My Harlequin Moment: Tori Carrington

Harlequin Moments

Yikes! Trying to pick a solitary favorite Harlequin memory is like asking us to pick a favorite book. Or favorite son. Or favorite shoes! If you've met us, then you know that we pay the adage "Never mix business with pleasure" absolutely no heed whatsoever. Simply, our business is our pleasure. And when it comes to Harlequin, we have a treasure-trove of cherished memories made over the past ten years since we sold our first book Constant Craving to Temptation. No fair asking us to pick just one!

So which memory do we choose? The day the first sale call came through from editor extraordinaire Brenda Chin? Definitely a life-changing event that will stand out forever. How about the first Harlequin party we attended at the Orlando RWA conference? No, wait! There's the Harlequin party at the 2004 Dallas RWA conference when Isabel Swift and Donna Hayes presented us with pins commemorating the publication of our 25th Harlequin title. Ah, yes. Undoubtedly very special.

Then there are the memories that stand out for different reasons. While the above mark special professional achievements, we have tons of others that are more personal in nature. Like the first time (hmm...and, incidentally, the only time) we went camping with our editor Brenda Chin and her husband Jay.

lake Let me set the scene: We're in Canada's Haliburton Park in September; it's nighttime; the place is deserted - no one even close to being within shouting distance - and very, very quiet. Oh, and rainy. We've just retired to our tent, Brenda and Jay to theirs. A twig snaps nearby. Tony and I stare at each other in the dark. Then we simultaneously move a little farther away from the sides of the tent and closer to each other. If this is going to be it, if we're going to die, we're determined to be together when it happens. "There are no bears," Brenda calls out from her tent. "You guys watch too many horror movies."

Uh huh. Sounded like famous last words to us.

The next year Brenda went out on a solo retreat to the same site under the same deserted circumstances...and there was a bear! It even stole one of her kayak paddles. And she ended up spending a sleepless night locked in her car, probably remembering the year before.

Cross my heart and hope to die, stick...well, you know the rest.

Is anyone else suddenly craving marshmallows?

tavernAh, yes, there are so many memories. Take the night during the NYC RWA conference, for example, when eHarlequin.com treated us all to dinner at a place called Gramercy Tavern. Hey, if the restaurant had the word "tavern" in the name, it couldn't be all bad, right? Wrong. Oh, I'm sure dyed-in-the-wool foodies and French chefs everywhere love the place. But us...well, when we were served, gulp, bone marrow and cow cheeks...let's just say that more than a couple of us kept waiving the hovering waiter over to keep our wine glasses full so we might be able to swallow the next unidentifiable tidbit on our plates (yep, yep, yep, you can dress ‘em up...).

DTCOh! And then there's the time we visited the Harlequin Toronto offices to speak to the DTC group in 2004 and agreed not to embarrass Brenda by talking about our "infidelity" book, even though that same "infidelity" was all over the back cover blurb. Then, when we were signing for the group afterward, we cracked open the books to the steamy sex scenes so the male group members wouldn't have to go hunting for them during their periodic retreats to reacquaint themselves with the product they were selling.

In case you hadn't guessed, we like to have a good time. And when you put us together with others of like mind...well, the end result is the hundreds upon hundreds of photos we have posted on our website of our many adventures. (Some might refer to them as blackmail shots.)

But, ultimately, when all is said and done, one of our most rewarding memories has to be occasion we met the women featured in the More Than Words Volume 3 Anthology. When editor Marsha Zinberg invited us to write one of the stories, we immediately signed on to participate in the phenomenal Harlequin philanthropic program designed to reward exceptional women whose charitable endeavors are truly inspiring.

Kathy SilvertonOur story featured the remarkable efforts of Kathy Silverton of Stitches From The Heart, a charity that donates handmade baby and toddler items to over 450 hospitals and charities across the country. With the help of over 10,000 volunteers, founder Kathy Silverton has shipped over a quarter of a million items to needy and premature babies. (For more info on how you can contribute to Stitches From The Heart, click here.)

Harlequin held a special awards luncheon in New York at The Pierre to honor each of the women featured in the anthology. As fellow author and longtime friend Karen Harper put it, "This was a once in a lifetime event." It truly was.

Proceeds from the sale of this book and the other three anthologies (all four are still available through eHarlequin.com) are reinvested in Harlequin's philanthropic MORE THAN WORDS program. Do you have a magnificent someone you'd like to nominate for next year's grants? Do it now. For more info, click here.

Whatever the season, whatever the reason, we have a decade's worth of superlative Harlequin memories. And we're thankful for each and every one of them. These guys are more than our professional associates...or even our friends, for that matter. They're family. And we love ‘em all.

Now, what kind of trouble can we get into next year...?

Happy Labor Day!

Ah, it's so nice and quiet in our neighborhood. Three-day holidays are excellent for that reason alone. The Friday before you can virtually feel the air vibrate as everyone takes a deep breath and then exhales as one.

After mucho discussion, Tony and I have decided to make bbq baby back ribs today (kebobs came a close second). Can you believe we went the entire summer without making hotdogs and hamburgers? Incredible. Especially since we cook so much on the grill. But our taste tends more toward chicken, steaks and chops. Oh, and if you haven't tried grilling zucchini and eggplant, you don't know what you're missing! I swear, I could have eaten just that all summer. Hmm...I would probably weigh a helluva alot less, too.

Awww...

LOL! Thanks, Tammy. Big, wet, cyber smooches comin' attcha.

So what do you have on tap today? I'm letting my fingers do the walking through my TBR pile. One gripe I do have about holidays is that I can't listen for the UPS truck to pull up with my book orders. Ah, well. Lots of great stuff from which to choose here. Let's see, do I go with Cami Dalton's Pleasure to the Max? (Cami doesn't write nearly fast enough for me! More, woman, more!) Or Rhonda Nelson's Hell-Raiser? Ohhhh! Then there's Susan Andersen's Cutting Loose!

Decisions, decisions...

Awwww

Hi Lori and Tony,

I am still recovering from a dreaded Sinus infection.  I am over medicated and sleep deprived!  So nothing on tap here but to rest and get ready to go back to work tomorrow.  My reading choices are much easier. I am still reading the Blaze books in order. I just started All Tied Up by Alison Kent yesterday  I'll be up to A Stranger's Touch in no time. I really liked You Sexy Thing.  Grace is an unforgettable character.

I actually work for Coats - Coats and Clark who makes Red Heart Yarn (and so many others)  is a division of my company.  One year, the knitters made hats for babies in the hospital.  The project this year is to make scarves for the Special Olympics.  Sadly, I have no talent for this, but many of the ladies I work with do.

I hope you have a great Labor Day and know that whichever book you choose, you will have a great read. Cool

Thanks!

Thanks so much, Amber! What's great about Constant Craving is that we got to see the book with two different covers. The first when it was originally published in the Temptation line. Then again last year when Harlequin reissued it. It's so funny to meet readers who swear they'll never read a category romance come up with a copy of the latter at signings. Of course, you know we send them off with better information, a hug, and a list of category titles they just must check out.

My favorite book of yours

I love the books you guys write together (not to mention that my husband loves to seeme reading them..lol) But I have to say my favorite was Wicked! I think i've read it twice..lol

Hugs!

Oh, Tammy! How awful that you're fighting a sinus infection. Especially at this time of year. Definitely take care of yourself.

I'm in awe of your charitable endeavors. It really is true that one person can make an incredible difference. And you're obviously a shining example of that.

Kathy brought along samples of the teeny-tiny clothing that volunteers knitted, along with diapers that didn't look like they'd fit a Barbie, much less a baby. Obviously, premie wear isn't available in the nursery section of any store. So we loudly applaud her and your much needed efforts.

I used to crochet in my early teens, and tried to take it up again when we got involved with More Than Words, but somehow my fingers kept reaching for a book and my renewed effort never took. So I'm doubly impressed.

Use today to baby yourself, okay? You need and deserve it!

Wicked...

LOL, FrozenPepsi77. I think you'll get a kick out of this: Tony and I try to get in a nice, brisk walk every morning and one of my CDs (yeah, I know, I really need an iPod) is a copy of a techno one I actually burned for our younger son Tim a few years ago. One of my favorite tracks is "I'm wicked and I'm lazy...ohhhh, don't you want to save me?" by the Talking Heads. Great walking music! And mega apropos for the "guy" mentality that currently rules the 20's crowd.

Many of our books are inspired by the music we happen to be listening to at the time we're brainstorming. Our upcoming Nov Blaze RECKLESS is what we envisioned might have had happened if Rick Springfield actually got Jessie's Girl. And RESTLESS in Dec (aka Gauge's book), has the Eagles' Desperado stamped all over it.

Gad. Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me just popped up on our MySpace playlist. Now *that's* a book I can't wait to tackle at some point in the future! What emotion. Now I just have to convince Tony that he also wants to write it...

Oh! You've just GOT to check out the covers for the aforementioned coming releases. They're up on our site at www.toricarrington.net. (We're updating the front page now, but do feel free to click on the drawing button on the top to enter our September drawing for a Movie Madness Gift Basket.)

Walking fingers...

Isn't it the best, Amber? It's like having your own personal bookstore!

Um, I am ashamed to say, however, that my TBR pile is towering at around 70 or so. I keep telling myself I need to stop judging contests so I'll have more time to enjoy the TBR, but then I'll read a fantastic entry and forget all about that. I imagine the rush I feel comes close to what an editor must feel when she fishes a great submission out of the slush pile.

Of course, the most important difference is that I can only play the role of fairy godmother and recommend the entrant to our agent and editor(s), while editors actually get to play god and make a talented someone's dream come true.

Sigh. Can you imagine?

That's fantastic, Amber! Good luck with your first novel. You do know, however, that your TBR pile will procreate while you're not looking, doncha? It happens with every writer. Reading is what inspires us to write, and then once we do, we have so little time to read.

How could we forget to mention THAT?

Hi, Sadhbh! How are you doin', sweetie?

(Pssst, don't let her give you a complex, Amber. We can't read that fast, either. It stil takes me a week to get through a category title...unless I can devote pretty much an unlimited amount of time to a book. Then I can finish one in two to three days. Hell, it takes me two days to read through our galleys, and that's going nonstop while doing battle with the desire to change every last word.)

Yeesh. :::thwapping forehead::: I can't believe we forgot to mention the wonderful people with whom we get to cross paths in our blog entry. From fellow writers to readers...I don't know, we feel so utterly connected to everyone and everything around us when we're in such great company.

Romance does make the world a happier place, doesn't it? Thank god for Harlequin!

I could not possibly name

I could not possibly name one single book that is a favorite--there are too many to choose just one. But if I had to pick one--I love anthologies and when there is an anthology that contains a group of my favorite authors More than Words goes to the top of the pile.

Hello!

Lori and Tony!  So great to see y'all around here!

Love the sort of music ideas you use.  Love Rick Springfield (saw him in concert for the 1st time in Nashville this past Feburary and he ROCKED!!!), and Bonnie Raitt has just the most amazing voice!  I love using songs to help visualize things....  Seal's IF I COULD, LET ME ROLL and WAITING FOR YOU are all great...  (There's just something about his voice!)

I've enjoyed everything that I've read of y'all's.  I really loved SHAMELESS.  (Love the Garth Brooks song by the same name, too.  Cool )

Will pop back in and see what else is happening later!

Anthologies...

Hi, Nancy! Interesting you should bring up anthologies, because something we neglected to mention when talking about our More Than Words novella is that we usually don't take on anthologies as a general rule. It's always been very difficult for us to confine our stories to a certain word length and it's growing increasingly more so, making a novella nightmare material. In fact, it takes us just as long to write a shorter story than a full-length novel. But in the case of A Stitch in Time, we just couldn't pass up the opportunity to give back in some small way.

Psst...we actually ended up writing two completely different stories for our contribution. The first one...well, was scrapped and we had to start from scratch on the second. Something we've never done before. And hopefully never will again.

Meeting artists...

Greetings, Kim! Love your title! Harlequin Historical Curator, indeed. Nifty... (You're doing a great job with the MySpace page. Kudos!)

Unfortunately, no, we've never met any of the artists that have inspired our songs. We may travel widely, but outside writers' conferences, we're not much for large crowds. You're more likely to find us walking a foreign city's streets, enjoying coffee at a sidewalk cafe, or pointing our telescope at the stars that crowd the sky, music always playing in the background.

Okay, Tony just thwapped me. I take the above back. I have met one of the artists that has inspired me the most: Tony. Before immigrating to the U.S., he was a successful drummer for a very popular Greek band. Every now and again he'll play on the set I bought him a few Xmases ago and I'll sit on a chair in front of him, his biggest groupie.

Wistful sigh. There's just something about musicians, isn't there? Musical poets.

TBR piles...

Hi, Christa! Okay, I am officially in awe. 700+ in your TBR pile? Incredible! Can I come over for a visit?

While we have nowhere near that many, we do have separate TBR piles. There are the trade periodicals that pour in monthly, the tall stack of nonfiction works, our growing collection of modern and ancient philosophy tomes in both English and Greek, and then there are the unread sections of the many newspapers we subscribe to. I go through the last pile at least once a week and force myself to keep that no higher than a foot -- except for the Queens NY ones. Those we keep for at least a year so we can slip into Sofie Metropolis' shoes whenever we want. (An old ex-mob guy shooting pigeons from his Queens roof with a rifle? Gotta use it!)

The other piles? Well, let's just say we manuever around them very carefully for fear of physical harm should they topple over. Especially the hardcovers. They always do the most damage!

Terrific moments!

Thanks for sharing with us!! I'm going to have to look for that Rick Springfield book, LOL. I was such a fan as a kid. When he was on TV a few weeks ago doing a live show for one of the morning shows, I was ROTFLMBO. All the women holding signs and screaming "sing Jesse's Girl"  were all in their 40s.  Hmmmm....it was like looking at a group of ....me!

Anyway, thanks! Great blog!!

43 here! And my best friend and I got to see him play live in concert, and OMG....we swooned! My older sister, who had to drive us, was so blase' about the whole thing, LOL!!

And when he was on that morning show, we were in a hotel room and I was singing and dancing, and my DD looked at me and groaned. "Mom, you're scaring me." LOL!!!!  I told her he was just like the Jonas brothers for me.  Tongue out

You lucky dog to see him in concert. This was when MTV actually played videos. And that video was so cool.  I actually had the Rick Springfield album Working Class Dog and we played it until it wore out.  Great memories!  And I meant to tell you I did get my hair chopped off. Six inches and I love my short hair now.  It just hits my shoulders.

64 Club

In life I am sure I have plenty of company in the 64 club.  It was the last year of the Baby Boom.  I just meant on this page because Lori listed all the other authors who are the 65 club with Jodie , but not me.  I am all by myself unless anyone else will admit to being in the 64 club.

Jodie - Yes I saw that my post doesn't make as much sense now that you changed your post. Oh well, i'll still leave mine as is
