As the evening begins in a local jazz club, I sit in the corner smoking my cigarette in a slim, long holder. My ruby red lips blow the smoke in rings as I check the small compact mirror for any necessary touch-ups on my kohl eyes. Yes, checking my make-up in public is considered non-ladylike, but I must look my best at all times.
I recross my legs, shift my flapper dress just so my knees are exposed and await the jazz band to play a tune I can really dance to with that hunky guy in the opposite corner who keeps eyeing me through the haze.
Man, I really wish I could visit the '20's just once. Wouldn't time travel be amazing? Just think of all the possibilities! Flappers have always fascinated me, as has the fashion of this decade.
Women had bare arms, bare ankles and calves. Some dared to apply their make-up in public...these were the reckless women who rebelled...the one I want to be
. They danced through the night to hoppin' jazz tunes and didn't have a care about what people thought.
Another part of the '20's that I love is the Cloche hat. You have one in your closet, right? Oh, you need further explanation? A Cloche hat is the small, very fitted hat that slid over a lady's head. Women had to have extremely short cuts in order to pull off wearing such a hat (perhaps that's why I love them). I actually have one and would wear it all the time if I didn't look so silly.
One thing I really liked about these stylish hats is they were so tight and came down so far on a woman's head, she was forced to hold her head high to see where she was going. I think this would make her appear confident. Confidence was something not many women had in this era. They were just coming into more independence...another reason I love the decade.
So, what about you? Is there a certain time/place you'd love to travel to? I'd love to hear all about your secret fantasy travels
.

Oh wow, what an awesome
Oh wow, what an awesome post!
Hmmm... just to satisfy my curiosity, I would love to see the Romans and Greeks of Ancient times live, just to see if the men were sexy... I find all these famous characters - Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Leonidas (thanx to 300 movie), Constantine, etc - to be sexy and intriguing. I wonder if the real men were.
But to live in an era??? Hmmm, ok... this month we are celebrating Panama's 106th anniversary of our Independence. I was reading an article about the Independence and I admit I wished I had been there to see how it happened. Panama City back then was so small... how they managed to keep it a secret? How this small group united a whole country? The first time people waved the flag. There are several versions of how it happened, but not a definitive one.
So I would choose any remarkable historic event to experience first hand. I would love to be there just to witness as it took place. I often wonder how historians know these things - it is all hearsay. Perhaps these events didn't happen quite the way they think, wouldn't you love to have the real uncensored story?
XOXO

Hi Jules
I also write westerns, so it'd be fun to see a real western town in action for about 3 hours or so. I so need to have indoor plumbing, so I wouldn't want to stay too long!

Caira, I agree. Seeing some historic event would be awesome to witness firsthand!
Charlene, I LOVE Westerns! My dream is to visit a dude ranch, but when I tell people that, they look at me weird and say, "With, like, a tent and a horse?" YUP!
Thanks for stopping in, gals!

love it but glad I'm not living it
Topping the list of times I love to hear about and read about (but probably wouldn't want to live through) is World War II. My favorite uncle served in WWII and some of my best memories from childhood are of sitting on his knee just listening to the stories, not just of his time in the army, but of his life. He was an amazing story teller and I learned my love of stories from him.
This is why I love Suz Brockmann's trouble shooter books so much. Reading those WWII subplots is like reliving that part of my childhood.

Great topic Jules!
Great topic Jules! I'd like to visit Regency England and attend one of the big parties. Then zip me back to the present. Like Charlene, I need my indoor plumbing. I also need electricity, modern medicine, and dependable transportation that doesn't include horse poo.:) I could so see you being one of those hot flapper ladies with your super stylish short crop!:)

Regency, undoubtedly!
Hey Jules!
Oh, I love your post. And for me, definitely, definitely the Regency era. What I wouldn't give to don the dress and dance the dance and let the rake steal a midnight kiss!

I would like to visit the west during the 1870's or 1880's
for a few hours and then come home. I enjoy my indoor plumbing and air conditioning too much to want to stay back there. I also enjoy a washing machine instead of a washboard or just rocks to clean my clothes.
Elaine
And the Winner Is...
Regency
! Seems everyone wants to visit a time period, but not necessarily LIVE there. I guess we've all gotten spoiled by silly things such as indoor plumbing, phones, internet...need I go on?
I really think I'd like to live in the 20's, though - bypassing the Depression yet to come
. I actually enjoy getting back to basics with no technology, televisions, etc. I'm weird, I know.
Thanks for dropping by Red, Emily, and Leanne!

Eras:
I can't decide which era I would choose! Perhaps the late 1800s, for a very, very, very short time!
Say 2/3 hours in the Wild West! Or maybe one evening during the Regency days! I admit it, I'm a wimp
when it comes to my modern conveniences!

Just visiting...
Yep, I'm another one for just visiting and then coming home to my modern comforts,
but as for the actual visit - Regency, yep. Pre-Roman times in England, definitely. Ancient Egypt, yep. And then a quick trip to the future - past the times I'll live through. Interesting topic, Jules. I'd love to see a photo of you in that hat!
