Memorable Proposals

I haven’t seen the movie, The Proposal, yet, but when I heard about it I started thinking about memorable proposal scenes from movies, and television series. Some that came to mind immediately were:

Pride and Prejudice (the movie) - at dawn, in the rain, and the words, “You have bewitched me body and soul”.

Jerry McGuire – who could forget this one? And her memorable response: “You had me at hello”.

What about Sex and the City? In true Cinderella style, Big got down on his knee, confessedhis love to Carrie, and sealed the deal, not with a diamond ring, but with a blue jewel encrusted satin Manolo Blahnik heel. It was perfect.

When Harry Met Sally and that unforgettable, “I want to spend the rest of my life with you” proposal by Billy Crystal.

What do you think of public proposals?  Personally, I’d hate it, but they work in movies.   My favourite public proposal is from Love Actually – Colin Firth’s Jamie speaking Portuguese, badly, to Aurelia.

Or maybe its from While You Were Sleeping - the proposal scene at the ticket booth when Bill Pullman’s character is surrounded by his family. And the look on his face when Sandra Bullock tells him she can't let him in.

And then there's Walk the Line. When June Carter tells Johnny Cash that he can only speak to her onstage, she doesn’t imagine it will mean a public proposal. He tells the audience that he won’t finish the song until she says yes.

Did you know that there are event-planning businesses that plan proposals in minute detail? Location no problem. Venice, the Great Barrier Reef, anywhere, it seems. I think I’d prefer something simple and heartfelt.

What kind of proposal(s) have you received? Memorable, or best forgotten? Romantic, or embarrassing?

Do you have a favourite proposal scene from a movie, a TV series, or a book? It would be great to hear about it.

Proposals

Well I've been married twice and neither one of mine were particularly impressive. Well the first time I got married I was 18 and he was 19 so not very many 19 year old men are all that romantic. I would hate the public proposal too. The ones where you are at a sporting event and they flash it up on the big screen asking someone to marry them, not for me. I loved While You Were Sleeping, I watch it again ever once in a while. And I think there is something wrong with a man if he has to have a planner plan his proposal. I mean gee, how personal.

Ah Claire you've already

Ah Claire you've already mentioned my favourite - While You Were Sleeping - just get goose-bumps.

There are too many in books to choose from. Honestly. And right now my brain can't think Wink

cheers

While you were sleeping

has to be my favorite proposal scene. I also would not like a public proposal.

I actually proposed to my hubby. We were both stationed in England and I was getting out of the Air Force soon. I told him he was the one and we needed to do something before I was shipped back to the states. (Doesn't sound overly romantic does it?) Fifteen years later we're still married and that base in England is still our favorite assignment.

I love the episode on

I love the episode on Designing Women were Julia thinks Reese is going to propose, because he claimed to have bought her a present that is small enough to fit on one finger and gold. The present turns out to be a bird, but in a rather funny drunken state Julia and Reese get married. Julia wakes up with morning after regrets but is furious when Reese shows up with annulment papers!

<Shudder>

Oh, Linda, the big screen proposal would be my worst nightmare. And no, 19 year olds are not very romantic are they?

Eleni, I can't remember many proposal scenes from books, actually. (Even those I've written myself.) I can remember the characters, sure, but the proposal scenes have faded from memory. I wonder why?

Angel - sounds like a good thing you proposed when you did. Very practical.

Designing Women is one series I never watched, Sheryl. I'll have to look out for re-runs.

Proposals

I enjoyed the Love Actually one and While you were sleeping too!

My proposal was memorable and romantic, with a dash of cute - kind of like my hubby really! For my 21st birthday DH bought me a trip to Europe (from Oz). We had some wonderful days but there came a day in Barcelona that was simply brilliant. That night he said "can i ask you a question?" i knew then, but couldn't believe what was happening. "Ah yep." He got down on one knee and held out a lovely diamond ring that he'd carried through Vienna and Switzerland waiting for the perfect moment. "Will you marry me?" Shock froze me. there's thinking you know - and then there's it actually happening. "It's, um, not a joke," he filled in helpfully.

I rushed to accept. When i went to ring my family back home (3am their time) i was told it was nice but he'd asked for my hand in marriage before we left and could they go back to sleep...Smile

Aw, Bec...

That was lovely. And he asked for your hand too! Gorgeous. Smile

bec

That was a very romantic proposal. Good man that he didn't lose that ring going through all the airports.

My dh proposed after a night

My dh proposed after a night of contra dancing, when we went out for ice cream. Not the most romantic setting, but it sure was tasty. Wink
