My little girl is in Egypt...

  Lisa (R) & friend Heather (L)

My daughter Lisa, who is in Egypt (EGYPT!), posted some of her pictures up on Facebook... and Hoo boy!
Intellectually I knew that she was going to be a long, long way from home ~ on the other side of the world ~ a world away ~ but to see the pictures of her in front of a pyramid?!?
I have no real-life reference.  As a mother, her mother for just over 22 years to see my "little girl" in a place that I cannot even really comprehend... I'm speechless ~ and choked up ~ and so happy and excited for her.
But I miss her and I pray that she is safe, and stays safe.  She's my first little girl ~ although at 5'10", little doesn't really describe her very well.  But she's there and getting ready to have the adventures of a lifetime with her best friend, Heather... God bless and keep them both.

I've put up a couple or three pics on my website here and will add to it over the days to come.

Enjoy!  (At least I can live her adventures vicariously!)

re: My little girl is in Egypt

Oh wow, I am very jealous of your daughter...incredible photos. How long is she in Egypt for?

How exciting

What a great picture. Is your daughter in Egypt for work or is she just traveling the world?

Margie :)

Lisa took her digital camera and she's obviously got some talent... that and she's in clover, so anything she takes a picture of has all her feelings behind it.

She and her friend Heather are living in Cairo right now ~ Heather's sister's boyfriend is Egyptian and owns a café or something and he said that if they need to work to earn some money to travel more, they're more than welcome to work for him.
For now they'll stay around Egypt, but they're also planning on traveling to India and who knows where else... I sure don't!
One of the last times that I spoke to Lisa she said that she may be back in Canada in a couple years... or more.  Sealed

So she is traveling the world

What a great experience for her. But sad for you since it will be a while before you see her. I will pray for Lisa and Heather's protection.

Margie :)

re: Egypt

Oh wow, that's incredibly exciting for her (SO jealous!).  You must miss her a lot...sounds like you have the right supportive attitude, though.

Margie

Thank you so much... it sure adds to my peace of mind.  And I really don't want to worry... or at least *sound* worried.  Undecided

Lady_Amalthea...

thank you!  One does what one can.
When she was wondering aloud if she should return to Edmonton to finish getting her Education degree or travel, I told her "Travel now!"
Personally I believe that there are two levels to schooling ~ learning about life and learning about *something* ~ and that often the first is overlooked to the detriment of personal growth.  So I told Lisa that if she feels the need to travel ~ and I know she does (my dad's gypsy genes kinda missed my generation and moved right down to his grandkids') ~ education is something that she can do at any time, while the opportunity to travel the way that she wants to is often a much more limited proposition.
So I wish her all the best, bite my tongue and pray for her... and rejoice that she's having such a wonderful time.  Laughing

Wow, what a great trip she has planned, Egypt, India.  Sounds like a wonderful time.  Although, I understand about your nerves.  I hope she has a wonderful time.

Cady

Oh, I'm so glad that you supported her choice!

I was in France for 6 weeks almost 2 years ago (spent a lot of time with Sadhbh) and had to drag my pretty-young kids along (which wasn't so bad -- the youngest wants to go back! :) ). But I did it b/c I DIDN'T travel when I was young and was afraid that I never would make time/$$ to do it.  I went to college straight from HS (which I would do again) and then got that first job after college and never had enough $$ and vacation time when single and child-free to do it. I'm all about encouraging young people to travel SAFELY.

I've told dh that when the kids are out of the house, I'd like to sell it for somplace with no yard so that we can travel.

Anyway, I hope that your dd stays safe and has a wonderful time. Tell her a middle-aged American mom is living vicariously through her!

Penn

Cady and Penn

Cady, oh I know... I'm amazed at the places that Lisa and Heather want to see; certainly not places that I would have ever picked!
But what an experience that she's going to come home with ~ home of course being where ever she settles.  She's become a small town girl ~ while travelling to some very BIG cities ~ so I know that she won't settle close to us.  She absolutely loved the Yukon Territories and will very likely return there... eventually.  Laughing

And Penn I kinda wanted to travel when I was younger, but my dad was with the Air Force and we moved a LOT up until the time I was 8.  But even when we moved to Edmonton, my parents ~ uh, my dad ~ had trouble staying still.  LOL
I figure that's why my sibs and I are pretty content to stay where we are; but with Lisa traveling to Egypt and India, and points beyond, and with 2 of my sister's children out and about ~ her older son is traveling South America; Chris wants to be down there for at least a year.  And Marianne's youngest daughter is in New Zealand.  And they're just the beginning I think.  Surprised

What a great trip your

What a great trip your daughter has planned Kathy. I'm happy for her. What beautifull pictures she's taken.

Kathy D

Hi Kathy...

Yeah... I'm so proud of her... and happy for her.
She called the other day and she's sounding so up and, satisfied.  She's got two girls that she's teaching English too; she's enjoying all of it pretty much I think.  She took two years towards getting her teaching degree and she's great with kids so it's a good match... plus she's able to earn money with which she can travel some more.  Wink

RE: MY LITTLE GIRL IS IN EGYPT

Do you ladies know what was difficult?  It was difficult seeing me sister divorce the man she had imported from Eire (both of them are 'purebred'), to marry a MUCH YOUNGER guy she met in an online "Arabian Cafe".  A student from Palestine going to college in Jordan! WHILE WE WERE AT WAR! I'm not stupid.  I know the entire family was followedl  Me ~ a U.S. Marine living in an area in the States that has more people from the Middle-East than actually LIVE in the Middle-East!(Me neighborhood isn't called "Little Iraq" for nothing)!

However, what Katherine (my sis) and Memut often talked about were their travels.  To the Dome of the Rock, the Via Dolorosa, Golgatha, Medina, where Moses is buried, the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, etc., is fascinating.  If one does his/her world history with an open mind, he/she will find that the beginning of humanity and antiquity began in what we now label Modern-Day Iraq.

While I realize that folks from several different countries, and with diverse political views meet here (and one finds it prudent NOT to rock the boat), suffice it to say that I was heart-broken towards the beginning of the present Iraqi War as the United States, along with United Nations backed countries, destroyed the Museum of Antiquities in Baghdad.  Let me try to get through to the smug here that it wasn't the history of Saddam Hussein or modern-day Iraq was destroyed, but the history of humankind (for that general area, it is believed by most, that the Garden of Eden was, and humanity began.  Also, the Wise Men that found the Baby Jesus were Iraqi astrologers.

Marty...

... that's heartbreaking!  War is not only destructive in human terms, but when we, as people, lose something so basic to our history, that just brings to mind all that's been lost through the centuries due to man's inability to see past the end of his nose sometimes.

My daughter and her friend visited Alexandria a couple of weeks back... just to think of all the history that was once housed there, never again to be found.
Once we can appreciate our past, as a whole, then I think a lot of what troubles the world will be a thing of the past.

RE: ME DAUGHTER IS IN EGYPT

Can you only IMAGINE what wonderful manuscripts must have been in the library at Alexandria?  At that time in history, the "brainiacs" of the world would converge upon Alexandria to study.  And CLEOPATRA!  Today, she's made out to be a whore, but then she was a patriot that loved her country, and she spoke seven languages!

I can only imagine...

... and I'm sure that it comes nowhere near the truth.
The countries in the Middle East have so much of humanity's history that it's a shame that there's not more care taken to keep it for future generations.

I sincerely doubt that I'll ever have a chance to experience any of the countries that she's going to, or that you have, and I'm a little envious.  I've read so much over the years about these places and to actually be there ... well, suffice it to say that would be the experience of a lifetime ~ minus the fighting of course!
