IT HAPPENED IN TEXAS by Darlene Graham
T R O U B L E I N T E X A S
every morning since her husband's death, Marie Manning wakes up and assures herself that everything's fineJust fine. Her home is secure, her kids are brilliant, her pets precious and her friends plentiful.
Then Marie's world goes from safe to scary when a neighbours body turns up on her ranch. Suddenly all kinds of people -- including Sherriff Jim Whittington --have questions for Marie.
But Marie has questions of her own. What is Whittington keeping from her? And -- when it comes to the sherriff --should she believe the "evidence" or should she believe her heart?
"Sizzling Romance, chilling suspense, hankie-grabbing tenderness -- talented Darlene Graham dishes them all up in this great book. You won't put it down." ~~ Merline Lovelace ~~
Marie could feel the sherriff watching her. When she was far enough from the barn and well out of his view, she circled back through the woods and found a place where she could spy on him.
After a few minutes, he left the barn and walked to the trailer. Finally he came out and began walking straight in Marie's direction, moving fast, whistling louldly
Marie looked around her for a better hiding place. the whistling was getting louder In desparation, she climbed a gnarly old live oak.
To her horror Whittington came to a stop under the very tree where she hung precariously. He leaned against the trunk and fished a cigar out of his jean jacket. He seemed very relaxed, and continued to smoke for what seemed an eternityl Marie struggled to control her breathing in soundless little puffs.
Finally he coughed a short bark, and Marie almost slipped off her linb.
"Mrs. Manning,: he said quietly from uder his hat, "I think you can halp me. Want to come down?"
