The Kommandant's Girl

The PW review calls this a riveting historical romance. I don't know who the reviewer was, but The Kommandant's Girl is no romance. It's not even romantic. But it is a wonderful character driven story I absolutely loved until the last three chapters. Even though I didn't like the last three chapters, I'll still pick up the next book in the series just to see what happens AND because of Jenoff's story-telling skills.

TKG is a story set in war-time Poland about a girl who has to make impossible choices. There is no real resolution of the story though, so if you like your ends tied up, you might want to wait for the next book in the series. The ends that are tied up left me wishing for somethign more. Something meatier, I guess, like Jenoff delivered in the rest of this amazing book.

One last thing: the entire time I read this book I thought it would make a great movie. The adventure and suspense aspects kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page.

I highly recommend this book, with reservation. If you're a reader who likes a book to end with a sense of HEA or even HEA eventually, you'll want to wait. If you don't mind what my husband calls the "gets on the bus and rides away" indpenedent film type end, you'll love this book. If you're looking for a great WW2 romance, this isn't it. But if you've been waiting for a great World War 2 story, and romance isn't your primary focus, you'll probably love this book. I did.

What is a PW review?

What is a PW review? Publisher's Weekly?  I have this in my TBR and am excited to see a blog on it.  I don't care if there is an HEA although it's nice to know it's fiction and not a romance to keep my expectations in check.

An HEA seems to be a very important aspect to the romance genre identification although some times authors shift the genre boundaries some and I enjoy that.  Sometimes I wonder if some reviewers ever read the book other than a skim here and there.  Sometimes these big review groups are right on but other times do they ever get it wrong.

I agree about the big

I agree about the big review groups, Paisley. PW is Publisher's Weekly. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. :-) I'm looking forward to the next.
