My son's needle phobia

Today my son (14 1/2 y.o.) goes to the local shots clinic for his last two immunization shots until he's out of college.  May I just say, he is less than pleased about getting these shots? He has a huge needle phobia.

I don't like needles either (I don't know many people who do) but it strikes me as comical to see this big (he's taller than me), tough (too cool for his shades) teenager reduced to a wide-eyed kid when they break out the needles. The same guy who has perfected the art of rolling his eyes at his mother and filling his voice with disdain for my parental ignorance (which I developed apparently about the same time he learned everything at age 13) is suddenly not so cocky anymore...

He was at the doctor's office a couple weeks ago for a wellness checkup and they drew blood from his finger. As the nurse was explaining what she was going to do, she demonstrated how she would squeeze his finger and draw off a few drop into a tube for the sample.  My ds flinched away from the tube and cried, "Wait, wait, wait!  I'm not ready!"

The nurse shook her head patiently and said, "This isn't the needle. It's just a tube."

When they were done with the blood drawing, he said in an oh-so-concerned voice, "Is there anything else during this appointment that is going to poke me?"

I had to laugh.  I'm no fan of needles either, but I've learned to suck it up and get stuck. In fact, I give blood regularly. I guess it is one of those things you have to learn to deal with (and realize it really doesn't hurt that much).  Some day, I hope my needle-phobic kid will give blood with me.

Meantime, wish him luck today! (And me too...) Tongue out

Needles--yuke!

Beth--I am a needle phobic from way back! I still can't watch the needle coming towards me or into me. Embarassed I have never fainted getting a needle but my dd has. She is grown up now with a baby of her own so she tries to be brave. It's not easy.

I feel for your ds and you watching the process.

Hugs and good luck.

Mary

I can certainly sympathize

I can certainly sympathize with anyone who is needle phobic but I come by mine in a devastating way --- rabies shoots as a 5 year old. Yell However they can draw blood from me (at least I've learned to tolerate that).Surprised

Oh Beth ....

sending needle bravery vibes out to your son

my cousin faints dead away at the sight of a needle ... even one that's not aimed at him!

((Ellen)) .. yes indeed those shots I think would put a life long fear into anyone .... when we were kids, my brother was bitten my a local mutt ... thankfully the mutt could be quarantined and everything turned out fine, otherwise my brother would have had to face the same treatments ... so scarey

Unfortunately in my case

Unfortunately in my case (and my older brother's) the dog could not be found.  Besides needles it has left me with a fear of dogs also (unless they are pets of people I know).

Ellen!!

Oh, Ellen!  Ouch!  I think I'd be pretty terrified of needles after that myself!  Belated hugs to you!

Shots update...

Well, he survived like a trooper.  I took him to Chili's for lunch first to take his mind off it.  Unfortunately we had to wait for like 45 minutes before they called him back.  He got one shot in each arm and took two Tylenol before we even left the building.  Then he went to Blockuster to rent a video game so...he's doing just fine!

I think it would be fun to write a hero who is Alpha through and through, tough as nails... who has a fear of something like needles or worms or something... LOL.  I could say he was inspired by my son!

Happy Wednesday!

PS- Hope y'all can come out to the SRS chat tonight! (Wednesday July 9th)  I'll give away a copy of one of my backlist books to one lucky chatter!

Ta for now, BethLaughing

ROFL .... fearful hero

well, there's Indiana Jones and his fear of snakes!  ..... I thought that was hilarious  :)   ...

I love it when an alpha hero has a vulnerability  ....  in a Heidi Betts' Desire, her hero was afraid of closed in spaces ... so when the power went out while he and the heroine were in the elevator, the heroine kissed him to prevent a panic attack ... that lead to some spicey action!

glad to hear DS was a trooper ... hopefully by tomorrow the whole experience will have been totally forgotten

I shouldn't laugh, but I am....

He's going to grow up into someone like my DH, who had to leave the room if someone else is getting a needle. My best friend had to be the one to hold me when I got my epidural, LOL!

I do sympathize, though. I'm not too fond of them, but I get blood drawn every 2 weeks to measure the level of blood thinners in my body. I'm old hat at it now, but I still can't watch! And look out if they lift the gauze and I'm still bleeding....BLECH!

So, how did MOM do?

Mom did fine.  Much better than when he was a baby.  Seeing his little face scrunch up in pain and betrayal when he felt that needle (when he was a baby) killed me.

Yesterday was a breeze compared to that!

Great to see you at the chat last night!
