Karma Girl by Jennifer Estep

The comic books meet romance novels here in Jennifer Estep's rolicking debut.  Ace reporter Carmen Cole has devoted herself to unmasking the world's superheroes after a certain spandex-wearer fiancee and former best friend were caught in each other's arms on Carmen's wedding day.  And Carmen is very good at her job.  So good that she lands a gig with the biggest newspaper in the country where she covers the society beat and continues her vendetta exposing the superheroes and ubervillians of Bigtime, NY.

But her job isn't without trouble.  Her latest unmasking led to Tornado Teague's suicide, and Carmen's activities bring her smack dab in the middle of a super-war between The Fearless Five and ubervillians the Triad.  The evil-doers demand she deliver the identity of the leader of the Fearless Five or she'll be used as part of ubervillian Frost's nefarious experiments with radioactive goo.  Can the Fearless Five save her?  Would they want to after what she's done to their friend?  How will she escape all the bad Karma in her life?  And can she fight her incredible attraction to Fearless Five leader Striker long enough to save all their lives?

Estep proves to be a master at this style of campy, over-the-top delicious comic romance.  Her quick-witted tongue-in-cheek style is hysterical, but she also managed to weave an engaging mystery (though like Superman and Clark Kent, the identities of the heroes and villans are wonderfully obvious to the reader) with surprisingly powerful emotional turning points.  And who knew superheroes could be so sexy?  Fun, fun, fun!

Comic books are a bit outside my usual reading comfort zone, though I guess you could equate my beloved pro wrestlers with modern day superheroes.  Well at least they do prove the potential yumminess of spandex, lol.  But I thoroughly enjoyed this read and look forward to getting my hands on the next book in the series.

Superhero style..

I loved this book... but I've also enjoyed comics and all sorts of superhero books and movies over the years.  I love the way Jennifer Estep mixed a really good romance with the whole campy feeling of the superhero world.  And I loved book 2, HOT MAMA, as well!  Great reads!

I haven't read this book yet, and missed the opportunity to meet this author this past summer, but my friends were kind enough to pick me up a copy of Karma Girl and get it autographed.  I already have the second in the series in my TBR(just based on comments I've heard from fellow readers) and have wish listed the next book.

I think you will enjoy this book.  I know you don't read much of the paranormal and I'm guessing superheroes fall in the paranormal category.  But I think this one has a lot of the elements that you like in a book.
