Just For Fun: How Many Published Romance Authors Have you Met in Person?

Hi All:

How many published romance authors have you meet in person and spoken to?

If you are an author yourself, please mention it in your post.

I have no idea what this post will reveal. I feel fortunate to have met ten romance authors in person. I was able to engage in at least a small conversation with each.

What has been your experience? You might mention where you live if you feel like it.

           Thanks,

                          Vince

Lots and Lots

Hi Vince,

I've met quite a few in my travels Embarassed and am lucky enough to call more than a few my friends. There's nothing quite like rubbing shoulders with people like Anne Gracie, Stephanie Laurens, Marion Lennox, Keri Arthur, Bron Jameison and Barb Hannay which I do most years at our annual RWAustralia conferences. I was also lucky enough to meet and have lunch with (twice) Jenny Cruise and Ann Stuart last year in Sydney, so I feel like my cup does runneth over.

The one thing about romance authors is that they are exceptionally friendly, down-to-earth and more than happy to meet their readers.

Who have you met?

Amy

Brisbane General Trilogy out Sept.
Sept -Top-Notch Surgeon, Pregnant Nurse.
Nov - Dr Romano's Christmas Baby.
Feb 09 - The Single Dad's New-Year Bride.

Do we count the people I've met at signings?

People who would recognize me, quite a few, I think, for a non-writer.

  • The 9 Texas-based Bombards (all wrote at least one Bombshell -- Evelyn Vaughn, Sharron McClellan, Cindy Dees, Katherine Garbera, Jenna Mills, Stephanie Feagan, Rachel Caine, Sandra K. Moore, Ellen Henderson)
  • Candace Havens (local author)
  • Lorraine Heath (local author)
  • Gerlyn ???? (local)
  • Olivia Gates (stayed with me after RWA)
  • Fiona Harper (dinner and PJ party at RWA)
  • Beth Cornelison (dinner and PJ party at RWA plus around here <g>)
  • Wayne Jordan (day before RWA)
  • Trish Wylie (PJ party at RWA plus last morning)
  • Michelle Willingham (PJ party at RWA)
  • Jenna Bayley-Burke (PJ party)

And the ones I've met briefly at signings include Cheri Adair, Marion Lennox (lovely lady), several others at the RWA ('07) Literacy Signing.  I know I'm forgetting some.

But on a regular basis, I do see the local authors and several readers (the core group started here in the eHQ Community but we've grown).

It's funny, but the ones who come here to the community on a regular or semi-regular basis I feel like I should have met!

Why the survey?

Not Many...

Because I haven't been to conferences yet, so probably fewer than a dozen.

But I am on my way to my first conference in April, NEC, and looking forward to meeting friends like Karen Foley and Karen Kendall, and going to lunches and chats with stars like Suzanne Brockmann and Susan Wiggs... I expect to see some familiar faces there, too, and really excited about it!

To be honest I don't think

To be honest I don't think I could even count since I've been to tons of book signings and I belong to three different book clubs, all of which meet up with authors quite regularly. Then there was the book group I belonged to before I moved to TX which was made up of a lot of local authors. I'd say I've probably met and talked to at least 100, some of which I've met up with several times. A lot of those were brief conversations at book signings, but a lot were longer than that. And yes, that's just the romance authors. Wink I've even met Diana Gabaldon and Kristin Hannah, which were quite exciting at the time.

Romance authors are some of the friendliest most fan appreciative and down to earth authors out there. I'd never even dream of trying to meet some of those huge big name authors out there in other genres. But I never am shy about meeting the romance authors. Though I was a little nervous meeting a few of them for the first time because they are just SO popular.

Hmmm, well I'm definitely in the...

"not met any authors in person" camp.  I think some of it may have to do with being in Canada ~ not too many author jaunts up here in Edmonton.
But I think it's fascinating to even be able to "meet" online.  Either way, it's a real treat when someone whose work I admire and enjoy immensely returns an email... I mean, these are busy people!  Laughing

Kalyko,

Donna Alward is a local author for you.  And then Canadian but probably not so local are also Cara Colter (Coulter? sp?) and ummmm oh a SuperRomance writer cannot think of her name right now . . .  and Loreth Anne White (SRS), too.  I'm thinking there's one or two more, just in the Harlequin house. Oh, and Michelle Rowen, who writes for Warner.  I've met her b/c for the last few years she and one of my friends have been CPs and RWA roomies.  She's great.

Oh, look what I found when I googled "Canadian Romance Authors"

http://www.canadianromanceauthors.com/

So, now I expect you to find some local to you!  And then let us know.  I'm sure they're at least as friendly as their American counterparts.

How many?

A lot more since I sold my first book.  In my area alone are Vivi Anna, CJ Carmichael, Pam Yaye of HQ.

I met Brenda Novak last fall and she is lovely and SO energetic!

But the big thrill was traveling to London last fall and finally meeting so many of the Mills and Boon authors I had "met" online.  The first one I met was Trish Wylie, then Michelle Styles, my critique partner.  Followed by Kate Hardy, and the at the luncheon I know I couldn't possibly name everyone.  A whole ROOMFUL of other authors.  It was quite something.  I also got hugged and "adopted" by Kate Walker, bought tights in Selfridges with India Grey and Abby Green, and went to dinner with Anna Louise Lucia, Natasha Oakley, Fiona Harper, Julie Cohen, and OMG I know I'm forgetting people.

It is right up there as one of the most amazing days of my life.

Penn...

and I must have cross posted!  Kalyko, you should come down with Donna H sometime and we'll do coffee.  :-)  And I hope we're going to do a group signing when we have our next workshop, because the last one was a lot of fun.

CJ, Vivi and I are doing a signing a week from today at the library downtown, though it's a bit of a drive for you for an evening.

You're right of course!

And Donna, I did see you in I Am Canadian, and DonnaH mentioned to me that you're in Calgary... and I think that's terrific that you do signings and the like... and I'll say right now that if you ever have one on a weekend or something I'll do my darnedest to get down there.  That would be so much fun!

Naming Names for Fun

Hi Amy:

These are the ten authors that I have met in person and was able to talk to:

Margaret Daley,  Marilyn Pappano, Darlene Graham, Linda Goodnight, Curtiss Ann Matlock, Dorothy Garlock, Gloria Harchar, Sharon Ervin,  P.C. Cast, Peggy Fielding.

I think signings should count -- if you want to count them.

All these writers were in Tulsa.

Now mainstream authors I’ve met in person from anywhere:

Irving Stone, 1 minute before his wife shooed me away – all fans were being shooed away.

Louis L’Amour, 45 seconds before his wife shooed me away – all fans were being shooed away.

William Bernhardt, very quite man, didn’t interact with people that I could see, no shooing away.

Yevgeny Yevtushenko, world class Russian poet, fans sat down on sofas in book store and talked away the full time of the signing. People loved him.  He signed books while sitting on the sofa.

You can see that romance authors are very approachable and friendly. I don’t think you can be a good romance writer and not be a nice person who people would like. How could you convincingly write about love, happy endings, what’s best in others, and overcoming adversity while being an anti-social recluse?  I don’t think it is possible.   Romance fans are very fortunate in the authors they have.

Thanks,

Vince

Now, if we were to have a wishlist...

I was looking at your list, Vince, and thinking what authors I would love to meet, ideally if I had some chance to really talk with them (not a room with a hundred people where you only exchange hellos for 3 seconds) and those would be Harlan Coben and Charlaine Harris. And Sue Grafton -- oh, and Lisa Scottline. And JoAnn Ross. And... LOL... well, it gets to be a pretty long wishlist, but I hope I will trip across all of their paths at one point or another...

The only authors I have met

The only authors I have met are my professors and colleagues from graduate school.  I hate crowds so book signings and conferences are NOT my thing.  In fact, the author of a book of historical fiction I reviewed is planning to come here and wants to meet me.  I really dread all the hooplah over celebrity stuff and would rather spend the time reading and reviewing her next book than the schmooze thing.  On the other hand, I loved her book and want to welcome her to area so I will show up to show support. I am sure I will have a blast if she comes but I am a natural introvert.  Teaching forced me to develop an extroverted side and I do enjoy meeting new people like with ham radio but my natural inclination is away from crowds and towards solitary things like reading.  Socially I like small groups over crowds.

Not All Signings Are Big

Hi Paisley:

Not all signings are big or crowded. I've often been to signing where there was only one to two people at a time.  The author was very happy to have someone to talk to. These are very worth going to. It is also easy to talk to a few strangers because of your common interest in the author's works. Look for signings that not advertised very much if at all. Sometimes the only notice is a poster in the bookstore and a free notice in the newspaper. You might give it a try and see what happens. I've enjoyed all the romance signings I've been to.

     Thanks,

 Hi Sam:

 Hi Sam:

Sue Grafton, Lisa Scottoline, plus Linda Fairstein would be my choices as well.

                  Thanks,

I am not sure..

if they count as romance novels....

I met Jackie Collins at a book signing for "Lovers and Players".

Also, Candice Bushnell at a booksigning for "Lipstick Jungle" (soon to be a tv series).

They were both at my local Barnes and Noble. They gave a little talk, and did a book signing.

I found them both, very nice...especially Jackie...she took time with each person, taking pictures and chatting with each person.

Terri
Got Books?

Terri - you met someone who

Terri - you met someone who has a tv show based on her books. I met someone who was in a TV show and her book was based on that (fictionally) Too funny. I saw Finola Hughes a couple years ago at a signing and reading for her book Soapsuds. I never read the book (didn't even buy it) and have never seen the soap opera she's in so I don't watch any of them. The whole reason I went? Becasue of Charmed. I LOVED that show and I loved her character, even if she was a ghost in the series. I waited in line to talk to her and when I got up there I was quite honest. Told her the real reason I wanted to meet her was because of Charmed. She was a little taken aback I think but she appreciated it and we chatted a couple minutes about Charmed.

We love Penn

Penn became the entertainment director for the Mills & Boon crowd at RWA last year. I remember she came to have dinner with Fiona when she got into town before the rest of us, met up with Trish after conference...and didn't Olivia stay with you?

I told them all Americans are as amazing as Penn...they laughed...but it was so nice to have someone so warm and welcoming in a strange city :)
