I am ready to get into ebooks but I am not sure of what device to choose. I have looked into several devices myself and I still can't figure out what's the best one to get.
I want to be able to get books from this site and others as well so I guess that leaves The Kindle out. As far as I know you can only get ebooks on Amazon's web site or others linked with that web site. Unless it has changed since I checked on it, which was last year? Does anyone know the latest?
I am hoping that all you guys will help me out and offer your own opinion! What devices do you have and why? Or if you don't have one...what would you recommend and why?
In addition to being able to acess several sites for ebooks, I also want to be able to take the device around with me. Size of the screen is important...it needs to be big enough to read my ebook comfortably. An audio book added to the mix would be nice too. Another important aspect would be how many books the device could hold.
Please help me as I can't decide what will be best to get. Oh, I can spend a little extra to get what's best.

I'll get our Digital Guru Lorie over here with some suggestions for you Shelley. Did you check out the Digital Clinic that she ran online last week? She covered a LOT of ground there...

Dell Axim X51v
I love mine. It's a perfect ereader, and I can write on it, do email, etc as well. I bought it brand new out of the box on ebay for about $250, and if you can find one, I would highly recommend it. Even though Dell has discontinued them, they support discontinued products, and I really think the Axim is great (the X51v one model has a very nice screen and display, too.
If you use Mobi Pocket, you can change the color of the screen to make it easier to read, and you can change the size of the text etc). If you want to write with it, there are several infrared keyboards that work great. It's a mini-pc and I think far more flexible than most e-readers...

eReaders / Devices for eReading
Dedicated devices, as far as I know, all have the limitations that you're trying to avoid (limited choices in bookstores and books). I could be wrong. At any rate, here are 3 that I'm aware of, just so you can investigate them and discard them as "right" for you fully informed.
I've seen each of these readers and they all have nice "pluses" that the non-dedicated devices don't have (screen size, the "ink" in the cases of Kindle and Sony).
Non-Dedicated Devices (things like PDAs, Pocket PCs)
As a SAHM, I can't justify buying myself a Pocket PC, so I steal dh's Palm PDA. I have MobiPocket on it. The screen is smaller than my dream reader but as has been said, you can change the font size/color (can change background color, too). I think that I can/could buy something for the PDA that would make it audio-book compatible. I've never looked into it b/c we have 2 iPods (a shuffle and a Nano) plus a cheap MP3 player (talking US$10) and I like being able to slip them into a pocket or around my neck or clip them to me to listen to my books without worrying about breaking the screen. But for driving around or even walking around the neighborhood, it probably wouldn't matter.
Shewolf has a PPC -- I think an Axim. Vikki (v1978lp) bo't a used PPC or PDA last year. I think that they're both pleased with their choices.
If you buy used, be sure that there are no scratches on the screen. I've been told that it's beyond annoying and I know from just fingerprints on my screen that a scratch would be yukky.
While I love love love my mom's eBookwise when she's visiting (or I'm home) b/c of its screen size and other minor features, when I'm using the PDA, I'm fine with it. And I think that the newer models have larger screens. I know that at least one model does, b/c dh talked about buying it for me and I said not to just for my reading habit LOL.
Here are some blog entries I did in January:

So maybe that will help a bit, too.

I forgot to tell you how
I forgot to tell you how many books the devices hold. We bo't my mom's eBookwise and our PDA memory cards. I know that my mom's can now hold about 100 books. Not sure how many the PDA holds but when I expressed concern about how much memory my books (30-40) were taking on dh's PDA he did that noise and gesture that means "don't worry about it -- not even close to being a problem".
Which is another plus to MobiPocket tha someone pointed out last week -- those books take up less memory than the other two formats you can buy at the eBoutique. (If I understood correctly -- we're a Macintosh family, so that also limited our selections. What limited our selections were living on one income and our Macintosh computers.)
Phew, I think that's all, :)

I am so low tech.
I buy my ebooks from ereader.com and read them on my PC. The ereader is a free download and all my purchases are saved on their site so I delete the book when I am done. (You don't have to delete them of course, you can keep a bookshelf on your computer.)

Reading on the PC?
Hi Angelina - I like to read the whole book at once and be comfy! Doesn't it start to hurt your back sitting at your computer for so long?
I have to agree julz, I do
I have to agree julz, I do want to be comfy when reading my ebooks. I also want to take them with me wherever I go.
My search is still on...I didn't realize how hard this would be.
Thanks so much Penn, you have been a big help!!

Debating on this one myself.........
Shelley, I'd really like to get one but I just can't see myself spending that kind of money yet. Maybe in a few years or so. I'm not a big e-book person yet though so that's probably where the difference lies in me.
