This book by Arundhati Roy is a rather disturbing look at the ripples caused by one choice. When Ammu and Velutha make the decision to ignore the class boundaries preventing a relationship between them, neither can guess at the horrible actions they have set into motion. The revelations about Ammu's family add an additional dimension to the events taking place at the time of the story as it is their dysfunction that centers the book.
Though this book does offer some very disturbing scenes, such as the interaction between Estha and the orangedrink lemondrink man at the theater, it is also the heartwrenching story of two siblings torn apart by events beyond their control. The whole book is about their journey back to each other through the misplaced guilt they've felt about their role in the events that took ended in their separation.
I wouldn't recomment this book to anyone looking for a lighthearted read, but I most definitely recommend it.
