As I've made mention on my author site blog, I'm not buying any new books this year and am reading instead from my massive TBR pile. (Yes, it's over 1000, but I have no idea of the true number. I'm scared to find out!) I am adding everything new that I want to my Amazon wish list, then doing some heavy duty wishing that family and friends take advantage of that list come gift giving occasions.
I finished reading one book the first week of the year, and I've started two more (am loving both, though neither is a romance; I admit to reading primarily outside of the genre), but now I'll be squeezing in my RITA books that arrived yesterday. I didn't enter anything into the contest this year, so my judging packet contained a mix of YA, novellas, and short contemporaries.
Best part, the bulk are Harlequin / Silhouette releases!
I closed my eyes earlier today and grabbed the first one, and am going to see how many pages I can get through while my grandson naps. He's 9 months old, a cutie-pie handful, and I've been keeping him this week while my son and d-i-l's regular nanny is away dealing with a family emergency.
Let me just say, I have a totally newfound respect for authors who write with little ones around. I know if this were a regular thing, I'd find a workable solution, but since it's been just a week out of time, I've given myself permission to get down on the floor and play all day!

Great Idea
I love the idea of creating an Amazon wish list then passing it to family. Heck, I'd carry it with me for those times we stop in Borders on impromptu and I'm wandering aimlessly, trying to recall which books I'd wanted to buy.
Good luck getting through your pile. A thousand?! That makes me feel better about the two dozen or so I haven't read yet.

I have a library plug-in on my blog where I'm starting to catalog the books taking over my house, but I've only input around 130 or so!
Books taking over house
Ok...Thats a visual. I'm picturing you navigating between very large stacks of books that reach to the ceiling.
Seriously, I have no hope of reading only from my TBR because there are too many great books coming out every month. Instead, I'm shooting for reading 10 more books than I purchase every month. I have a spreadsheet to track this every month. I use the same spread sheet for purchases and reads. Then I pivot table the data so I can get a nice little chart. I love excel.

I am hoping to read from my tbr pile first then maybe buy some new books but I know it will be hard for me especially with all the new books coming out.

Well, I pre-ordered about a dozen books by my auto-buy authors back in December, so I do have those new ones to look forward to sometime this year, LOL!
Lots of books!!!
That is a lot of books. I haven't even bothered to count. I really don't want to know. I just make myself happy when I consolidate multiple containers into one.

Sounds to me like we all do more book buying than reading. Maybe we should form a group like AA. Book Buyers Anonymous. Any time we're in Borders staring at the bargain book display, we get on the phone and call a sponsor.
"You can do this. Just set it down. I know it's a hard cover and it's only $5.99, but you don't even like Sidney Sheldon...."

Goals and Challenges
You need to join Cady's challenge. She started it last year asking people to read from TBR PILE and many people took her up on it. She asked in another thread here what people's goals and challenge's are for this year and my goal #1 was reading from the TBR. I just cataloged ONLY the downstairs books in the TBR and have 387....that does not count the anthologies which I am still struggling to catalog.
I am looking to get some of your books as I have read wonderful things about them here on the boards. I also think writing with little ones would be quite a challenge but your DS and DIL will be picking up the little one soon and your peaceful normal chaos again will reigh. LOL

Yes I am a readalholic and I don't want the 12 step program!!!
It's getting more manageable
It's getting more manageable now that I'm inputting everything into the Now Reading library plugin on my blog. Those books are on a specific shelf, so I know what I've catalogued. I probably should set a goal about finishing that here soon, LOL!
Lori, LOL on Sydney Sheldon. I'm so bad about doing stuff like that. How much have I spent on books that I will never read!
Okay, who is Cady and where is her challenge?
Amazon Wish List
I love the Amazon Wish List Alison! I have one set up on the Chapters website, and my fiancee actually told people to buy from it for me on my birthday last year. I can access it from the store when I am there. Borders must have one for the US readers.
Cady is a teammate of mine, so you can access her from my friends list.

I used to just saved things in my shopping cart like a dummy. Having the list makes so much more sense!
Book Buyers Anonymous
My question is who has enough control to be a sponsor? I've got to admit that if someone called me with that kind of deal. I would probably ask what other books they had. I don't think I would do very well as a sponsor.

I don't think we have a problem, we don't need any 12 step programs lol! But if you were really serious, a sponsor would have to be someone that doesn't read at all... but in the end, to be in a program you need to admit that you have a problem, and I am not ready to take that step!

My husband is my sponsor.
My husband is my sponsor. Every time a box arrives from Amazon he yells (teasingly, of course!), "Stop buying books!"

LOL, you're right. I can imagine myself saying, "Ooh, only $5.99? Pick one up for me!"

Impressed by your determination
I don't think I could do it.. not buy a book all year. I am trying to be good and not purchase any new books while still living down under but that will only be for 4 1/2 months.
I brought so many books back with me I'll never be able to finish them all. That isn't counting the numberless book in my TBR pile behind me on the floor. (Living as an expat means not enough bookcases. :) )

I don't think i can *not*
I don't think i can *not* buy anything new this year. But I have become far more particular about what I'm willing to spend buxs on in the last couple of months, and I'm using the library more. I definitely want to make a dent in my tbr pile, this year though. I'll go with a minimum target of 1-2 per month.

You're very, delusional--- er..... kind to say so, Alison. lol. thank you. But I'm not even close. It's the optical illusion of teeny-tiny photo combined with bright red top. lol. Dee is the other half of that photo, but I cut her @ss out. lol. (Now watch her come over here.)
Aurelene-- I'm always surprised when I see recent releases at Goodwill/the UBS. As a writer it makes me sad, but as a reader it's great to get a bargain. And who knows I might find an author that I wouldn't have taken a chance on otherwise.

Oh, you are so right. I find lots of gifts at the discount tables Borders and Barnes and Noble. It is a weakness - no an addiction - no it is the smell of ink on paper....oh. nevermind. I just need speed dial to a sponsor!

Oh and this Friday is a good free book
I have already ordered 30 (yicks) books from eharlequin this month. Thanks to Lorie I got my discount (just so I can tell my husband how much I saved). Have another order ready to go on Friday morning though. I have already read the book, but want to give this one as a gift.

OMG! I so needed this a few weeks ago. A store had just clearanced their stock and I got first pick over it. The books were only fifty cents. I spent seventeen dollars. You do the math. I will go on the defensive and say that not all of the books that I bought were for myself. I did give some away to friends, but only because I already had a copy and didn't want to lend mine to them.
