Jeaniene Frost's Halfway to the Grave is a paranormal romance of the variety that will follow the same couple through several books. It was a lot of fun.
The cover copy informed me that Cat Crawfield was half-human, half-vampire. Do not let this turn you off! Cat is no superwoman. She has flaws that relate to actual aspects of her character, which should be a given, but often isn't. In particular, I liked that she was prejudiced against vampires without knowing much about them, logical given the circumstances of her birth.
The male vampire character, Bones, reminded me inextricably of Spike from Buffy: the Vampire Slayer in description and his British accent. His character and backstory is somewhat different, however, and I liked him. If he was a little too perfect, this is usual for vampire heroes. His dialogue was good, and he didn't annoy me, two major points in his favor.
I thought the main couple fell in love too fast, but that's my complaint about many, many romances. I liked the progress of the story, and the action plot, and the various problems that will provide plot for future novels in the series. I'll give the next book in the series a try.
