King Crab, Chocolate, and Other Necessities

Blackout at Christmas cover.jpg

King crab dipped in real butter is better than chocolate for me! And I can already hear the uproar.

I’ve never had much of a sweet tooth. I’m more of a bitter girl...no, not really. I do like chocolate and eat it on rare occasions. Dark chocolate is good for your heart, too. But crab and butter...mmm hmmm!! Ok, so that’s not my blog today. I just read Linda’s blog and had to stir the pot a little :o) Linda, your blog was great. If I had to pick my favorite kind of chocolate, I’d go with Norwegian, since the guys who manage our satellite ground stations (day job) never remember I hardly ever eat chocolate and bring some back when they go to our Norway ground station. It is pretty good, have to admit.

But on to the serious business of writing romance. I’m between projects right now and can’t decide what to work on next. Contemporary? Suspense? Paranormal? Another SRS novel? What’s my fancy? I like to mix it up, so I’m leaning toward contemporary. I figure I’ve got time before my next SRS is due. So why not have some fun?  I’ve been browsing news headlines to drum up some ideas. The new healthcare plan doesn’t strike me as very exciting. Frustrating, more like it. Energy consuming TVs...? Not so much. Iran? Ew. Undercover agent after an online identity theft group? Kinda like that one. A senator’s daughter and her pending DUI? That might have some possibilities, too. Don’t want to make my heroine too reckless and stupid, though.

What to do, what to do.

Do you ever decide the structure of your story before you dream up a plot? About the only thing I know about what I’m going to write is I want my hero to be alpha (of course) and my heroine to annoy the crap out of him. Sounds like true love to me ;o)

Jennifer,

I don't eat any kind of seafood other than mild, white fish (like Cod and some others) and tuna as in tuna salad.  I don't usually like salmon, but I have tasted a grilled salmon steak that I thought was okay.  Most fish and other seafood is way too "fishy" to suit me.  So, aside from chocolate, give me a good steak and baked potato or a lasagna or something to make me sigh.  Even a really good burger will please me.

I like your online identity theft group idea.  However, if you use that, you really, really have to include a poorly written and spelled letter from someone in Africa who is congratulating the recipient on inheriting a fortune from a long-lost relative (of which s/he has none in Africa) or who is informing the recipient that s/he won a lottery for which s/he never bought a ticket or who works for some million/billionaire who needs help getting himself and his money safely out of a war-torn country and who will be willing to share that fortune generously with one of your characters for helping him, even though no one can ever explain how they got the information that the recipient is a good Christian person with strong ethics who might be willing to help (read: incredibly gullible).  I am always amazed that anyone actually responds to these emails!  But a friend of mine got one of the lottery kind and sent it to me asking if I thought it was legit.  (Uh, no!  Did you buy a lottery ticket in Africa?  If not, how could you have won?)  And apparently hundreds of people do believe in these things.

I don't do seafood

I am not a seafood eater, so bring on the chocolate. I ate some crab salad by mistake one day at a buffet and I thought I was going to wretch.

Linda Henderson

just sticking my head out of deadline h**l

and read your blog, sweetie.  Crab in drawn butter is fabulous.  You can invite me over for some anytime!  And dark chocolate is about all I eat these days.  I swear it's medicinal.  My doctor prescribed it!

I am so swamped in plots of my own right now that I can't help you with yours.  Wish I could.  I love plotting!  I'm thinking a lot about soldiers at the moment as I'm helping put together care packages headed for Afghanistan for Christmas.  Soldiers are always good alpha heroes.  Where's the setting?  Sometimes when I'm stuck, I think about where in the world I would like to set my story.  That leads to plots and characters.  Got any place in mind?

Good luck with it!  I'll check back with you after the next two deadlines and if you still need help, I'm there!
