Just for Merri - Sadhbh's January summary with links

to all 70 blogs. Merri half asked for something like this, so I decided to give it a try. The good news will be if she likes it. The bad news is that it takes about two hours to do seventy books - I could have read two good books in that time, so is it worth the effort? You tell me!

Oh

Merri thinks it would be good because I'm such a -

shall we say - proliferous - reader that it would make things easier for people to find old blogs when they eventually get around to reading the same books as me, or if I eventually get around to reading the same books as them Laughing

So I did a little test

time consuming Undecided painful on weary shoulders, but I might get to it tomorrow at some stage

once I know I want to do it, I can prepare the summary with the links each month, but going back and forth between the blog to get the links is time consuming when there are 286 blogs in the backlist

I think I'm going to go to bed with a book

OMG, I can't believe you

OMG, I can't believe you did that! However, it is very useful because I joined in the beginning of February and you had already read, what 70 books? I've spotted a few that I have wanted to know something about and now I have an easy way to find them. Wink

I love it!  Sadhbh, this

I love it!  Sadhbh, this is great and I marked it as favorites so I can read them at my own pace.  You know, I really miss how we saw more blogs in last year's challenge.  I think it would really be cool if every time we posted a book review, the title went into a table of contents automatically with links on our profile page.  I would be so much more interested in this than What's We're Reading (Actually would like both...maybe a table on contents on the right?)  Even if it took the tech people a while, i think it would be the single most important thing I would most like to see.  With you, it's a necessity but I also think it would be great for everyone.  What do you and everyone else thing.

AKA Merri
Family Challenge Team: The Spine Breakers with my dh Glenn AKA Phaedrus

BUT I'd just as soon she read and the search engine here is nice. So you could search by title or author and yes, you'll get more than Sadhbh's entries as hits but is that really a bad thing?

Plus, if you search by author and they've had enough entries to be in the tags summary, you can just click on him/her in the tags and up all the book reviews on their books pop. Two clicks: "more" tags and then click on the author.

I love it Sadhbh but let people search in the search and/or tags fields. You stick to reading and book reviewing.

Penn

THe search engine is OK and

THe search engine is OK and I would rather her read and have fun ...but  if the techies can do it on the profile page automatically with programming, it would be super cool!!!  Smile  The search engine is fine but what I really miss this year is the feeling I get for the blogger which seems lost in the massive quantity of everything this year.  I like seeing the more of the bloggers, not just searching for books.

AKA Merri

of "titles" to the blogs/reviews. But I still don't want Sadhbh spending the hours and hours it would take to make her own TOC.

Penn

I wouldn't know how to make a TOC

but I can do the monthly summaries with links - in fact (cutting
down on sleep a little) it's prepared, and "only" cost me about three
books, which I can probably make up by the end of the year (or the day,
depending on the monsters Wink)

Penni
- I'm LOL a little at your reaction, not wanting me to cut down on
reading or blogging. Could this possibly be because (having met me) you
know the dangers to my entourage from book withdrawal Embarassed Wink

Merri, with all due respect,

Merri, with all due respect, I would like the techies to solve the bouncing back to the top problem and the coming in at the last post read problem for the threads that have multiple pages BEFORE going on to finetune the site.  I get the impression that this has been forgotten.

My humble opinion...

Those links are nice but I don't think Sadhbh needs to be doing more for us.  Use the search engine that eHarlequin has to find what you want.  Sadhbh has a family, a job & loves to read, why should she be doing more for us.  We should do more for her! Smile

Sadhbh I really appreciate that you do a summary at the end of every month it doesn't seem fair to ask you to do even more.  I love that you are Captain of our Dream Team & do such a wonderful job but I think others can use their own time instead of yours.  If there is something I could do to help you I would be happy to do it.

Happy Wednesday! Smile

Take care, happy reading,

Donna - I think I was so tired I was punchy

it took me about five hours to do the 286 blogs which is about as good as it's ever going to get for that kind of numbers

Thanks for the support, you're a great team cheerleader

what I really said and thought

I did NOT say that Sadhbh needed to do more. You know, everyone wants people to read their blogs and have friends. It was really fun for me to finally be able to comment on Sadhbh's blogs because we had read the same books. I like Sadhbh a lot so it was, I felt, a very nice exchange between us and my comments were made out of friendship and appreciation for her....and something the two of us share...a love of books. If the techies were able to do this, Sadhbh and all of us might getting a lot more "community" out of the community because we all read at different paces.

I understand everyone's wanting to encourage Sadhbh to do what she loves to do...but I did not say she should do this. I had the opportunity to read lots of pages of her blog which was wonderful. Maybe she noticed and tried to do this because she saw this and did it out of friendship. She did something and it was really neat for me as someone who likes to read her blogs even if I can't keep up with her. It might be a good idea, not for her to do, but for the techies to find a fast way to do this for us all this year or next. Quite frankly, just because she does something once doesn't mean she has to do it forever or even twice. But I wish maybe people would credit her with coming up with a neat idea rather than getting upset about it.

Yes, it would be nice to have them fix the page bug... it's annoying. Still, a change that fosters more community and more book exposure seems to be a good thing. I am sorry if I seem huffy, but I really like Sadhbh and I think everyone jumped onto this not understanding the context...and probably would not unless they read our dialogue as a separate blog. Should she do it every month...no, she should do what she loves. Please give her credit too. After all, it was though the hassle of counting books that this year we now have an automatic counter.

The search engine does not capture all things. I have missed several blogs using it for specfic books.

As someone who has just

As someone who has just joined this year, I have no basis of comperison, but it seems to me that it is very hard for the newbie to find their way around initially. I also felt very hard to find my way back to something. I can't imagine being one of the IT geeks that has to make this whole thing work. There are some bugs that have been here since I started in February and mid April there is still no solution. But along with correcting the page problems it would be nice to click on someone's home page and find their blog--if it's there I haven't found it.Frown Not just their most recent blog entry--but the whole blog.

and any one else finding this site hard to maneuver ... here's a blog I made back in January

Nancy, if you go to a person's Profile Page

and scroll down to their "most recent blog posts" and then click on more, you do get all their blogs. I just clicked on "last" on my own and it does go back to my first post on January 8th (and is on the 8th page but naturally that will change as I add more).

I actually have my favorite people bookmarked at their blog page and about once a week, I go in and check up on everyone. That works better for me right now than monitoring "my friends" or doing RSS feeds.

FWIW,

Penn

Hey Merri - you didn't force me into doing this

sorry if people criticised you for that, I certainly got your post in the way you meant and that's why I responded

and yes Penni was right when she said you can access a person's entire blog in two or three clicks via their name BUT

I have more than thirty pages of blog entries so it's not just three clicks

which
is why the monthly summary post with links is a VERY good idea to help
Merri (or anyone else interested in my books read) find specific posts
for a friend who reads as prolifically as I do

blogging takes brain energy, those summaries just took time, let's not confuse the two Wink

LOL Sadhbh, Time vs brain cells . . .

Time vs brain cells . . . I forget people with wireless at home can sit on their beautiful back porch and enjoy the view up their hill while the sun sets and make TOCs/Links of their blog entries. :) Or in my case, if we ever get the wireless router bought, I'll be able to watch TV with my little ones and be on eHQ . . .

I did NOT interpret your index/link to be something that Merri had asked you to do and as I know you I know that you wouldn't have if you hadn't wanted to. I was just voting that you read instead but hey, if you enjoyed it (and despite appearances to the contrary in my home, I enjoy order so I would enjoy it, too, given the time to do it), well go for it!

It IS a nice feature and I forget just how many pages you have . . .

I think that it would be a good idea if we COULD have a TOC for each blogger and now that I think of it, most if not all of the few blogs I visit outside of eHQ do have a type of TOC off to the side with even "archives". Who's going to ask Jayne for something like that? It might be something easy for the techhies to set up. Yes, I want some things fixed but if we don't ask, it won't get on their "to-do" list.

Penn

FWIW, I didn't intend to

FWIW, I didn't intend to target Merri for My Dearest Gnat's linkage frenzy.  She does things like that all by herself.  But I do think that the bugs should be taken care of before adding more bells an whistles.  I have seen a huge drop off in posting in the other forum threads because of them.Cool

solving that problem has been a lot more complicated than it
sounded, but I don't think the techies have the option of forgetting
it. Jayne also mentioned having given them the second wishlist so I'm
hopeful we'll see things pretty soon

Remember the last time the
kinks also took several months to work out, we've just forgotten that,
and the techies didn't have the Challenge to work with at the same time

Merri
- I'm sorry you got the backlash, I certainly didn't feel you'd given
me "orders". I started doing it just to see how long it would take, I'm
actually LOL at Penni's idea that I did this by wireless out on the
terrace with a view of my hill, because the truth is more that I did it
hunched over the wired computer beside the aquarium and the treadmill,
between eight forty and eleven p.m. and between six a.m. and
eight-thirty a.m. while getting the boys up and out the door, but the
touchtyping and the Ctrl C, Ctrl V expertise from work meant that it
went quite quickly

So I'm a perfectionist maniac readaholic, tough! Get used to it Wink

Overachiever? Me Innocent

Not yet! Laughing

Which reminds me that I was supposed to be getting my blog doc up to date but I got distracted

Whoops!

Merri, I am sorry it sounded like I was picking on you.  If Sadhbh had not wanted to do the summary she wouldn't have.  Can't you access all her blogs by going to the Dream Team tag?  I'm just wondering why it is hard to access her posts.  I'm sure my brain didn't digest something I read in the discussion.  It was not my intention to offend you or anyone else.  Like you I sincerely like Sadhbh, consider her a friend.  It just seems like she has so much on her plate & as a mom I can relate to how little time there is to do what you enjoy most.  When my children were small I didn't work outside the home.  Sadhbh is amazing, I don't know how she does everything she does & reads as much.  I love her reviews & blogs. Smile  Oh yea, her smart agile brain also!  I miss more discussion blogs like we used to see on the Challenge last year.  There are some & may be more but I haven't been hunting for them!

eHarlequin is such a great community.  Thanks to everyone here & the hosts & techies.  How did I ever manage without all these great discussions!!

Take care, happy reading,

Use your tags!

I have a suggestion and I've been REALLY bad and haven't read the messages posted after Sadhbh's blog. BUT, if she had tagged EACH of her reviews with her name in addition to the Dream Team, then all she had to do is click on the tag to pull up the entire list of everything she'd reviewed....just sayin'

Here I'll give you an example from just tagging a couple of her reviews. But I have to ask Sadhbh a question, HOW are you managing to get away with not filling in the author names in the review template? You shouldn't even be able to file a review with that field left blank....were these the reviews you created before I had the author field added to the input?

Oh and I did go back and read up the list of posts here, and I'm happy to say that Scott is working on the build for a comprehensive list of all the bloggers on the site.  It will sit on the Blog landing page in addition to some other content I've dreamed up to make that page more interesting.....it's pretty static now...if you ask me (NOT one of my better days)

Not forgotten at all

I'm reading backwards and catching upLaughing  FF, please don't think that we've forgotten about being bounced to the top of a thread instead of going to the last chronological post as a priority.  I almost pulled the project and switched vendors/platform at the last minute over this. I truly agonized over it.  But it's just not an easy fix and something we're going to have to wait on until the next version of this platform is built.  I know it seems awful after the way the old boards worked, but really I think that was the ONLY thing the old boards had going for them...ok, that and the numbered posts.  Tongue out

I think it's been explained in several spots, but you must have somehow missed the messaging around it.

Sadhbh and all

Everyone, I just wanted to keep telling people what I said because I felt there was not some kind of connection happening... I just wanted to explain to everyone that they were missing the context of something very nice that Sadhbh did for me. I love reading her blogs and whenever there is time for bells and whistles, it would be cool to have a TOC. It's a long story but the less flipping through pages I have to do, the better as compared to pressing on links. I am very near-sighted and I work all day on the computer. When I flip pages a lot, I get big headaches and even a bit dizzy. I don't want to go on about my weird eyes...it gets embarrassing to have to keep describing all this but. But the main thing is that there several things that Sadhbh knew that no one else did because they were interchanges between our blogs and comments. I found a lot of pages where Sadhbh and I had read the same books and it was really cool to be able tom make comments and read her blogs after I read the books! A lot of times I read blogs but if I haven't read the book, it's hard to even let someone know I am reading their blog other than to say something like "I have this one". And of course no one can catch up to Sadhbh's reading so it's really nice to go back into her blogs. Anyhow.... we all like to know someone is reading our blogs, you know? Too long a story but I really like reading Sadhbh's blogs and an automated TOC would really be nice someday---and then none of would need take up reading tine to have one. I have bookmarked the summaries she made so i can read them at my own pace. Smile and navigate more easily.

I just felt the need to keep on saying what I was saying because I felt we were all talking across each other and I knew no one probably saw the nice interchanges Sadhbh and I were having in other places.

Yes, what I'm suggesting is that when you create your book reviews, you simply add your community ID/Name to the tag list.  That way you create a quick and easy way to create a link to all your entries for reference.
