I wish there were more Sci-Fi titles with a strong romance story!
The story: Sirantha Jax can jump ships through grimspace. When her last mission fails she gets the blame for it. Unable to remember any of it, she is subjected to various tests and treatments. She is imprisoned and happy enough when she gets rescued by March and his crew. They need her to help them build an academy for jumpers independent of the Corp. But Jax is close to burn out and might not have many jumps left in her. Every jump takes her closer to her own death.
I read many very good reviews about this book. I don't feel it is a good as people say. The basic idea is good, the characters work very well for a futuristic romance, but I missed some things. I LOVE Battlestar Galactica, Firefly and Star Wars and it was great fun seeing elements/scenes/characters of those shows/movies in Grimspace, but they are not very original. And when I read a book set in space I want more descriptions, I want to be able to visualize the created world. I also felt that the love story shouldn't have been so rushed. Why not wait a book or two for the characters to get together? Why not take the time to build up the attraction? After all, Grimspace is the first book in a series. I would have liked more action and less romance and more pages invested in the climax of the book. It is an entertaining start to a new series, but not there yet with the likes of Linnea Sinclair and Sharon Lee/Steve Miller. It should be interesting to see where Ann Aguirre will go with the series and what original ideas she can come up with.
Series: first book in the Jax series
Rating: good
