holly,

Usually when basements don't have drains it's because they are below the level of the sewer line.  Drains only work if they are above the sewer level so that water drops down into the sewer.  If a drain were installed above the sewer level, then sewer stuff would tend to run into their basement.  Ewwwww!  Our basement, for example, is below the sewer line, so we have a kind of basement well in one corner where any water drains and a sump pump to pump the water up higher than the sewer level and out of the house.
