Allie O'Connor has been a reporter for Stars and Stripes in Japan for two years, but she still feels like a complete foreigner.  When her best friend moves away, Allie prays for a new friend because that's the only thing that will make her assignment bearable.  Her prayer is answered in the surprising form of high school classmate Erik Larsen who's been assigned to the US embassy and now lives near Allie.  In school they were polar opposites and rivals.  Allie discovers that they do have common ground and maybe always have had.  In some ways they are still opposites-where she resists attempts to fit into Japanese culture Erik jumps in with both feet-but that cements their new relationship even more.  Allie is at a bit of a loss as to what to do with this new, unexpected "friend", but she does know she doesn't want to lose him.

Oh, this book was just as wonderful as The Cubicle Next Door and Kissing Adrien!  You get a realistic peek at what it's like to be an American living in a totally foreign culture.  The romance is good & mushy, but I also liked the way Erik made Allie be brave enough to live her life rather than just exist
