My Pre-Christmas Treat by Sharon Archer

I’ve just spent a fabulous couple of days up north with one of my best friends, Anna Campbell.  That’s her floating in the swimming pool! As soon as I’d taken this photo, I leapt in, too! Anna writes amazing historical romances, wonderful, rich stories with complex characters. Smile I've got one in my Christmas stocking!

The visit was a great opportunity to get together, talk writing, laze around in the Queensland humidity, bob around in her swimming pool and walk along the beach front.

And it was also an opportunity to check out unfamiliar shops. At home, I’m an indifferent shopper. Get to town, get the item, get home – that’s me. A whirlwind shopper!

But there’s nothing quite like being out with a friend, and away from your usual environment, to give shopping a whole new lure. The clothes are different. You’ve got someone to consult - and in my case, to stop you from buying anything hideous! Your mindset is more relaxed... and perhaps your purse strings are too!

Mmm, maybe that’s not such a good thing! Tongue out

Anyway, lucky me because I’ve come home with some fabulous buys. One of them is this gorgeous red shirt – perfect for Christmas. I’ve already worn it to one Christmas lunch and it’s going to the family Christmas dinner on the 25th.

We decorate our homes and tables and trees for Christmas so tell me what you'll be wearing just for fun for Christmas. I rather fancy a pair of those cute reindeer antlers myself... maybe next year!

I feel like Mrs Claus when I wear the red shirt - albeit a very summery Mrs Claus! Cool - so I thought I’d giveaway a copy of my latest release to one of our commenters.

with love and best wishes for a safe and happy Christmas

Bathing beauty!

Who is that mysterious mermaid in this blog? Snort! Sharon, thank you for bringing back lovely memories of your visit. Don't we look happy in that photo of the two of us? You're welcome any time, my friend! And you're such fun to shop with! It's been even hotter since you visited - I think you timed the trip to perfection. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas - you'll look gorgeous. I can confirm that the red shirt is absolutely spectacular! And thank you for saying those lovely things about my books!

I was lucky enough to have

I was lucky enough to have lunch with Sharon on November 30th and the first thing I said was, 'wow, that shirt really suits you.' and she confessed to her shopping fest! I love shopping on holidays cos I hate it all other times

Unless

Unless I'm in the bookstore, I HATE shopping.  Most especially during the holiday's.  WAY too many people, all trying to get to the same stuff, can barely walk, move or anything...I hate it.

I'm glad you had fun, though.

Shopping for Christmas

I dislike shopping for clothes at any time of the year but since it is a necessity I by blue jeans and denim shirts.Smile  That's just about all I wear now that I no longer have to dress for teaching.  If I have to dress up I wear black slacks and a colorful shirt. Tongue out

Thank you! I must say that shirt does feel a million dollars!  As a person who has made more than her fair share of shopping faux pas, it's great when I do buy something that really earns its coat hanger!  All that AND it's a drip dry no-iron one - a big plus!

Book Shop Delights

Oooo, Shelli, I love book shops too! And I have a very very soft spot for stationery shops as well. But as for other shopping - not big on my list of fun things to do.  This time of the year the shops can be so crowded, can't they?  I like to get into town early, beat the rush and be home for morning tea.

Denim Fashions

Hi Ellen

Where would we be without our jeans!  With polar fleece in winter and cotton-t's in summer. Actually, while we were travelling in the far north of Australia on the motorbike my main fashion thing was a pair of denim pedal-pushers and a coloured cotton singlet with one of my husband's old business shirts over the top. It meant I always had sun protection and I could stay cool at the same time.

A good pair of basic black slacks is so versatile in the wardrobe - I'll be taking mine out for lunch tomorrow with that red shirt!

Purrrrrfect!

I love the shirt.  I can even imagine myself wearing it, albeit in a bigger size!

I basically write down the grocery sales and hit the "best buys" of the group.  I stock up on stuff on sale not only for food, but for wedding/anniversary/birthday/Christmas gifts as well.  I especially love one gift I have doled out (but it hasn't been opened yet) this year:  it was regularly over $100, it's on sale this week for $80, and I bought it months ago for $30 less a $6 employee discount (my son's), totally $24.  I bought five of them:  two for me, one for the above-noted girlfriend, and two for wedding/shower gifts.  The recipients will be amazed that they got this totally cool yet useful gift that cost the earth, but my girlfriend will know I didn't pay anything near that price for it, as we have $20 (or so) limits on our gift giving.  (Yes, I'll tell her the deal, as we both live for "deals"!)

When I find clothing I absolutely love, like a pair of comfortable yet low-heeled shoes (I'm 5'10") that will fit my orthotics inside, I go back and buy them in other colours.  Years ago I found hush-puppy-like shoes:  I bought four pairs in black, three pairs in navy blue, and two pairs in chocolate brown.  I'm down to my last pair of each and really wish they still made them!  I think the same would hold true for your red top:  if it came in other colours too, I would try on each one to see what else I could buy!

Party snag

I've hit a party snag, this year.

Usually, because it's wintry, I'll wear smart black trousers or a long skirt with a pretty long-sleeved top of some sort to anything vaguely posh, but this year, because the first party of the season is at our dancing class, I need something that I can dance in, too.

And can I find a top that's pretty/glittery/age-suitable/dancing-suitable? Can I heck! All the pretty/glittery stuff shows far too many acres of bare flesh to be safe for dancing and the rest is either too staid for a party or will be too hot for dancing.

Looks like it's going to have to be a short-sleeved, v-necked black T with a sports bra underneath, which will be eminently practical but not quite as delectable as I was hoping for my first semi-official outing as a member of the dancing fraternityFrown

But I've got DH's outfit in mind... black trousers, black shirt, white tie and white braces (suspenders for the US?) Unfortunately, he's a bit shy, so I'll have to persuade him that the 1920's Speakeasy look will fit in with everyone else dressing up and making an effort.Wink

Book store

I can't resist a book store.  I actually got my husband to agree to plan a vacation around this one particular book store that had a book I wanted but would not ship it to me.

Shelli

Beautiful shirt

Love the red shirt, Sharon.  I like to wear a silk, red plaid blouse on Christmas day with a reindeer necklace that I bought at a boutique probably twenty years ago.  It's made from clothes pins and is adorable.  Once I bought it, I took note of all the doodads they used to make it and promptly had each member of my family, including mother, sister and nieces making their own.  I notice I'm the only one still wearing mine.  Hmm... I wonder where there's went?

Shopping? Where?

Count me in on the shopping with a friend. I get into more trouble shopping with my friend Barb than ever. But it's great fun, isn't illegal, immoral, or fattening. mostly. In the days before having my own family, I started Christmas shopping in September, enjoying saving up things for my mother and father and friends. Now, I don't have the time at that time of the year.

But I've recently decided not to be in such a hurry with everything and I hope that evolves into my shopping time, too.

I love the red blouse,

I love the red blouse, Sharon, it s such a vibrant, energizing color. Shopping is so much more fun when it's done with a friend (and what a nice picture of you and your friend). If you need me as I witness, I'll vouch for the invite. Wink

I have a red, 3/4 length sleeve, velvet blouse and black skirt I will be wearing for christmas this year. I needed a red blouse for a Christmas concert the first weekend of December. I found this outfit on sale (yeah), but the skirt was not long enough. So I paired it up with a full length black skirt for the concert, now I will get to wear the whole outfit.

to shop or not to shop...

Yeah... I'm a not to shop person.  I like going to the shops but only when it's not crowded, I don't do well in crowds and at this time of year - I last about 1 hour and then that's it... off home for this little black duck.  However... I have a daughter who thinks that "shopping" is an all day outing where you meet people, have coffee, then shop, then have lunch, then meet some more people, take in a movie (with nibbles) and then buy more things (and of course, I'm the slave who has to carry all her purchases!).  She is teaching me that there is more to this shopping thing then just go, buy come home.  (and she's only 13!!!!!  Hate to see what she'll be like when she's earning her own money and not spending mine Smile)

I'll admit I have to be psyched up to hit the shops a lot of the time but I do prefer going during the day when everone is at work/school and not too many people are around.  (I'm also like this when I visit theme parks - waiting in line for a rollercoaster - not my fav thing to do... in fact waiting in general, not my fav thing to do!)

Kudos to all you shopaholics.  You have far more stamina then impatient lil' ol' me!

I'll have to wait and see

what the temps will be like before I can decide on what I'll wear for Christmas.  We've had it cold with enough snow to shut most roads down, and we've had it warm enough for shorts and T-shirts.  Aaaaah.  Life in Tennessee!

I DO NOT do stores after Thanksgiving whenever I can help it.  Grocery is the main thing I'll hit.  If something happens and I don't have all my shopping done before Thanksgiving, I'll either give gift cards or shop online.  I don't mind the number of people, I mind when they act like they have no brain or common courtesy.  Spending extra money to not have to deal with the 'crap', is TOTALLY worth it!

Merry/Happy Christmas!

Thank you, Laney!

You've got a great  shopping system going there with your bargain hunting!  And with buying multiples of those shoes.  Of course, it's tough when you get to the pointy end and you're down to your last pairs!  Maybe there's another shoe style lurking out there waiting for you to find it!

Party Snag

Josie, it's so hard to find what you want when you're shopping with something specific in mind.  I do my best shopping more by accident than good management - hence the great time I had when I went with Anna. We'd gone to drop books at the library, walk along the beach front, find somewhere nice for lunch... and voila, I came home with three marvellous tops!

Your dh is going to look spiffing at the dance!  I hope you find the perfect top before the big night!

BTW we've been to a couple of rock 'n' roll social evenings now and the best tip I've had is to take a fan if you have one!

Oh, a red velvet blouse!  Sounds fabulous. And I'm a real fan of 3/4 length sleeves - so elegant.  It sounds like a great buy!

Actually, there are quite a few of us going to look very festive in our red tops for Christmas.

The Shopping Gene

Lucy, your daughter must get that shopping gene from her dad - definitely not from you!  So, um, maybe you should be sending him out to do the pack-horse thing for her!  Wink

I wonder if our reaction to shopping/queueing crowds depends on how big or small our personal space is.

Tennessee Weather

Wow, April!  Tennesse weather sounds like a real challenge. Packing for a holiday there would mean being prepared for absolutely anything and everything!

Shopping in crowds can be tough, can't it? I can't imagine being enticed to one of those post-Xmas sales where the shoppers start queueing at the doors hours before the opening.  Surprised

I Love Shopping!

I might be in the minority but I love shopping for just about anything and just about anyone.Kiss I even love Christmas shopping especially when I think I've found the perfect gift for someone.

My three sisters and our mother have a tradition of all buying something new to wear on Christmas Day - this year I've bought a very pretty maxi dress (my first!) so I'm hoping for a hot Aussie Christmas. My husband will accuse me of wearing a tent but I think it's a wise purchase as I know I'll eat too much and a maxi dress is the perfect disguise.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, safe (and well-dressed) Christmas.

The Happy Shopper

While I'm not a keen shopper, Emily, I do absolutely agree that finding that perfect gift for someone is very satisfying!

And what a lovely tradition to buy a new outfit for wearing on Christmas Day. I'm picturing your maxi dress as a beautiful, long, flowing garment that will be comfortable and eminently practical - and nothing like a tent!  I'm sure you'll look superb!

Oh yes

Oh yes, it was actually a great book store, one like you see on tv, with comfy couches and chairs and rugs on the floor, but owned by mom and pop, not a corporation.  Love the smell of those type of places.   Actually, lol, I had read the book before, it was by Ru Emerson, but I didn't OWN it, lol.

Shelli

Gorgeous shirt, Sharon

And great idea, going shopping with friends!

I tend to go with my mini fashion adviser - the stylish, girly gene in our family bypassed me and she got a double dose. She's brutally honest ("Mum, you can't wear that because it makes you look a bit fat") but she also picks out things I would never choose for myself and they look great.

Course, if I buy something for me, I have to buy something for her as well. And her tastes, um, run on the expensive siede. My husband is really dreading when she becomes a teen Wink

Fashion Advice on Tap

How cool to have a pint sized "Trinny and Suzanne" in the house, Kate!  Alas the stylish girly gene bypassed me too - I got the tomboy gene... or maybe that should be a tomboy jean!  One of the best things I ever did to help me with my dress-sense was I had my "colours" done.  That made me much braver about shopping for clothes and means that I make far less glaring faux pas these days.
