Book 7
of the Cooper’s Corner series was a fast read for me. This is the story of Mike and Colleen. Mike is a self-proclaimed family man posing as a bachelor. He wants his family back, but he does not want his ex-wife. The ex-wife has their two girls, but needs to take a break. Colleen is a single parent struggling to make ends meet, but she wins a vacation to the B and B in Cooper’s Corner. It’s there that Mike and Colleen meet. There are some other characters including Cassandra and Tom. Relatively incidental to the story Tom and Cassandra unwittingly cause me some distress.
On page 189, Tom is trying to convince Cassandra to take a walk with him. Next paragraph, ”She nodded and they set out across the parking area toward the trees, Tom with an arm around Colleen’s shoulders.” Arghhhhhhhh! Wrong name. This story is about Mike and Colleen. Tom and Cassandra are minor characters in the story, but somehow the women’s names are switched in this sentence. Why wasn’t that caught? I had to re-read twice to figure out what happened. It is one of those little things that can bounce a reader right out of the story. Page 231 there is a word I have never heard before, “exploratively.” Well, I suppose if there is a word, “explorative” then why not add the ‘ly’. One little word. One little word that took me right out of the book again.
So far this is the book I least care for in the series. If I was giving books a numerical rating using a scale of 1-5 (5 being a top ranking and 1 being a low ranking) I would give this one no more than a 3 and maybe not even that. There were some redeeming qualities in the book. Mike is hard not to like. Who wouldn’t want a man that is so family oriented? Colleen is a little tougher to like, but maybe that’s because I relate a bit too much to her.
