To Love and To Cherish by Jennie Adams
Harlequin Romance #4013 – March 2008
Heart to Heart theme
.
.
Tiffany Campbell blew it with her best friend a year ago. She practically threw herself at him, and then it became painfully obvious he hadn’t felt the same way. She was sure that’s why he took the job in Europe for the past year, to put distance between them. A little bit of Jack Reid’s heart had been given to Tiffany the day she threatened to call the police when Jack’s dad was about to horse whip him when they were kids. They were best friends. But dreadful news and the sudden urge to be violent himself, told Jack that any relationship with Tiffany beyond friendship was out. Back in Australia, it’s time to get his best friend back. What better way to do that than to jump right in when a farm hand breaks his leg, and leaves Tiffany in a bind while her adoptive parents are away on holiday. Working the goat farm and the cheesery together should give them the bonding they need to reaffirm that friendship. Only how is that going to work when Tiffany still has those other feelings and Jack’s giving mixed signals; he wants her, he doesn’t want her. Tiffany is sure there’s much more. Jack isn’t the same Jack that went away.
You’ll need a tissue box for this one! This book definitely reaches from the author’s heart to the reader’s heart. There are so many elements to this book, so many layers to the characters; and Ms. Adams weaves them all magically together. Jack is in a hard place; in denial over the emotional effects of his illness, and the desperate need to keep that part away from Tiffany. Not realizing until it’s almost too late that he’s being unfair to her, he’s failing to trust her. Tiffany has her own hang-ups from a painful childhood; so she’s always trying too hard to do everything right for the people who matter to her. There’s lots of angst in this one – confusion, pain of rejection, feelings of not being worthy, and yet the heart clings to the tiniest glimmers of hope. And while we reach for the tissues, we get some truly wonderful scenes with Almathea the goat who seems to know just when to provide some mischief to bring us some smiles. And this farmer’s daughter, enjoyed the goat farming / cheesery background very much. This is my first book read by Ms. Adams, and it will certainly not be the last!

Jack Reid – tall, deep blue eyes, gorgeously built … though misguided he wants more than anything to spare Tiffany pain, to protect her … with all his angst, I think I’d take him! … they did a great job on the cover I think .. the cover model looks the sensitive strong type that Jack is … hmmmm, to cast him? … Josh Lucas comes to mind

Sounds awesome...
I don't know how I missed this one with my monthly orders. It sounds great. I'll have to put it on my list for next month.
Great review!

Casting Jack .....
This was another tough one to cast ... perhaps as the cover model actually suited Jack ....
Josh Lucas played the character of Jake Perry in the movie Sweet Home Alabama ... he was estranged from his wife and highschool sweetheart, played by Reese Witherspoon, who had gone off to New York in pursuit of a career in designing ... Jake had always felt that he couldn't give his wife the life she deserved ... when he built a life that he felt was worthy, he went to New York to bring her home ... only when he seen her from afar and seen how happy she seemed, he couldn't do it .....
Jack Reid loves Tiffany so much he's prepared to do anything to save her pain ..... only he doesn't realize that by not sharing his own pain with her, he's selling her short .... it's almost too late when Jack realizes he can't stop Tiffany from being more than his best friend

Hi KaterineT: I agree
Hi KaterineT:
I agree that To Love and To Cherish is an excellent book but it is very emotional and some readers may find it difficult. You brought this out very well in your review. Good news. If you liked “To Love and To Cherish” I believe you’ll like, “Memo: Marry Me” and “Parents of Convenience” even more. I know I did. Jennie Adams is both talented and substantial. (Her writing is very rich.)
Thanks,
Vince

To Love and To Cherish
Katherine, I'm so pleased you enjoyed To Love and To Cherish. I enjoyed revisiting my farm-girl roots for the setting of this story - and I really enjoyed your hero rating. I'd forgotten we're supposed to do that with this month's reviews. Must remember it with my upcoming reviews!
Kel, Kalyko and Claire, I hope you enjoy the book when you get to it, and Vince, again, thank you for your feedback about my books. As a side-note, it's a particular thrill to hear from someone who enjoyed Parents of Convenience. Because it was one of my first and the website details didn't appear in it, it rather felt like sending it into outer space and I wondered what readers had felt about it. Really, really nice to hear from someone who enjoyed reading about Max and Phoebe.
Vince is right about the book being a tough read for some people. I knew that when I wrote it. It was hard to write, as well. The issues that touched Jack's life, in a general sense and in some cases very literally, are ones that have touched most of us in one way or another and they raise strong emotional reactions. I hope they also bring a sense of encouragement and the feeling of not being alone.
Love and hugs

Heart to Heart .......
Kel, Kathy and Claire ... I know you're going to enjoy this one .... Jack and Tiffany are heartwarming characters that you really can't help but route for
Hi Vince .. how nice to have you pop in ... yes, you're right ... this one is very emotional and covers some pretty weighty issues ..... I've found to expect that from any of the books branded with the Heart to Heart theme ... and thanks for the recommendations, I have Memo: Marry Me, but alas, I missed out on Parents of Convenience .... and I'll have to check the UBS for The Italian Dad, not sure how I missed getting that one, but I did .... and that one's high on my list of wishes
Jennie .... it's most evident that this book was written from your heart .... thank you for sharing Tiffany and Jack with us ... they are a great couple and ones I hope you let us visit again from time to time .... I really enjoy your style ... your scenes with Almathea were truly delightful, I could see her "goddess" glare and smiled too .... I'm curious, you were to cast Jack, who would you pick?

Casting Jack Reid
Hi Katherine,
When I was writing To Love and To Cherish I had a broody picture of Keanu Reeves, and still of a couple out of a movie (not sure what one, I found it googling for images). The couple were standing in a kitchen and he had his hands very tenderly cupping her face. What I imagined might be the emotions behind the expressions was what drew me to those pictures for Jack's character.
Jack is the man on the street whose voice turned my head, the kiss Keanu Reeves's character gave Sandra Bullock's character in Speed when they finally escaped the bus on that trolley. He's the particular brand of affection and friendship I've only ever shared with one man.
I guess I go looking for emotional impact when I'm casting characters and I pretty much can't use pictures that remind me of a particular movie. Well, to date that's how it's been. Writing is a fluid thing so maybe I'll find myself doing that in the future.
Thanks for a thought-provoking question. I'd be very interested to hear what others have to say about this part of the writing process.

Casting the hero ....
Hi Jennie ..... yes, Keanu Reeves came to mind for me as well ..... I was seeing scenes of him in that movie "Sweet November" with Charese Theron (I think your kitchen pic would be from this movie, excellent movie) ... a particular scene at the beginning of the movie where he denies he needs her help ... that look of disbelief that she sees inside him ... I kept thinking Jack would have that look in his eyes when Tiffany first says to him "you're different"
and yes, I do understand about a particular photo drawing you ... if I were to seriously look for a "hero" I would do it the same ... disregard a movie role and go for that one look, that one emotional connection and then build around that .... I think if you were to go by the actual role the hero was playing, you might take more of the movie character than you would intend ..... so going with a "photo" and expanding makes total sense
I recently read a HP and I kept seeing Christian Bale's face as the hero .... now he's played so many bizarre roles, some terribly dark .... but it's a certain scene in the movie Batman Returns ... he has that "look" ... his eyes just gave off something that to me was exactly the way the hero in the book I was reading would look at the heroine .... and regardless of his dark roles, I keep seeing Christian Bale, even though I later thought of Ben Affleck in his most assured presence and went with him for my casting challenge .... LOL, see casting agents can be fickle
I chose Josh Lucas for your Jack simply because of certain feeling his role in Sweet Home Alabama and then later in Unfinished Business that came to mind ... in the "romantic" lead roles he's got a certain charm, where he's assured in what he does but not in his own self when it comes to the heroine .... he has a vulnerablitiy that is endearing ..... there's a scene towards the end of the movie in Sweet Home Alabama when he pushes his soon to be exwife away, and I can picture Jack pushing Tiffany in the same way .... there's an undercurrent of "don't you know I'm doing this for your own good?" though it's never spoken ... there's alot of pain in that scene
ahh, the kiss from "Speed" ..... yes, that was a great kiss .... that was great casting, Keanu and Sandra ... they just sparkled ..... and yes, the kiss ..... I've been a devoted Keanu fan every since! LOL ....... and yes, I can definitely see Keanu as Jack
casting from a "finished' work is so much different than casting for a work in progress ..... I rather enjoy matching an actor to a hero .... I get to draw on my own experience of the actor in past roles and then envision him portraying the hero I'm seeking ... I get to decide if the actor is worthy of the hero ... cool! LOL

Sweet November
Katherine, I haven't seen the movie Sweet November. I just went and watched the trailer on You Tube. Guess what I'll be renting one day VERY soon! I don't know how I missed seeing it.
The kitchen scene -- the actor looked like Jude Law, maybe?
Sandra Bullock is one of my favourites and she and Keanu Reeves look really great on screen together. I enjoyed them in Lake House, too.
So many movies, so little time... LOL!
Thank you for your insights about Jack's character. I've found them really interesting.
