My Challenge to Y'all for July and August

Okay, you've all figured out by now that I'm obsessed about getting the numbers flowing for the challenge. So, I thought that to get numbers flowing faster, I'd throw out my own version of the "Read from your older TBR" challenge. My version is this. During the months of July and August, I challenge you to choose the shortest full-length books from your TBR (older or new TBR).

I'm thinking that by doing that, we'll see challenge numbers go up faster, and I think that the momentum can carry over to other members and into the fall, when reading usually slows down. What percent of short books should we go for? 100% is a unreasonable, esp. if you're on vacation for a week when maybe you want to enjoy your longer reads.

Is 50% still unreasonable? I say at least 30%, but if you think you can do it, then go for 50%. I'm going to see how high I can make my own "short" read percent. I have lots of HMRs and HRs. Not so many Desires or Presents, but I can read any of those in a couple of hours, so I could up my stats to one book per day. In theory, anyway. Lots of yardwork to be done, but that's what audiobooks are for LOL!

And as a corrollary to this challenge, I challenge any of y'all who read short stories to get enough shorts read to do at least one "combined to make a full-length read" during July and another during August.

Who's game?

Edited to add: from the "Writing Guidelines" pages here at eHQ, these are the shortest (full-length) reads:

  • HMR, HP, HR, SD = 50,000 – 55,000 words
  • HAR, HB, HI, SRS, SSE, SHLI, SHLIS = 55,000-60,000 words

Join the 2008 Book (Reading) Challenge!!! It’s for a good cause and it’s FUN!
Come find my teammates and me at The DFWPlus Blog!

Well HPs and SDs are my

Well HPs and SDs are my favourite lines to begin with, so I'm reading tons of those and powering through the numbers anyway.... so I guess you can count me "in".  *grin*

Define "short"

I guess this means I won't be reading those Diana Gabaldon's in July Undecided Cool

I've run out of the short shorts until you send me that big pile of Medicals

but let's face it Intrigues, HARs, SRSs SSEs and Blazes barely take me that much longer

If I'm going away for a week how many books should I bring with me? Because yes I have to be polite to the inlaws but they're used to me reading quite a lot, I'm hesitating between 50 and 75, 50 should be more than feasible, if I were to only read "shorts" I'd have to bring between 75 and 100, but I'd like to leave myself a little leeway for choice, just in case I pick up three in a row that push the wrong buttons. So when you know I can easily read five to six books a day and I'll be physically "there" for 8 full days ... how many do I bring?

I won't be able to recharge my ebooks (even if I were to bring the computer) so that's not a solution

I have plenty

I have plenty of Silhouettes Desires, Special Editions, Harlequin NASCAR, Nocturne, American Romance, I can read for the challenge. But I have to finish the one I started yesterday first.

Shell

Shell, what are the word counts on those?

Silhouette Desires, Special Editions, Harlequin NASCAR, Nocturne, American Romance

I was under the impression that the Desires were shorter than the others. But, I know that a lot of the lines have really dropped their word counts in the last couple of years. Are they all about the same length these days? (As a reader, it's probably easier for you to just check the number of pages?)

Curious minds want to know LOL,

Penn

Sadhbh, read whatever you want on vacation.

Maybe read some short French books? Make the challenge your own -- maybe read more in July and August than you've averaged per month through June? Whatever. I'm thinking your numbers aren't a concern LOL.

"I'm thinking your numbers aren't a concern"

except for DH LOL

I think I might decide to go with "old faithfuls" in the imprint lines for my holidays, I'll bring the occasional exception but let's face it if I get it wrong, I'm stuck with nothing to read except the six John Grishams I've left there for other anglophones (SIL is married to an Englishman and the brother is coming too, but he'll look after his own reading materials), so Blaze, Intrigue, SRS and any SSEs, Supers and stuff that tickles my fancy

Now if a certain M bag had been sent, I wouldn't have to "choose" Wink

HARs, Intrigues, SSEs and the like are between 220 and 250 pages, just in case you're interested in word counts

Count me in!

I have a ton of SSE, Harlequins, and even older Silhouettes that I haven't read.  I can do it....I think!

Excellent idea!

I've been lax on so many of my Desires, Presents and even my beloved Blazes.  This is added incentive to work my way through them.

I'm in but I kinda

I'm in but I kinda did this last month and was already planning to do it again. I did make a little progress on my TBR and it felt good. I do have a whole bookshelf of SRS, HI, HR, HD, and some HMR and HP's to choose from. However, I don't have any shorts to listen to on my ipod or in the car.

Hmmm audio books.  I

Hmmm audio books.  I haven't tried an audio book since I was in high school and thought it would be a cool way to "read" a romance novel during the boring hours of school on the sly.  It was too slow and took forever though.  I could have read faster in 10 minute or half hour breaks and been done the book so much sooner.

I wasn't really thinking about the audio books, Deb,

just b/c I figure that I "read" those when I normally wouldn't be reading (in the car, in the yard, doing housework and so on). I was just thinking that if we're trying to decide between 2 or 3 (or 50) books print or eBooks, that if we choose the shortest one then we'd get through more sooner, and that might inspire everyone. Of course, if you're going to be at the beach, then you might want to read a longer book that you've been putting off. But still, if we aim for 30% or 50% of our books to be shorter/faster reads, that will be an interesting experiment. And it's not cheating!! Just playing to our advantage. :)

Penn, who is aiming for well over 50% shorter reads this summer

Yea! People coming out to play with me! *grin*

How are we going to track this? Hmmm . . .

POST SHORT BOOK NAMES & AUTHORS WILL HELP US

Hi!

I have felt totally driven to read as many books for the challenge as I could, too.

But, I just started this a few weeks ago& I have left 10 book reviews for the challenge so far.

I found that a few of Maxine Sullivans books were wonderful & seemed shorter than some books do.

Are these the books that are supposed to have fewer words? Silhouettes Desires, Special Editions, Harlequin NASCAR, Nocturne, American Romance? Anything else?

I just don't like Nascar, but I can do the rest.

How about posting names/authors of any books we all read that are short, ok? I know that will help me.

Then, I will know exactly what to order.

Reading is a natural & wonderful escape from everyday life!

I don't think all the books that Shell listed are "shorter". Well, maybe they are "shorter" than single title, but not compared to other H/S books. (The NASCAR and Nocturne books look longer to me, even compared to other H/S books.) Over in the "writing guidlines" section, we have the info. My list below started out in alpha order, then I moved things around to group the word counts together from lower to higher (fewest to most?). Anyway, there's a little overlap here and there, but you should be able to quickly find the shortest lines/reads. If you're wondering what some of the abbreviations are, take a peek up above at the drop-down menu to shop.

  • HMR, HP, HR, SD = 50,000 – 55,000 words
  • HAR, HB, HI, SRS, SSE, SHLI, SHLIS = 55,000-60,000 words
  • HS (Supers) = 60,000–65,000 words
  • Kimani TRU = 60,000–70,000 words
  • HH, SN (Nocturne), SHLIH = 70,000–75,000 words (75,000-90,000 for a M&B H)
  • Kimani Romance = Approximately 75,000 words
  • SHC, SHWF = 80,000–125,000 words
  • Kimani Arabesque Romance, New Spirit, Sepia, = 85,000 – 95,000 words
  • Kimani Arabesque Inspirational = 85,000 – 100,000 words
  • HQN Books, LUNA, MIRA, SPICE = 100,000 – 150,000 words

A couple of lines are missing b/c they weren't over in the writing guidelines (or maybe I missed them). But it's a start! We can see which lines are shortest and that's what this disucssion is about. I do think that the NASCAR books are in the longer categories, but don't know for sure.

Penn

I will try my best.

I don;t think I will be reading more but I hope to post at least two reviews for each day in July. If I succeed, I will have a 100 count. My dh showed me how to write them in word so I may be a bit quicker in posting as it will do spellcheck for me.  The Calgary Stampede is on and we always go down to the grounds so I may not get any postings done for the next week.

When I get a little money I buy books, and then if any is left I buy food and clothes..-- Erasmus

NASCAR

The NASCAR books are shorter than the Nocturnes (since the Nocturnes are the same length as HH) but longer than the HI and SRS books.  They are about the length of the older HI and SRS (SIM) books before TPTB hacked down the word count.

Personally, I would count the NASCAR, etc. books as shorter reads because I could read one a day, but also because I have come to prefer the single title books like HQN and MIRA when I want more than a bite-sized read.  I feel like most of the lines have really gotten small enough that they are "shorter" reads.

I would say that "shorter" would depend on personal definition.  If someone is usually reading books that are 350+ pages and can chow down on a HI in a day, then the HI is a shorter read for them.

Honestly, I can't read anything in a couple of hours except a YA book, which has low-level vocabulary and I don't generally have to think too much to keep track of the storyline.  There are too many interruptions, etc. around here.  Undecided  (I've had to go mediate 4 times since I started this post, which is probably about typical).  So I would classify anything that I could read in a day--like HI, SRS, or NASCAR--as a shorter book.

Of course, I don't have any Desires lying around.  The only "Desire" author that I read is Cathy Mann, and I'm caught up on hers.  Ditto for Presents.  I may have a couple HR and the old Silhouettes lying around, but definitely not enough to count as 30% of my reads.  If I'm going to participate, then I am going to have to count the NASCAR books as "shorter," along with some old SIMs.  I think that the two of those are the bulk of my TBR when looking at the lines published by Har/Sil.

J

Short reads

I agree that a shorter read can be defined as a personal preference.  For me I am going to shoot for any book under 230 pages, to me that's a short book.  On the otherside of that anything with 400+ pages I would consider a longer read.

I started a SD late last night, after reading this blog, and I am past the 100 page mark.  I should have it finished (and blogged I hope) by late this afternoon.

I am excited about this idea and really hope that the numbers go up.  I'm gonna link this page on my reviews for the shorter books.  I am hoping that it will help generate more interest.

Great Mini-Challenge, Penn!

I think if we all have shorter (what we each deem a shorter read) in our TBR's, this is a great mini challenge to help us get caught up with our TBR and it will benifit the Book Challenge too ....

if the lines mentioned aren't our cups of tea, or we don't already own them .... of course, go with what takes your fancy.... and make the purchases you'd normally make

I've been missing the "mini-challenge" part of the Book Challenge .... I think they're great ways to get us enthusiastic about reading and often pull us out of reading slumps ...

I've been incredibly busy where reading is not possible (no matter the medium) .... but when I do have reading time available I'm often stumped as to what to read next as I have so many great books waiting in my TBR ..... so thanks Penn for the push .... I have two complete 12 book multi-author series that I've wanted to read .. the Royal House of Niroli and the Brides of Bella Lucia ... this is the perfect time to get into those

and as all "mini-challenges" go .. this is a short term challenge, and we can get back into those great longer reads that are calling to us too when ever we are compelled to answer the calling

Penn, you're doing a great job promoting the Book Challenge .... you're an inspiration!

Hey J (and any other people needing recommendations for shorter books)...

I'm a big reader of HPs, and I like really intensely passionate HPs with HUMOUR in them...  I've got a KEEPER LIST with tons of HPs.  So if you want to try to find a few shorter books, you might like some of the HPs on my keeper list...   maybe check it out and see if anything jumps out and appeals to you?

Somehow Sadhbh

Somehow Sadhbh I don't think it matters how large your books are. You can probably read a Diana in the time it takes the rest of us to read an Intrigue. Just keep reading you're doing fine.

Sadhbh, since you can

Sadhbh, since you can outread so many of the rest of us I say go for any book, any length that you want to read.

Penn, I'm already on our idea of the mini challenge and have been choosing shorter reads to boost the count. So, I will continue with that plan for the months of July and August. It has helped me some that I have had some time off. But I go back to work next week. My work day is an hour shorter, so hopefully it won't damage my current pace too bad.

Thanks for pushing encouraging us all to up our numbers.

Nancy

Thanks, Janet, but I am not

Thanks, Janet, but I am not much of an HP person.  Plus, I really need to whittle my TBR down--uh--quite a bit before I venture to far away from my usual reads.  My family and my shelf space will thank me for it.  I have a handful of the old SRs and a couple of HRs that I can read for something of that length.  Also, considering that I have been reading books that are around 375 or so pages, any of the lines like HI and SRS are shorter reads for me.  I can usually plow through one of those in the course of a day--assuming that school is not in session.  I have a stack of YA books that I would like to get through before school starts also.  I need to add some stuff to my classroom library as roughly a third of it disappeared last year.  Most of the books in the stack are just slightly longer than a HP would be, so those won't take me long.  I just have to convince myself that I want to read for school and not for me!

Sadhbh--I would have to agree with everyone else.  Read what you want and you will still be adding numbers faster than the rest of us.  Smile

J

J... i know how you feel.

J... i know how you feel.  It would take a lot to push me towards a line I didn't naturally veer towards.  And if I did go to a book from a line I don't normally read, it would have to REALLY appeal to me.

Personally my taste is for intense steam and humour.  So yeah, if I was going to convince anyone to pick up one of the HPs I recommend they would need to have similar tastes.

....  I'd still recommend ANYONE out there reads Kelly Hunter's HP "Wife For a Week" .... because I choked and died as I read it.  Ridiculously funny.    My review has some "favourite scenes" you should check out.

Kelly Hunter

Janet I have to agree with you over Wife For A Week. Kelly is a fab writer - and you can see why she's up for a RITA for her 2nd book Sleeping Partners. But that's nothing - you should read her 3rd Taken By The Bad Boy. Man I laughed soooo much in that. And even cried a little. She just keeps getting better and better.

Amy.... I haven't seen

Amy.... I haven't seen those titles for sale.  :(  Are they released in NA yet?  I'll keep an eye out for books by Kelly Hunter for sure.

I just ordered "Bedded for Diamonds", the only other KH book I saw for sale, during the free shipping special, so that's on it's way to me.  That will be the second KH book I read.  Looking forward to it.  Because the Tristan character sounded exciting in "Wife for a Week"....  and if this book is in the same hysterically hilarious style, than I'll adore it.

I seriously thought I'd choke and die as I read "Wife for a Week" .... I was sitting near my computer and I kept squealing and nailing my keyboard as I read funny bits, that's why my review is pretty much a play-by-play of my reaction to the book, including squeals.

Short Reads

I have about six Silhouette Desires that are about 184 Pages. A short read for me is either a Harlequin or Silhouette. I have a bookcase half full of tbr historicals, that take at least two days. I got through a Super Romance and a Desire today.  I'['m about a third through the latest Elizabeth Hoyt historical. I've been working on that book for the last week.

Shell

KH

Sorry Janet - I mucked that up a bit.

Priceless is Kelly's second book which is being released in the States as Bedded for Diamonds. Then Sleeping Partners (RITA nominated) then Taken By The Bad Boy.

Janet when did Kelly Hunter's book come out ?

I tried looking for this book but Kelly is not listed on Author's page and I looked through the available presents titles with no luck. Am I looking in the wrong place? It sounds like a book I would really enjoy.

Kaelee Kelly Hunter

Wife For a Week was released as a Presents August 2007 and Bedded for Diamonds was released as a Presents February 2008. When I checked her website it looks like the other 2 Amy mentioned aren't available in NA

I read the books out of order and read BFD first but loved it so much that I tracked down a WFAW loaner. I'm kind of disappointed that she doesn't have a larger backlist.

Christa..  here's to

Christa..  here's to hoping that she's getting to work on her FUTURE LIST...  someone sit her down in front of the compy and hand her chocolate and coffee and whatever she needs to stay happy while sitting there.

About what Kelly Hunter books are available...  none you can buy off eharlequin at present!  Which is too bad.  Her "Bedded for Diamonds" is now sold out.  (I'm hoping my order went through ok before they realized they were sold out!)

I hope there's more from her, and that the keep coming quick.

Well .. not quite hopeless ....

the two North America releases by Kelly Hunter can be bought through the eBoutique ... in eBook format

Oh, EBOOKS....  I'd

Oh, EBOOKS....  I'd forgotten about 'em!  Hehehe.  Well I've got WFAW, and BFD is on it's way to me....  so I'm taken care of.  But that's good to pass on to the other people who we're making curious about KH.  Let's them know where to look to try out her books.

Any upcoming releases in NA?

I downloaded

both WFAW and BFD to my Kindle along with some others that someone recommended who shall remain nameless, but you know who you are. I will be reading BFD as soon as I finish up a Kate Walker bundle I got ( at a bargain too). What a deal!

I was wondering

I'm wondering how are we all doing with this challenge? Since I have to go and have a knee replacement on the August 26th, my last day for this challenge will be August 25th. I went back and counted from July 8th to today I've read 59 Harlequin / Silhouette books. How about the rest of you??

Shell

*POINTS AT DEB*  Hey!

*POINTS AT DEB*  Hey!  Question for you.  You downloaded WFAW and BFD...  did you get the ebooks from eharlequin?  I have an eharlequin ebookstore question....  what code do you use for the book challenge discount?  I emailed Lorie (twice actually) and haven't got a reply yet.  I really really want to buy BFD already!  I'm getting impatient.  (cha! I know, I already am past patient)

Janet,

You use the same code as for the the regular bookstore. I haven't bo't any eBooks in August. Now, if the books are already discounted, the coupon code won't work (you'll get a message about only being able to use one coupon). If you have a problem with the code, you can always buy the book and then ask for a refund (which I've done, in that instance b/c I had a better coupon that was expiring).

Good luck with your purchase!

Penn

Shell and all,

I've read 14 print or eBooks since July 1st and of those, 10 were Harlequin Medical Romances or Silhouette Desires (I've "read" 10 audiobooks since 7/1). That's a pretty high percent, but since a big percent of my TBR is HMRs and HRs, well, it's to be expected.

How are the rest of y'all doing?

Penn

Penn, the code doesn't

Penn, the code doesn't work.  *frowny face*   Janet fails apparently.  (The books aren't discounted btw, just the standard 10% off retail price....  I want that 30, lol!)

I'm almost ready to buy BFD at whatever frakking price, just because I wannnnnnnt it.  But then I'm also eyeing some of the September books at the same time.  I'd kind of like to try picking an ebook at a time, rather than buying one book at a time at the stores as I gradually get tempted and cave to the impulse buy.  (It's acutally quite sad the way I start off telling myself "I'll only buy my fav book this month and read the rest next month at the library")

I'm hesitant about ebooks but if I were getting instant answers, and instant books in my hands, I could be converted easily enough.  I'd have given in to impulse buys probably five times already this month.

Janet, here's what you do

First, know that it's an extra 10% off, so in the eBoutique, you're only going to have a 20% discount total. Then, go look on the sales page (not your cart) to see what the prices of your books pre-extra 10% are. Then go see what you're being charged. I get the discount, but they don't spell it out til the final total . . .

It worked for me just now, but it took me a few months to figure out how to read those screens since they're different from the print bookstores.

Good luck!

Penn

Well, I know you have to

Well, I know you have to press "apply changes" to get the discount to show up.... but in this case I was getting a message that said "coupon code could not be found" when I typed in the code.

I will try again.

ETA: Ugh.  I'm on a computer with a darn unactivated MS Reader, so it stopped me with an error message before I even got to the coupon point.  I'll have to fiddle with it later.  The only computer that I THINK I may have successfully activated the MS Reader on is my bedroom computer.... and my bedroom currently has two guys in it (sounds much more exciting than it is) and a huge ginormous hole taking up most of the wall (the windows are being replaced... and the window in my room takes up pretty much the entire wall.... I can't tell you how stupid a decision that was on the part of the builder... having a window that size makes you really feel the extremes of winter cold and summer heat, no matter what air conditioning and heating you try to use)

I'll be back to bitch moan and whine later probably.  *wink*

I have to admit that I did

I have to admit that I did not do very well with the challenge.  I had every intention of reading shorter books while I was home, but I was out of town for a  portion of July and August and took longer books with me so that I was not finishing up books in the airport, etc.  Also, I had a couple of staff development sessions in July and did not get any real reading done during those weeks.

I was hoping to have 50 books read by the time I had to start back to school this week.  Unfortunately, I missed it, but not by much!

J

I did pretty

good in July reading a total of 38 books. 14 were short reads and 10 were from my oldest TBR piles. I have read 20 books so far this month. My personal challenge is to read more than I buy with some of those to catch up my series books that I'm behind on and my SRS subscriptions that are piling up. So ar I've read 2 more than I've bought this month. Can I stay out of the bookstore? Any good books coming out tomorrow? Maybe I should drop in just to check.

Janet

My downloads come from Amazon as I have a Kindle. I don't download from the eH site so couldn't help you any. Glad Penn was able to talk you through. Customer service is great if you still didn't get your discount.

I don't know how many July

I don't know how many July books I read, I haven't yet blogged them all, I'm way behind and I have book stacks piling up.  I know it was slightly down because I'm wearing down my TBR pile and I was reading the Sherrilyn Kenyon DH series, which are slightly longer reads then my normal HP/SDs.  Still a fair bit of course though.

Anyhow.... EBOOKS...  I got a reply from Lorie (yay) but boohiss, obviously Janet is a failure at life or something because the darn code just isn't working for me.  I actually checked and made sure I didn't do something stupid like misspell "August" and of course I used all caps...  but grrr....  I'm sure it's something so stupid that I'm going to smack myself over the head about....  AUGUSTDEAL...  why won't you work?   Janet wants her books.   *frown*

And about my bitch whine and moan parade...  I'm being a bit of a drama queen I know.  I'm making an exaggerated joke out of it to vent.  I could sing an opera about my disappointment over not being able to get my paws on BFD and others when I want them.  It's better to exaggerate and laugh than bash my head against a wall, right???  right?   *is tempted by the wall*
