Has the way you buy books changed over the years?
I know I've always enjoyed the whole shopping experience in brick and mortar stores, from the overall ambience to just having a chance to look at every single book that is on the shelves in a specific genre. I've discovered some great finds through simply looking at what was out there and reading the blurb and the first few pages. Online buying changed my shopping a bit at first, as even the brick and mortar stores offered better prices online for their hardcovers and trade paperbacks. So I kept shopping in the actual stores, but would then purchase those books online, while continuing to buy mass market at the brick and mortar stores. But all that is changing rapidly now. Why, you ask. Well, quite simply the price of gas is making me think hard about just how many books I could have bought with the amount of money I'm spending on the gas to go shopping! I don't want this to become a rant about the high price of gas here (believe me, I did enough of that ranting yesterday as I filled up!). But it just made me think as I'm starting to buy almost all my books online now. However, it does make me miss out on those precious and unexpected finds. I still get a chance to look at the bestseller and Harlequin authors at places like WalMart, but the midlist or practically unknown authors~ I feel like I'm missing out!
So have your book buying methods changed over the years?

Well yes and no........
The past few years have been different for me as I was putting my husband thru flight school so I didn't buy near as many books as I did previously. I'm pretty lucky as my job is next to quite a few stores, a UBS, and a bookstore. I don't really think too much about the gas since I have to drive to work anyways and it's right across the street. I've always tried to drive "efficiently" (do as many errands as possible at once) when I go out since I live far away from major store chains. I do look online at books but tend to still buy in the B&M stores. I also use a book service so books are sent to me on a regular basis and I'm not spending TONS of $$$ on new ones. And yes, I would probably spend TONS of $$$ if I didn't use that service! LOL I like books way too much!
Funnily enough when I had access to a library, I didn't buy
half as many books, just keepers. Now that I don't have the B&M
option, I buy far more books, but what I do (for ebay auctions and the
like) is find lots that have at least a few books I'm actively looking
for, note the other titles and then google/amazon them to see what
they're about, it's a bit like reading the back blurbs and a few pages
Not
much else I can do in my situation - I so hear you on the price of
"gas", diesel here is gone over the 1,30 € mark even at the cheapest
stations

Library
I can agree on the library part Sadhbh! They know me by name - even the ones I hardly see!
I guess I'm there a tad too much!
Books
I used to get a lot of my books from a used book store until they all closed in my city. I also woked in the mall at one time,so I had time to shop in the mall bookstores on my breaks.
I have always loved getting books at the library and I usually only buy books I can't get there. My library now has all their books on their internet site, so I can request any book they have anywhere and they send it to my branch for me to pick up.
Today - I buy all my Harlequin books from e-harlequin. (Better prices than Target or Walmart, plus I get all the titles I want and the books are not worn looking) Other books I buy from Amazon and wait until I am over 25.00 to get free shipping. Sometimes I will get nice lots of used books on ebay (they replaced the old used books stores!) I love internet shopping for books because it's faster and easier than driving to stores.

mostly
I have a hard time getting to some of the brick and mortar stores but then I don't have a credit card. For harlequin books I order online at eharlequin. And then if another store takes payment other than a credit card I'll order from them but only if the shipping costs haven't given me a heart attack.

I have a few good UBS near me, so that helps. But I tend to not buy online - unless I have recieved gift cards to Chapters since their prices are better online. And you get free shipping over $39. The only Harlequin's I buy every month are the Nocturnes, so I pick them up at the grocery store.

I changed when I started reading Bombshell
I loved the Bombshell series and wanted to buy the books every month as soon as they came out. I used to just browse the B&M stores and see if I saw anything interesting. I didn't buy all the books in one series. I found out that e-harlequin lets you get the books a month early and that was all she wrote. I was ordering online every month. That continues to this day even though Bombshell is defunct :(. I replaced my Bombshells with Blaze and Nocturne. I buy all eight books every month. I also buy the NASCAR books and some Historicals. I still go to the B&M stores and browse, but I buy fewer books from that browsing.

I love the ebooks and
I love the ebooks and have been buying them but I am trying to reduce my stock of paper books (at least to the ones I want to keep) so thats what I'm reading. Also I am waiting for PDA - just bought one online.
I bought a lot of books on ebay ( and ended up with a lot of others I didn't particularly want as they were in the package) and as I result I have all these books I feel I should read as I bought them and paid the postage.- which was often more than the books. .
Now I've found www.betterworld.com where I picked up the particular books I wanted and shipping to Australia was reasonable- otherwise its really expensive. (its free shipping in the US).

I am buying
I am buying more on the Kindle now to reduce my collection. So I download anything that I don't think will be a keeper for me. I still have to buy my favorites in print just to keep my collections going. I'm also buying more audios as it's easier to listen and get other things done. I still have to stop on my way home and browse the bookstores sometimes cause there's still nothing as good as holding the print book in my hand even if I don't buy it and then again sometimes I just have to buy it or them.

Wow
Lots of great responses! It's interesting to hear how everyone's buying style has changed and for various reasons too!
I'm going to have to check out that one website to see if that is an option for me. Buying online is becoming a bigger thing to me. One good bit of news is that they built a Books A Million near one of the schools I cover so on some days I can use my lunch break for a bit of shopping. My fave used bookstore is not near me so I save it for special trips but there is one near me, just not one I particularly like. And yes, I've been using the library more as well, too.
Sadhbh, just out of curiosity, any idea what that translates to for diesel in American dollars? I think it's over $4 here for diesel. I know I paid $3.61 for the cheapie 87 gas just yesterday. UGH! That's almost a book a gallon!

Books
The way I buy book has changed over the years. Before I would buy a book if it was by an author I liked and/or I liked the blurb on the back. Now because I have to be careful on how much I spend on books I check the Romantic Times Book Magazine. I don't waste my money on books that are okay. I spend it on books that are either four or four and a half stars. I also found a company that rents books for a set price each month. I order books that are older or books that I have found I don't want to spend my hard earned money on. Our county library system doesn't carry the newer romance books
Buying books... my favourite occupation!
I love shopping for books and although I do purchase a lot on-line, nothing beats finding that new release in a B&M store or a treasured oldie in a UBS. I buy some harlequins on-line, however, where I live (Vancouver, BC) the early month order of next months releases usually takes over 3 weeks to get here. So, since the Presents are released in the other stores around the 23rd of the month, I only order the books I know I can't buy retail or are released later in the month or there's a BIG discount to good to ignore.
I rarely buy from Chapters - I get ticked at them wanting me to pay $25 for the privilege of saving 10%. No thanks, I can get discounts at other stores for free. I buy a lot from Amazon, especially Brava - usually they are $20 retail, on-line around $13. Big savings.
I love UBS shopping and am fortunate to have about 3 fairly close to me, and another 5 stores 30 to 60 minutes away.

Not really...
I do a little of both...especially if a follow up to a series is coming out, I just pre order it and have it deliverd so I dont forget.
But today I was browsing through Borders and found two follow ups I forgot about.

Got Books?
For those who asked:
1.30 €/ liter with a Euro equal to between $1.50 and $1.60==>$1.95 to $2.08/liter x 4= between $7.80 to $8.32/gallon

FF, that is awful! I knew gas was higher over there but ugh!!
Don't those little cards they charge for just drive you nuts? I finally gave in and got the one for Books A Million since it's nearby but it just makes me so mad to buy one of those cards. The BAM one is cheaper than B&N~ sounds like Chapters' card is in line with B&N's card, though.

I used to have a "discount" card...
at Chapters, renewal date in December. In October they had a sale on - buy or renew for $20 - but they wouldn't renew from Dec to Dec, no, I'd lose 2 months and would be Oct to Oct. I sure gave them an earful about that and that's when I dumped them. I do buy the odd thing there and they always ask if I want to purchase a membership. I take great pleasure in saying why would I do that, when every other store around offers discounts for free? Yes, they have more selection, but so does Amazon and many of their books are discounted. I have to laugh yesterday I was looking for a picuture to use on this site and Chapters had a book for $7.99 and ohhhhh! if you were a member you got it for $7.20. Wow!

Discount Cards
I opted not to renew my BAM discount card this year. I knew I just wouldn't recoup the $10 back! LOL Normally I used to buy bunches of books and easily recouped the $10 plus tons more money back since I bought a lot of coffee at Joe's, too. It really was worth the $10 for me especially when it came to the clearance stuff!!! Maybe in the future I'll do it again.
I'm always looking for good sales....
Like Lauren Victoria, I buy a lot of books on ebay, but sometimes there are duplicates in the mix because you have to buy them in lots. Fortunately, I've found a dealer who lets me pick from her buy-it-now books and then matches one for every one that I buy, so that I end up with two of them for the price of one (if that makes any sense). Also I am fortunate that I have a bookstore nearby, even though I'm in a small town. It may not have every book available on the shelf (because it's small), but I can always find something. Another source is my local library's booksales. They sale their Harlequins and paperback romances pretty cheap. Last of all, I buy books up at garage and yard sales - around here we have plenty of those!
Debiw781, from my POV, you're definitely right about the gas! I think if I had to drive very far for my books, I'd be purchasing a lot more ebooks!
Some more thoughts...
I like the fact that buying the ebooks also means the author is getting the royalties too. Tracking down the books I want (as they are often long out of print) actually means I am spending quite a bit more than an ebook purchase for a recent new book for a secondhand book or an ebay lot with the book I want -and I don't particularly want the other books- and postage, which is often more than the book(s).
I just bought a Sara Seale from great Britain; and several Day Leclaires from BetterWorld with relatively cheap overseas postage @ $2.97 per book (otherwise postage is exorbidant from the US). Again it cost me more than a new harlequin off the shelves.
When I was a young student - quite a while ago
- I would search used book stores, charity shops , jumble sales etc to find the books I wanted. I was at one stage collecting the Abbey girl books by EJ Oxenham. It was extremely time consuming. I didn't mind then but I could use that time better now. I've only become internet savvy in the last 10 years and found it a much more efficient way to get the books I want.
Another benefit for the authors is that ebooks can't be forever passed around and they get more return for the enjoyment they are giving- though they may accrue a fan base through their older books.
[Although it seems most of the Sara Seales have been discarded (or kept as treasures) because there aren't many in circulation but she is no longer alive to benefit from royalties].
In the meantime I will keep blogging the paper books I am working my way through and will eventually get to read more of the ebooks that are unobtrusively stored in my computer. At least with the ebooks I don't have the dilemma of what to do with the books after I've finished reading them.

I forgot to mention that,
I forgot to mention that, of course, I also buy my books also through Harlequin's club (which is how I discovered eharlequin in the first place). I get a good mix that way, as well as the latest books (usually Mira and HQN). I agree, Lauren, that it's important for author's to get their royalties (my manuscript is being evaluated now for possible publication through SSE). However, most of the books I buy on ebay are often older ones, sometimes way back from the eighties even. And goodness only knows what assortments I've found at yard sales in the past few years! LOL
Right now, looking around my house, I see what you mean by you not having to worry about where you put your books. I have bookshelves everywhere in my house and they're crammed absolutely full!
I have definitely changed
I have definitely changed how I buy books over the years. I've not been a big library person for print books since I was in school, though I do like them for audio. I still buy print books more than ebooks but I do buy a lot of eBooks. And audio I've become addicted to so I buy quite a few of those, especially if they are on sale.
I still shop regularly at BN, mainly beacue my one book club meets there monthly so of course we all shop before or after the meeting, usually both. LOL
But the majority of my books are now online purchases through Amazon or eHQ. Though of course I want my free shipping so I buy more books than I may have planned to at one time to get free shipping.
And lately I had to make a promise to myself to buy less books since I don't really have the oney and I have a gazillion books waiting to be read. LOL I decided to set the rule that no buying books from authors I've not bought before unless the come with tons and tons of glowing reviews. Though audios I treat a little differently. I may do downloads of unkown to me authors since I have a subscription at Audible. But I'm trying to do anythign else form the libraris (especially now that they have the audio downloads so many places)
At eHQ I still buy whatever I want though because that extra 10% discount for being in the challenge makes a big difference and I feel like I'm saving money (though in actuality I'm probably not since it means I buy MORE books)

The way I buy books
Big changes. I used to do the B & M thing, then moved to used books when all the actual stores became chains and I could not get older releases. Then I was thrilled by Amazon because I could get back issues. Then I got fed up with Amazon and all the major sites in terms of used books because so many people who know nothing about books are selling books and only want to make a quick book. Now I do a lot of online shopping for time. If I need speed and want new, I use the major sites. If I want something more unque and eclectic or want to browse, I have a select group of small online sites run by friends usually or that I have used before and with whom I have had good experiences. I really miss looking at cool new bookstores and also eclectic used bookstores. Obviously buying books from Harlequin is a mahjor change since I only started reading romance recently.

Actually the internet has
Actually the internet has increased my library usage. Now that I can reserve and order books online, I find that I read a lot more authors that I use to hesitate before buying. Additionally, this review site and others have increased my awareness of other authors. I don't think I could even name all of the new authors I have tried over the past three years. I still order a lot from this site - love that discount - and some from B & M stores. I don't do much from Amazon or B & N online unless I can't find it elsewhere.
