Copied Blurb:
Will this baby save their marriage--or destroy it? Erin Cahill has always been known as Lucky--although the name Trouble might suit her better, since she can't seem to stay out of it.
Lucky definitely loves her husband, a police captain in their Alabama town, and Jack definitely loves her. But despite that love, despite all the laughter they share, Jack and Lucky argue about everythig: where to live, how to live, work, family, everything. So they do the logical thing and separate.
There's a complication, though, a really big one. Because Lucky's pregnant.
My Review:
Another wonderful story by Fay Robinson. I was so thrilled to find this in a used book store. And I don't know why I took so long to pick it up and read it. It had such a great storyline, with quite a lot of suspense. It also had a side character who had autism, which I found very interesting to learn more about. The only problem I had was with the H, Jack. He was a bit over-the-top, trying to keep his wife safe and healthy. If it had been me, I woulda smacked him over the head, especially a pregnant me
For those of you who haven't heard of Fay Robinson, she wrote, I believe, 5 Superromances, prior to passing away. The first one was a story called A Man Like Mac, which I read last year. If you haven't read that story before, I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy, it is a true gem! Thank you KathleenDoney, and Kalyko for giving me the nudge to read her books! I am saddened by the fact that there will be no more books written by her....but she has left behind true treasures in her stories. Now I need to find her other 3 Supers.

Sounds like a winner. I'm
Sounds like a winner. I'm gonna have to keep my eye open for this one.
I don't think I've read any of Fay's books, though I've heard great things about them and remember the memorial they had here on the boards.

Hey Tammy I read A Man Like
Hey Tammy I read A Man Like Mac awhile ago. I loved the story. Haven't read anything else by her but remember loving this book. Glad to see you enjoyed her book. I think I'll have to do the same as you and see if I can find any of her books at the second hand bookstores. Happy Reading
Hey Ladies!
Hey Jana!
It is a winner!!
I wasn't around on the boards when she passed away. But I understand she was young. I think she must have been quite a wonderful person, for the amount of heart she put into her books.
Hey Sharon!
Good luck finding more of her books!
I ended up lending my grandma my copy of A Man Like Mac. She hasn't read it yet. But I think she will really enjoy the heart put into the romance when she does get to it. Happy Reading to you too!

Tammy

Hi Tammy! Wonderfull to see
Hi Tammy! Wonderfull to see you found and enjoyed another of Fays stories.
I think it'll be years before i can read A Man Like Mac again...only because that story made such an impact on me...that after this many years, i still remember so much of it, vividly...and for me to be able to re-read, i need to have forgotten a bunch.
I rarely see her books in used stores, but i do sometimes see the odd one, so i'm sure you'll come across them all eventually. If i see any in wonderfull shape, i'll grab them.

Hey Kathy D!
Hey Kathy D!
I found this copy at Savers/Value Village. And it was in terrific condition. I was VERY happy, to say the least!
A Man Like Mac was a very special story. Pretty much every bit of it still sticks with me. Fay Robinson must have been a very special person to have been able to write a story that will stay in our hearts for that long.
Have you read Mr. and Mrs. Wrong?
Great avatar, Kathy! Is that your newest family member?
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, since my MIL was in town.
Talk to you soon!

Hi Tammy, You have that
Hi Tammy, You have that right, Fay wrote 5 SuperRomances before she passed away. She was an amazing writer imho, and she would've went along ways in her writing career, had she lived, i feel.
Yes, i read this one and enjoyed it. The only one i haven't read yet is The Notorious Mrs. Wright. Must be saving it since it's the last one. One day i should get it read...mind you, i'm not even sure what bookcase it's in right now. That's what happens when i move books around.
Yes, the avatar pic is of my Nikki girl. The pic doesn't do her justice though...it makes her look so much bigger, and she is only 2 lbs.-3 ounces. Just a tiny bit of a thing, with a tiny little face and head. I'll be changing her pics often to show her off.
Kathy D
Nikki is very cute!!
Hey Kathy!I
I completely agree with you. Her writing was very special. In this particular read, there was an autistic person, and I could really see the research she put into it, hoping to give us a better understanding of it. Just like the research we know she had to put into A Man Like Mac.
Isn’t The Notorious Mrs. Wright linked to this Mr. and Mrs. Wrong by Jack’s sister?
Lol, keeping track of our books is a difficult thing to do as our TBR’s grow, eh???
Your Nikki is sooo cute!! I want one!! Is she growing quickly? How much will she weigh when she is full grown? I am glad you will be changing your pic,, so we get to see her growth!

I read this book when it
I read this book when it first came out, and liked it. I loved A Man Like Mac, especially when I read it for the second time during last year's challenge. I have never been able to find any of her other stories, sadly enough, since I am sure I would like those too!
Hey Michaela!
Hey Michaela!
I am still on the look-out for her other books. I m hoping to find them in the same way I found this one. I am beginning to doubt whether it will ever happen now though.
But, like you, I am certain I would love them!! I especially want The Notorious Mrs. Wright, as I believe it is linked with Mr. and Mrs. Wrong.
Good luck finding more of her books!!

Hi Tammy, It's been so long
Hi Tammy, LOL It's been so long since i read Fays other stories, i don't remember anything about them anymore...well, except for A Man Like Mac.
But by the titles, i would say they sound like they would be most definately linked. Yup, the out-of-control tbr can get very confusing sometimes...but would i shrink it for simplicity? Not a chance! LOL
Nikki definately seems to me like she's grown some...i am taking her in to get weighed today in fact...i can't wait to hear the results. I also ordered a scale for my own use last night...then i can weigh her or my Pom whenever i want...it's also something i'll need for weighing the puppies when they come.
I just did a search at two out-of-print book sites i shop at...and i found some of Fays books for sale at one of them if any of you are interested...here's the link so you can look and decide for yourself:

Hey Kathy!
Heehee, no worries, I can't remember details from some books I read last year, aside from whether they were good or not.
Out-of-control TBR piles??
I keep telling myself I will slow down on the buying so I can get to some of the books I have. But then a bookstore has a sale, and, well, I just am unable to resist. But, methinks you know what I am talking about...
How is Nikki and your Pom getting along? Did the Pom accept Nikki as part of the family? My two dogs have a hard time getting along. I hear it could be because they are both female.
Thank you so much for that link! The prices aren't too bad either. You said you have shopped at that store before? How is the shipping rates?

Hi Tammy, I understand
Hi Tammy, I understand comp-letely about "telling ourselves to slow down on buying"...but it "doesn't work", cause "we" don't listen! LOL
Nikki of course loves Reba and wants to play with her really bad, but Reba's spent most of the time running away.
Reba is coming around slowly in the playing department, but i don't think she'll come around a whole lot due to her age and lazyness. Nikki does often climb in bed with Reba, and Reba doesn't automatically jump out anymore, so there's love growing there i think. lol
When i stayed at the breeders, she had 11 Yorkies all together, and the breeder said there was a male alpha amoung the males, and a female alpha amoung the females.... and the alpha female was the alpha of the whole pack.
Our female Pom that passed away was the dominant one between our two Poms...so i guess one could say she was the alpha? I'd never thought of anything in those terms before.
Yes, i have ordered from Mystical Unicorn many times thru the years. In regards to the bookstore...there is a shipping information section on her website that tells exactly what the postage costs will be. I wouldn't say it's cheap, but comparable to other on-line bookstores i think. Though, since shipping to Canada from the US went up...all Canadian postage sounds like alot to me now. But i looked at the US postage and it's alot less for you...but you'd know better whether it's good or not. Our postage costs in Canada are horribly high. I'd gladly pay your postage prices instead of mine. lol
Kathy D
Hey Kathy's!!
Hey Kalyko!
Woohoo!! Heehee, I do know a little something about it.
I am so glad it arrived, as I always worry about them getting lost in the mail, but I am so thankful it hasn't happened yet. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
I'll email you off-line about The Notorious Mrs. Wright, thank you!!
Hey Kathy D!
Yeah, those little pep talks about not buying more books really just back-fires, but then I‘ve always been a little on the stubborn side, in this case even against myself.
How old is Reba now? Both of your dogs sound so cute and cuddly. Did you get along well with the breeder in person? I know you had talked with her at length on the phone.
I haven't thought in terms of Alphas with dogs either, with the exception of the one who feeds them (the human) as the alpha dog. Our two dogs that fight all the time don't seem to dominate each other. I am thinking they are fighting more and more these days, but currently am blaming it on their boredom. They have been stuck inside the house because our temperatures are just too cold for them to be outside for any length of time. You know, kind of like my kids who are bickering all the time, too?? I think we all are quite ready for Spring!!
Oh, silly me!!
I do see the shipping costs...it was right there in front of my eyes. Our postage rates sometimes seem good here in the states, and other times the price doesn't make sense to me. I can ship two packages at the same time to Canada, but to two different addresses, and get charged one price for one, and double for the other. But either way, I am glad we are at least able to ship fairly easily between the countries. Christa_R and Katherine T were discussing the laws about shipping on one of their posts, and apparently US customs is stricter than Canada.
Thank you again for the Fay Robinson and Mystical Unicorn info!!

Tammy

Hi Tammy, Reba will be 12
Hi Tammy, Reba will be 12 years old this summer. I hate that she's getting so old.
Yes, i got along well with the breeder while i was there. I had a couple problems near the end when it came time to go over, and sign, the contract. She'd rewrote and changed/added to five different paragraphs(and hadn't told me)...luckily, i'd printed, and brought with me, a copy of the original that she'd sent me(just in case)...so while she read the new one to me, i followed along with the old one so i could see the changes she'd made. Was really hard to understand it the way she'd written most of it(made much harder by the fact i'd had so little sleep, and was sooo tired), so she had a fair bit of explaining till i understood better...also left to many things quite open for her i think...but i'm banking on her honesty and good name this show/breeding business requires to get anywhere. She has a new website up, and has Nikki's picture in the up and coming Starlettes in waiting...here's the link if you'd like to check it out: http://www.yorkhaven.ca/young_stars.htm
Blush, right above her is her sister...the one the breeder chose over my Nikki.
Shipping is so hard to judge costs...it's kinda wonky, not to mention very expensive, and how they work out everything, i have no idea.
Your very welcome for the store link. They come in handy when wanting a certain out-of-print book/books, really badly.
TC,
Kathy D
Hey Kathy!
Hey Kathy!
Oh, wow! I hadn't realized Reba was almost 12. I totally understand about hating that she is getting old; our fur babies age way too quickly.
Argh! How frustrating that she(the breeder) changed some stuff, but very smart of you to bring a copy along of what you both had agreed upon prior to your trip down there.
How cute, Kathy!! Nikki is the cutest one on that entire web page. What a real sweetie. I know I have said it before, but I want for myself a little Nikki!! I do need to wait until my kiddos are older before we add a new dog to the family. We have a gazillion pets as it is, and my 4 yr old wants a pet mouse. Not a rat, not a hamster, not a gerbil, or a guinea pig, but a mouse....hmmmm.....
So how old will Nikki be before you start showing her? Will you show her where you live, or will you have to goto PG, or fly down to where the breeder lives? I can't remember how far you had to fly to pick up Nikki.
Talk to you soon!
Tammy
"I would be the most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves"...Anna Quindlen
Hi Tammy,
Phoebe is our Pom that passed away, and she was the young one, not quite 5 years old.
It "was" frustrating to find out she'd changed the contract...and i'm not really sure why, cause it all comes out the same way as far as i could tell...just much harder to interpret.
I hadn't even noticed she was the cutest one on the webpage...but she really is so far isn't she. I "Did" however feel she's the cutest between her and Blushes.
Lol, i wonder where your 4 year old saw the mouse that she got hooked on? Two of my sons had hamsters...which thankfully each lived a year longer than their expectancy.(3 years each). There was a lot of tears shed when they each passed on...and they were aaaalllll mine. lol
I'm a real wuss when it comes to death...i can't handle it well at all.
Nikki will be old enough to show between 6 and 9 months. The breeder is considering showing her for me at the end of May in Edmonton, if Nikki's ready(she'll be just over 6 months old then). Ken is going to book holidays for then to be safe, and if Nikki's ready, we'll drive there.
I was going to attend a dogshow in April in Chilliwack, on the way back from my next Vancouver appointment, but my appointment got changed to the week before...so now i'll have to miss that one. I can't wait to attend my next dogshow...i think i've got the bug. lol
When i picked up Nikki, i flew from Prince George to Calgary...so quite a ways from Mackenzie & PG.
TC,
Kathy D
Hey Kathy!
Oh, that's right, I had forgotten how very young Phoebe was.
I hope that she(the breeder) remains honest for you....makes you wonder if she rewrote it with some loopholes.
She is definitely the cutest!! And she looks like she has so much personality compared to the other dogs.
I am not sure where she(my daughter) picked up on the mouse, but I think it might have something to with the fact that at Petco, the lower cages have mice, and the higher cages have the other small pets. Even though dh and I lift her up to see all the animals. The fact remains, the mice are the first ones and last ones she sees every visit to the store, which is often. I had contemplated letting her have a mouse for Easter, but I think I have decided against it. She is only 4, and I can see the mouse getting out of her hands, and she reaching to grab it with too much strength. And like you, I just can't handle the loss of pets. I think maybe one more year she may be ready for one. I think my son got his first pet, a goldfish, when he was 5. And then his first small animal, a rat, when he was 6.
So if Nikki will be old enough to show when she is 6-9 months, does that mean you area actively training her to have her prepared now? And if so, what does that involve?
Lol, I bet you have the bug!! If you continue enjoying the dog shows, will you be acquiring more dogs? If, I remember correctly, you do plan on breeding Nikki. Perhaps you will keep a puppy or two??

Hey Tammy,Me too, i know
Hey Tammy,
Me too, i know the breeders dogs come from a really good line...but i now know i can't always trust her to stick to things she says to me....and she often says things and then later contradicts herself, or, talks like she never said them...not sure what that's about...but makes me not trust what all she says very much anymore. Makes me more cautious i guess you'd say. I still like her though, just am more on the wary side...hope that made sense...
Nikki definately has loads of personality, and is lots of fun and often makes me laugh.
I'm sure your right why your daughter is leaning more towards a mouse. I also agree that she is way to young to properly care for one. She'll appreciate it way more when she's old enough to care for it i think as well. I could see it working if the mouse was, say, yours, and she got to help out with the care of it...then get one of her own when the right time comes.
When your son was six, did he look after the care and feeding of his rat solely on his own?
I'm not actively training Nikki no, she's to young to show train overly yet...it could turn her off for life if pushed to young i'm told. The breeder had originally told me not to worry, that when showtime came, that she(breeder), is a natural at it, and that it would be a piece of cake for her to get Nikki to respond well in the ring with no prior training... but, i can't just sit here and do nothing...i need to work with her, so i do what i can to socialize her(breeder said before i left for home that Nikki is to shy)...i try to talk to her in positive ways, in different situations, to help her gain confidence she'll need...i teach her to sit nice/still when groomed etc.,I also teach her to do what's called "stack"(how to stand when being shown...breeder showed me quickly how to do that.) and on March 9th i start a show handling course in PG, that runs for 7 weeks, every sunday for an hour...with a fun mock show day for the end. The breeder says to make it fun like doggy camp, so i don't scare her off show life for good, lol. I'd planned not to force anything anyway...but i will encourage and make it as fun as i can...and Nikki has bonded to me, so i'm sure the two of us will be fine, once we both get the hang of things that is.
If i really come to enjoy showing Nikki...then i will for sure be considering more show dogs in future., and yes, she came with a breeding contract...so as soon as she's old enough, i fly her to the breeder to be bred to the stud of her choice, then she's flown back to me pregnant.(assuming it takes(hopefully). The breeder gets first pic female puppy, then the rest are mine...and if another show potential female is in the mix...i'll be keeping her. If there is more than the two potentials....i will keep them all and grown them up a bit to be sure, before i sell any of them off as pets. A whole new world for me, but i'm really looking forward to it, and i'm excited.
TC,
Kathy D
Hey Kathy!
Hey Kathy!...
You make complete sense. And I understand in the business world there are those we can like, but still have to be a bit wary of.
Ah, Nikki sounds very cute, I wish I could see her for real.
Yes, I agree about my daughter not being able to properly care for one, but you should see her. She is drawing me pictures of eggs, and telling me a mouse is going to hatch out of it(And I really didn't want to explain to her mice do not hatch out of eggs) Then a few hours later, she shows me her hand, and says, here is my little mousy. And then even later, tells me she needs money because her mouse needs a cage. *Sigh* What to do, what to do?? She is truly a girl...thinking up any way she can to get her way. I am really trying hard not to be a softy on this one.
When my son got a rat, I got one too. So we "shared" in the care of the rats. We would do the cleaning together, and it was rather fun. He actually has two fish tanks now of his own. And while I helped him initially in learning how to care for the fish and keep the tanks clean, he now does them solely on his own. I am really proud of him. I actually think it may become a lifelong hobby for him. One is a 5 gallon goldfish tank, and the other is a 30 gallon tetra tank. The next thing he wants to do is grow freshwater plants. So he is currently doing research on that.
It sounds like preparing for dog shows will be fun! I can understand how putting too much pressure on a dog can turn them off for life in show. It makes sense. I am quite impressed with folks who can get their dogs to be obedient, especially without treats. While my dogs aren't bad dogs, about all we can get them to do is sit, and that's only when there is the promise of a treat forthcoming. Will your husband be coming with you to PG for the training sessions, or will you be doing the drive every week on your own?
So how old do you think Nikki will be when you breed her? From what I understand, dogs go through heat before they are truly ready to have puppies. Is that right? Do you have to wait until she has a few cycles before breeding her? And when you do breed her, and by some chance it doesn't take, will you be flying back to the breeder to try again?
I can tell you are excited, it sounds like a lot of fun!
Talk to you soon!
Tammy
"I would be the most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves"...Anna Quindlen
Hi Tammy,
I wish you lived close enough so i could show her to you in person as well.
Awww, your daughter sounds so cute about the mouse and her imagination with one. Another awww about your daughter thinking the mouse will hatch from a little egg and lol and awww at your not having the heart to correct her yet. I'm sure it's all so cute when she explains and shows you in her hand, that i wouldn't have the heart to correct her either, nor would i want the sweet stories to end so soon. She'll learn the true facts soon enough, and then she can regall you with more stories of how their really born.
I think that's a wonderfull idea, your getting a rat at the same time as your son, and then doing the cleaning and whatnot together, so he could learn while doing it with you...i wish i'd have thought of that when my two oldest sons got their hamsters. I probably would've thought it a great reason/excuse to get one for myself.
Such adorable little creatures...well, except for their teeth that is.
I'm proud of your son as well, cause caring for fish takes a fair bit of care when cleaning and feeding....but they are so worth it..both entertaining to watch and feed. We have 5 freshwater fish tanks. 3 - 72 gallon ones, a 25 gallon and a 10 gallon. I would recommend your son gradually add the plants of his choice to the tetra fish tank(the 30 gallon one)...the fish waste, will help feed the plants, while the plants help filter the tank somewhat...and Tetra's don't eat plants.
I'm not sure how i'll do at training for show dogs...i'm hoping by some miracle i'm more of a natural like the breeder.
lol
I found training my Poms to "shake a paw" fairly easy(once they'd learned to sit)...and once they learned that, i taught them "otherone"(put paw down and shake with the other paw). I tried to teach my first Pom, Reba how to "roll over", but i scared her off it for life for some reason, guess she didn't particularly like that one. lol And i taught them to turn and turn again...this one was fairly easy cause Poms love to turn in circles, they just had to learn to do it on command...and that's about it.
Ken will be driving me to PG, cause i do not ever drive anywhere but in town in the winter time, but he won't be attending. For the hour i'm in the class, he'll sit out in the truck and read a book, cause it doesn't give him enough time to go visit anyone. Not a hardship though, cause he loves to read...the time will fly by.
The news just said we've had over 18 feet of snow so far this winter.
Our record is 15 feet i believe. I knew we have one heck of alot, but i didn't know the number.
Cathy(the breeder) said Nikki would be bred in her second heat(aprox. 18 months) if i'm not showing her, or two years old if i am. I'm more comfortable with two years old, so i'm glad she'll be being shown...it buys her, and myself, some more time.
If Nikki is flown back to me and it turns out she's not pregnant, then yes, i have to fly her back on her next heat, and the breeder will join her with another stud of her choice. If i remember correctly, they go into heat aprox. every 8 months or so.
TC, Kathy
Kathy D
Hey Kathy!
Hey Kathy!
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you!
Lol, Kathy, I did totally understand you, but I also know how difficult it is sometimes to get across what you want to say with words.
I remember last year, during the challenge, I tried to head up to your house for coffee,
but after about a thousand miles I ran into a wicked snowstorm and was forced to turn around.
I imagine you had difficult time trying to keep a fresh pot of coffee going for me.
Thank you!! I think my daughter is super cute as well. We actually went into a local pet store shortly after my last post, and someone had forgotten to put the cover on the mice cage. We had fun at the poor employee's expense seeing them chase mice around. And then next thing I know, she says she wants a bird(right next to the mouse cages)!! Still wants a mouse, but wants a bird now as well!!
( I need a sighing emoticon here
)
Yeah, I don't want to teach her about the birds and bees yet. One thing that is really fantastic about where we live is that there is so much wildlife here in the Spring. Outside of my 9 yr olds window is a tree where every year a bird couple moves in, and lays 4-5 eggs. Then we get to watch within two feet these fantastic creatures get fed, raised and taught to fend for themselves. Ok, my point is, I think that's where my daughter got the whole egg thing from.
That was certainly my excuse for getting a rat! I never had one as a youth, so it worked out very well this way. Only thing is, my son and I loved both the rats just as much, rather than just the one we each had picked out for ourselves. With the rats, I only got bit once....and I think the only reason she bit me was she thought I was giving her food. Other than that they were the most docile sweet creatures. I do miss them.
Thank you again!! I'll have to tell my son that you are proud!! We actually picked up a few small hearty plants this weekend, per the store owners recommendations. We also bought a proper light for the tank. So we shall see how it goes. Needless to say, my son is very excited!!
And we did put the plants in the Tetra tank. It is a good experiment to see how they grow. Do you happen to know much about CO2 tanks for the freshwater plants?
Heehee, roll over probably is scary for our doggies. I know one of our dogs is very skittish about being on her back at all, while our other one Loves being on her back, and getting her belly rubbed.
I totally understand about not wanting to drive that far in the snow. As you might recall, we moved to the Minnesota from California. Where I lived in California never had any snow at all, never even got to freezing temperatures. But here, in Minnesota, we get our fair share of snow, and an unfair amount of freezing temps.
So lots of road dangers. I have been much braver this year that last year. But still haven't driven on a lot of snow. I usually wait until the roads have been plowed and salted.
!8 feet of snow???
Wow!!! That is a HUGE amount of snow, and you broke records too! So do you know the record amount of snow you have received in one storm??
I look forward to hearing about Nikki's showing, and a pregnancy in the future!
Talk to you soon!

Hi Tammy,
No problem at all Tammy. That's just "one" of the things i love about these blogs...laid back & pressure free. Though often there are times we'd love to hang out here longer/more...life does often get in the way, and there are no irrate people when we get back.

LOL, i remember that, last year was a very fun year IMHO...and the coffee, after a week...OMG
LOL cute, that your daughter saw birds beside the mice and now wants one of them as well. You should take her to see Yorkshire Terrior puppies next.
We definately need more imoticons....i wonder if anyone's mentioned recently that we need more?
I'd imagine it's safe to teach your daughter about the birds and the bees at her age....birds as in: parakeets! ...bees as in: bumble!
Oh Wow, lucky you all, to get to watch those birds and their babies...i'm envious, i'd pay an admittance fee to get to watch something like that live. I'll bet it was amazing and very exciting to see.
Rats and the size of their teeth, is definately a deterent for me. The part that drags on the floor,
is another deterent for me.
I don't know much at all about CO2 for the aquarium...but i do feed aquarium plant food to mine. I also have 2 large air stones, one near each end of each aquarium. Lots of very tiny air bubbles floating around all the water. The tinier the air bubbles, the better for the fish etc., but then you likely already know that...but, just in case.
Yes, i remember you made the big move from lots of warmth, to the warmth being doled out with the seasons. And the bridge collapsing on a day your dh chose to stay home due to feeling tired from having been away.
Are you enjoying the different seasons w/snow & cold also? Or would you rather have the California warmth back?
!8 feet of snow is what has falling this winter...a customer told me the record is about 22 feet, all on the ground at one time...he said you could walk on top of the snow and touch the power lines...and that people were shovelling their roofs and throwing the snow up, cause the snow banks were higher than the houses.
We've not had anywhere near that much on the ground at one time since i've been here...thank goodness.
We've had at least 5 feet on the ground at once this year. There've been years since i've been here where we've had more than that...but not for awhile that i recall. Our winters were getting milder for a few years...but then they left us and gave the snows back.
I'm not sure of the record amount of snow in one storm...but Ken says probably "at least" a foot and a half.
I hope Nikki gets much bigger before the prenancy time gets here...she's 4 months now and weighs 2 pounds- 14 ounces so far. The breeder told me Yorkies are finished growing by 6 months.
Then they just fill out a bit more over time.
TTYS,
Kathy D
Hey Kathy!
Hey Kathy!
Heehee, thank goodness it is laid back here(it is my favorite place on the internet)!! As I would have a load of ya all mad at me, if that weren't the case
. While I am often online, as my son's school program is on-line, I can often read messages, but need some time set aside for replying/posting/blogging, etc. So usually I do it in the wee hours of the morning after dh goes to work. Like right now, it is 5:00 AM. And the kids are still sleeping, and all is quiet in the house. I just checked our weather report and we are supposed to get 4 inches of snow tonight....I guess our above freezing temps last week were just a tease.
Haha!! I figured the coffee must have been just awful after a week!!
Yes, I agree, last year was a blast!
Latest animal update....my daughter now wants a puppy. Our local pet store (we are there all the time, can you tell??) had 4 puppies in. Two were miniature dogs, similar to yours. I can't recall the breed...but they seemed like they would get larger than Nikki. The other two were mixed breeds. Anyways, my daughter decided she wanted to take one home. On that issue, I had to lay my foot down. We have all we can handle with our two large dogs. But I did compromise a bit....she doesn't know it yet. I bought her one of those digi-pets (for Easter)...where she has to feed the pet, and give it water, etc. I figure if she can keep a digital pet alive, perhaps next year she can get a real one, whatever that may be when the time comes. Maybe a Yorkshire Terrier??
LOL, Kathy!! I will definitely teach her about the birds and the bees, thanks for the tip!
Watching the baby birds grow was very cool indeed! And I tell you, that mama bird worked her tushie off keeping them babies fed, wow! And the dad, too, actually. I am really hoping they come back this year. We need to figure out some way to take pictures of the babies. Our windows are designed to open outwards, so our screens are on the inside. When we go to take pictures, we get the screen lines, so you can't really see anything. And when the babies are so tiny, you need to have excellent focus. Did I mention what kind of birds they were? Robin Red Breasts. And they lay the coolest little blue eggs.
Don't like rat tails, eh?
We are still trying to research the CO2 stuff. Still not sure where to go with that one. But I am, however, interested in getting my son some plant food. What kind do you use? When we were at the pet store, there was a plethora of different plant foods. Iron supplements, vitamins.....so we didn't buy anything. My son has a long air stone across the back of his tank....so, yep, we do know about that. But thank you!!!
On different seasons....I have to say I really do enjoy having different seasons. I just wish there were some way of making the winter here less cold over the long run, and shorter. Is that asking too much?? When we lived in California, I don't think we appreciated the warm weather, because it was all we ever knew, and some days were just entirely too hot to go outside. We lived in a more desert like area, not at the beach or anything. So, yes, I like the seasons, but I have been ready for Spring since the beginning of February.
That is an incredible amount of snow!! Wow!! I have a hard time imagining shoveling snow off my roof. How do you even get out your front door if there is that much snow?
Even with five feet of snow on the ground at once, do you guys have a snow blower, or do you have to do it all by hand?
I loved the picture you had posted briefly at your Profile of Nikki trying with all her might to get up on the couch! Just absolutely adorable!
Okay, please keep in mind, I typed all of this before having my coffee, so if anything is confusing, or just plain wacky, you'll know why....now off to have my coffee, and then catch up on some other posts.
Take Care and talk to you soon!
Tammy

Hi Tammy, Gosh, i had nooo
Hi Tammy, Gosh, i had nooo idea this much time had gone by since i responded here.
Thank goodness people are more laid back here, or i'd have people mad at me as well lately. lol Yep, my time is very limited since we got Nikki, and i'll be sooo glad when i have more play time for me again.
We have our two big parrots for sale, so once i find a good loving home for them, i'll have a fair bit of extra time, and space, since they take alot of care, and i know once the puppies come, i'll go mad if i don't downsize a bit. lol I've got some time before i have to worry about that, but it's gonna take awhile to find good homes for them i'm sure.
We are getting the same teasing weather...some sun and the snow melts some more, then freezing weather and snows some more. Soon it will be over with, yay.
The upside is, i don't drink coffee, so Ken was the lucky one who got to drink the old stuff till it was gone. From the expression on his face, i'd say it got kinda nasty.
How cute that your daughter is wanting so many new pets...whatever she see's next, be sure to keep her away from the tarantulas.
Sounds like she's going to be an animal lover when she grows up. Yes, it sounds like you frequent the pet store lots. Me too, it's one of my favorite places to shop, right up there with bookstores.
I remember buying the boys something like what you bought your daughter. If you fed it properly, the egg would hatch and then you had a pet, dinosaur? or something like that to look after. If you didn't feed it right, nasty things happened. Is your daughters similar to that? I can remember having to babysit these things while the boys were at school, was fun at first, then drove me crackers, lol, all three boys got one at the same time. Kept me really busy so it wouldn't die. lol
I'd just love to have watched the whole bird, eggs and babies, in the nest. Do keep me posted if they come back this year. If you manage to get pictures of them, i'd love to see them. It's funny, but i never even thought of the type of bird...i think i just assumed it was either swallows or robins, since they are the most common ones to build nests closer to civilization. Robins would be much more exciting though.
Yup, lol, it's the tails that totally turns me off.
The plant food i use in the aquariums is, Plant Grow, Iron Enriched, by Nutrafin. Have you come across any more info on CO2? I enjoy researching aquarium stuff and was planning on seeing what i could find, but gosh, i just don't have the extra time right now, darn-it.
In regards to snow, we keep paths shovelled/snow blowed all winter, or we would get out our doors, or in our sheds etc. There have been winters where the roofs have needed to be shovelled off twice, and both times the snow was over Kens head up there. When the wind gets it unevenly heavy more on one side of the roof than the other...it needs to be dealt with soon or it puts out homes doorways etc., out of whack and too much shifting takes place and cracks start to get worse. It's harsh on our homes and driveways etc., these winters out here. I look forward to when i don't have to deal with them anymore...18 years is more than enough for me.
Jayne reposted that pic of Nikki, farther down the thread, so everyone could see it. I love that pic...and it was just as cute in real life. I have a stool there for her now, so when she forgets to use it and trys to climb lately, she falls back down real quick...guess she's gotten out of shape. lol
You do pretty good for someone who hadn't had their coffee fix yet. Mind you, if you were snarling, i wouldn't be able to tell on here.
Enjoy your visit with your dh family, and your mom after their gone.
TC,
Kathy D
Hey Kathy!
Lol, Kathy...no problem on the timing!! It has taken me a great while to get back to you. It seems as if I have less time to pley here than I did last year. But I can't seem to pinpoint why. Last week my mom was here, and it was dh's bday, as well as my now 10 yr old's bday. I can't believe it. I now have a child(my baby) in the double digits.
How old are your parrots? I understand they can live for a very long time. Have there been any takers for them yet? I can't wait to hear about Nikki having puppies!! I hope you or one of your sons will be able to post pics of the litter when she has them. You know, we all wanna see!!
On weather....when my mom was here, we had some fantastic weather. We were able to go hiking, and on a bike ride, as well as the zoo. I felt so lucky....then the day before my mom left, snow came back to haunt us. While I don't hate snow, I prefer sun at the end of April. Today, however, most of the snow is gone, but it is cloudy and gloomy.
Haha!! Good thing you didn't have to drink coffee that old!! It can get very yucky! Please tell Ken, thank you for not letting it goto waste, lol!
ROTFLOL!! I will be certain to keep my daughter away from tarantulas!! No way do I want those creatures in my house, it's bad enough my daughter names the Daddy-Long-Legs we have around the house. We aren't allowed to squish them in front of her....thankfully my son will do the whole catch-and-release thing. I love pet stores too....always something there I want.
Heehee, no, I think the gadget my daughter got is easier than the ones your sons had. Hers is a pet digital cat, and it gives her points if it is well fed, and has had plenty of time playing. But if it gets missed a time or two, no one gets in trouble, and the pet doesn't get too mad. I couldn't imagine aving to keep it alive when she was busy elsewhere. I am proud of you for keeping three pets alive like that when your boys were at school!! The things we do as parents!!
I believe you must have been quite busy.
We are still thinking/hoping robins will be out my son's window this year. But we still aren't sure if they will come back. Since winter has been so long this year, we still don't have any leaves on our trees. This time last year, there were leaves everywhere. Robins were very exciting, especially since the eggs are blue, and so easy to see. My son compared the eggs to those chocolate malt balls he received at Easter time. If they do come back, I will try to get pics up for sure!!
Thanks for the info on the aquarium food! My son tried to create a CO2 tank from homemade materials and it works, but doesn't seem to last long enough. He put grape juice, sugar, and yeast in a bottle, and after a day or so, it starts to produce C02. Which is what the pet store said the plants need. But the length of time it lasts seems short versus the cost of the grape juice, so we are thinking of getting a real tank for it. Not sure yet what kind or brand. Since my son just had a bday, he has a bit of cash to burn....he wants good/better lighting as well.
Wow!! That definitely sounds like way more winter snow than we get here. We get a lot of cold here. But the snow is manageable. Never to the point where we can't open doors, or drive our 4 wheel drive out of the driveway. We still shovel, of course, but still nothing crazy. The temps do get super cold, some weeks stay under zero degrees F, or -17.7 C. And that gets very boring, indeed. I understand you when you say, 18 yrs is long enough!
Oh, Nikki sounds just so incredibly cute! I am hoping you will be able to get some more pics of her up soon??
I started this reply last night, and finished up this morning....and actually have had a bit of coffee now. So I don't have any excuses if some of this doesn't make any sense this time, lol.
Talk to you soon!
Tammy

Hey Tammy, Like you, i
Hey Tammy, Like you, i just don't have the time to spare that i did last year. And this post requires finding a larger block of time. lol
Also, there are so many sad/scary things going on in this town. At least 90% of Mackenzie is unemployed right now, due to mill closures, shutdowns etc. Kens mill is bankrupt and did have a buyer, but they pulled out of the deal at the last second, so we are now added to the list of unemployed. Even worse for us, cause the company doesn't have the money to pay what they owe everyone, including holiday pay. For us that's 5 weeks, so alot of money.
Not to mention, it really puts a damper on book shopping too.
Belated Happy Birthday to your dh and double digit, i mean son
. The time sure does fly, especially once they hit highschool for some reason.
Re parrots: Our African Grey is about 4 1/2 years old...life expectancy in the wild is 65 years.
Our Blue Fronted Amazon is in her 30's somewhere. Noone's completely sure, but that we are her 5th owners... Amazons are said to live 100 years in the wild.
In captivity i recently learned it's alot less...but i've never gotten an easy to understand answer. But i think the gist is at least half the age in the wild. Still a very long time.
I spoke back and forth with a lady thru e-mail, who turned out only wanted my African Grey( i'm selling them together), and she complained so much about having so little money to afford to pay much for her...i wouldn't sell her to her. Feeding them alone is not cheap, and i won't let them go to a home that isn't going to be the best for them.
I still haven't figured out how to post pics. I did it once along time ago, with a bit of help from my son(must've been more help than i thought lol)...and now i can't get it to work, so i get frustrated, and i don't try it again for a long time.
We are having awesome weather this week., temps. in the 20's. I actually burned my arms today, i know, not smart. I need to buy some sunscreen, and actually use it for a change. Otherwise i burn far to easily.
LOL about your daughter naming daddy long legs! Cute! I recently learned that they have the most toxic venom of all spiders, but are just to small mouthed to bite us. Thank god for small mouths!
I was definately busy keeping those electronic critters alive for a bit. lol Was fun at first, cause the boys would come home for lunch all excited about how they were doing and if i remembered to do everything so they wouldn't die...but then they started finding it fun to starve them and kill them off in different ways, so my babysitting days were over, thank goodness.
Your very welcome. What an interesting, though costly, way to make CO2. I'm sure it was very educational for him to at least try that route. Has he decided on a tank yet?
I would love to put more pics of Nikki up, if the silly things would show up. lol Maybe i'll have to e-mail you some. I know how to do that, if i do it one at a time. When done one at a time, i'm automatically asked if i want them smaller...more than one at a time and i'm suppose to be a genius and know how to do it myself.
Everything made perfect sense to me, so you must've consumed extraordinary amounts of caffiene when you wrote this.
Talk to you soon, or better yet, when you have a big enough block of time free,
Kathy D
Hey Kathy!
Hey Kathy!
Oh, boy, It has been a while since I chatted at you here. Sorry it has been so long! Currently, my in-laws are living with us (just for a week.) But when I say living with us, I mean literally. They had all their furniture moved from California to here....into my house.
So things are hectic, and a little on the crowded side, to say the least. They officially close on their house today, and are renting a moving truck tomorrow. So I keep saying this, and something else sneaks its way into my life, but things should settle down soon, heehee!
Oh, wow! I remember when you and Ken were working all that overtime. And hoping the company was good for it, so sorry they haven't been able to pay you yet. So what is Ken doing? Working odd jobs? Or did you guys have enough saved up to hold you for a bit? Does it affect your job at all, with most folks being out of work? I bet it does put a damper on book shopping! Eeek!!!
Thanks for the Happy Bday for my guys! Time does fly, and I am not looking forward to having the kids all grown up. It seems my life is so entwined with theirs, I am not sure what I am going to do when they are independent.
Wow, the birds/parrots really do live a long time. I understand you wanting them to goto a great home, and to keep them together. Since your last post, have you been able to find a home for them?
Heehee, I think you have managed to post pics now, as I just saw some really cute pics of a precious new baby! Congratulations, grandma!! I will post more on your new grandma post when I get a chance...but I am so happy for you! And I loved the story about your grandbaby and Chad, sooo funny!!
I bet your weather has gotten even warmer since your last post. We are having hot an humid weather here this week, actually have had to use the air conditioner for a few days. But really, I am not complaining. It is so nice to get the kids out in the wading pool. Not so much my son, as he is getting a bit big for it, but he still manages to get his feet wet and splash with his sister. Not too many storms here either lately....which is nice!!
Ugh, toxic daddy long legs! I didn't realize that, and we have so many "pet" daddy long legs around the house. I really need to get around more often than I do to clean them up. After our basement flooded, it brought out a few not so friendly looking bugs and spiders for a few weeks. One looked like a brown recluse. Have you heard of those? They are toxic and deadly. It was under my stairwell, in my basement. I tried to get my hubby to come home from work and kill it. But he wouldn't, and I was a bit upset at him. I am not a spider person at all. So the kids held a flashlight for me, and after about an hour, I worked up the bravery to kill the darn thing. Scary!!! I am getting the chills typing about it right now. Anyways, everything seems to have calmed down in the basement, no more weird or toxic bugs....thank goodness!
Lol, I can see boys having fun seeing how quickly they could get the electronic pets to die.
Glad you didn't have to help then out for too long!!
On my sons fish tank...he decided to get CO2 diffuser, or is it infuser?? Anyways, you feed the thing little tablets, and it puts CO2 into the tank. But he ended up getting an algae bloom, and we had to back off on the CO2 for a while, until it cleared up. But it is a fun, and very interesting learning experience. I was pretty proud he didn't give up when it happened.
I would love to see more pics of Nikki. Especially now that she is probably full grown. I see you have her pic up again in your avatar. How is she doing btw? Does she like the new addition to the family, or did you keep her away from your grandbaby? Do you still plan on showing her?
Okay, on coffee, I began drinking it at the beginning of this post, and just finished the cup now. So I wonder if it gradually starts to make sense, lol!
Talk to you soon! Hopefully next time, it won't be so long before I get back to you. And I understand if it takes a while to get back here, have a great week/month...heehee!!
Take Care,
Tammy

Hey Tammy! Long time no
Hey Tammy! Long time no talk to.
hehe. Seriously though, no problem, really. I know how hard it is to keep up to this new challenge blog this year. I'm having an especially hard time myself. And look at it this way, you "out-lated"(not a word, but it works don't ya think?) me this time.
lol
OMG... sounds like your going to have a veeery squishy/crowded and hectic week, and be reeeally happy once you get your space back.
I bet your kids think it's great fun though. lol Especially the obstacle course.
How's it going so far?
Kens been unemployed since the beginning of May, and is collecting EI, which isn't alot, but better than nothing that's for sure. Ken and two of our sons have some resumes out and are waiting to hear back. One place told Ken that they want to hire him and the boys as a package deal, and recently told Ken he will likely get a call at the end of this week and be the first to get hired. It's a looong ways from here, and we've never been there, but i've heard it is nice. With practically our whole town unemployed, the chances of selling our house become very slim as well, but, there are retirees from big cities buying some of us up. So if it comes to that, hopefully we are one of the lucky ones.
As far as my job, our shop has definately slowed down some lately..., mind you, it usually slows a bit at this time of year anyways...but the boss is going to see how it is by the end of this month(she's going away till then), and if things are still slower, she's going to lay off the new girl... but we're still doing ok overall, considering...thank goodness hair keeps growing.
Ken and i went into the bank yesterday and re-wrote our morgage...that hurt cause we were almost payed off. But you do what you gotta do in these situations, and i refuse to let it stress me out and get me down. That's an awefull feeling and i'm avoiding it like the plague. lol
We've had several businessess close permanantly, so it is very serious what's happening here in Mackenzie.
It definately has put a damper on my big book shopping,
, but i'm still sneaking them in here and there.
It's physcologically soothing don't ya know.
.
No, i haven't found a home for the parrots yet...i've had several calls from Vancouver...but it's way to far away. I'm going to have to step it up now though.
Thank-you for the grandma congrats. It's is very exciting. Yes, i finally figured out how to get facebook to work for me. Maybe it's cause i was more relaxed...or that the new additions htere made it simplere, not sure...just really happy i got it working.
As far as the profile p
