March Challenge: New to me author and genre. My sister gave me this book to read. I probably wouldn't have ever picked it up for myself. It's both a contemporary and historical romance.
My Thoughts: I don't usually read historicals.
But I really enjoyed it. In fact, I think it was an excellent story. Maybe even my favorite book so far this year.
The storyline was genius IMO. Considering the book was first published in 1989, it's easy to see how this book may have influenced movies made during the 90s.--H comes from the past to help h in the present. But that isn't his only mission; H must discover the wrong from the past to prevent his execution and right history, with h's help of course. After H returns to his time and history hasn't changed, the h travels to the past to right history. Then h returns to her time alone.
The descriptions were so vivid that I had no problem picturing the settings in both times--today and 16th century. I loved the characters. And the whole star-crossed lovers that can't have their forever was heart-wrenching. But I loved the twist JD worked in that implies an impending HEA in anyway.
Synopsis: Since I don't think I can do the recap justice, Im just going to tease you with an introduction.
Dougless Montgomery thought the trip to England was suppose to be a romantic vacation. She also thought the big surprise her boyfriend had been hinting at was a proposal of marriage. Afterall, she had seen the jewelry store receipt.
She was flabbergasted when her surprise was Gloria--Robert's 13 yr old daughter--joining them and she was expected to pay for half the total trip. But she would deal with it as long as it meant marrying the man she loved. At least that was the plan until Robert presented Gloria with a $5000 bracelet.
The next day, after a misunderstanding between Gloria and Dougless, Robert leaves Dougless stranded at the historic church in Ashburton. Since Gloria took Dougless's purse, she's left penniless as well. Crying and praying for a knight in shining armor, Nicholas Stafford, a 16th century Earl, appears. And so the story begins...

My sister bought 2 more after she read this one. (JD was a new author for her as well.) She said she didn't care for either of them as much.
