Here's a snapshot of the glamorous life of being a writer. (insert tongue in cheek here
)
This has been one of those crazy weeks where I've gotten lots and lots of stuff done, but I don't have a lot to show for it in my current WIP, PROTECTING THE SOCIETY PRINCESS.
Don't get me wrong, I got a respectable amount of work done on the book, but I was hoping to get ahead of schedule this week. I didn't have to teach any this week. The holidays are coming, and though we have no big travel plans, they're, well, the holidays, and they'll require some time and commitment from me. And next week, I'm traveling home to Missouri to help out my family because my dad is having some major back surgery. I'll take my notes and my Alpha-Smart (a portable word processor for those who might not have heard of one--lighter than a laptop, and can only be used for writing, not connecting online) with me, and I'll try to get a few pages written, but I don't expect it will be a lot. Since I don't live that close to my family, when I do get to see them, I naturally want to spend time with them. Plus, I told my mom to use me while she had me--to keep her company at the hospital, cook meals and keep the house, help with Dad, whatever. Who knows, I may be too tired to write.
So, there's my motivation. And usually that's all I need to be productive. But let's talk Murphy's Law here.
When I need to be my busiest is when everything else usually surprises me and has to be done ASAP. So, beyond writing a chapter, here's some of what I did this week.
1. My AA's arrived for my April 2010 book, TAKEDOWN, and had to be returned to my editor this week (AA's = Author Alterations, basically, galleys of the final, print-ready draft of my book--these have been through editing and copyediting and production set-up, then they go back to the author for one final read-through, proofread, and I note any typos or minor corrections that still need to be made--this is where the English teacher in me shines, catching commas, etc. Minor, but necessary stuff. You'd be surprised, as many times as the ms gets read--by me, by my editor, by a copy editor, by me again--invariably a few things still don't get caught until the AA stage)
2. Brainstormed promotion ideas with my CP. We're on a committee together for my writer's group, the Prairieland Romance Writers, to try to rework how our chapter can support its pubbed authors and offer programs beneficial to them. Because of the IRS, a lot of what we've been doing for the past 15 years will have to be changed. This turned into a daily multiple email discussion.
3. Paid bills. Grocery shopped. Did laundry. Gave the dog her meds. You know, real-life stuff.
4. Drove to my son's college campus an hour away to pay a bill in person that I didn't know was due this week because well, he didn't tell me until the day before it was due. That conversation went something like,"Mom, did you know that my blah, blah, blah was due tomorrow or I can't blah, blah, blah next semester?" <sigh> I took him and his roommate out to lunch, too, so actually it was a fun half a day for me, getting some time to see and talk with him in person.
5. Shopped for my hubby's birthday this weekend. Baked a cake. (Haven't frosted it yet, that's on today's agenda)
6. Blogged on the Intrigue Authors Blog. Twice. (Thanks to Joanna Wayne for switching dates with me next week after I found out I'd be on the road or at the hospital)
And on and on. So you see, writing books for a living isn't just about the writing. There are many other responsibilities that go along with it--many, you can plan for and schedule in, and many more are surprises you just have to deal with while still finding the time to write.
After all, I don't get paid for any of that except the writing. Well, I got a hug from my son. And that's pretty rich payment indeed.
So, what are some of the things keeping you busy besides work?
Since my December book, BEAUTY AND THE BADGE, features KCPD detective hero, Kevin Grove, I thought I'd have a special giveaway today. To one lucky poster, I'll send all 4 of my Precinct: Brotherhood of the Badge books--the miniseries where Kevin first appeared as a supporting character--the gruff, by-the-book cop who finally captured the killer that the Kincaid brothers had been hunting. (sort of Tommy Lee Jones to Harrison Ford in THE FUGITIVE

Sending positive healing vibes...
...to your dad for his surgery and to you and your mom (and family in general) for whatever it is you need at this time--strength, peace, etc.
What's kept me busy this week is fur kid health issues (including $urgery) and the emotional and financial stress that's gone along with it. *Headdesk* I'm really glad this work week is coming to an end, believe me.
Please don't enter me in the draw; I have the books.
Take care and happy b-day to your hubby too.

nothing important
I've reached the point in my life where nothing really keeps me busy.
I am retired, I have no kids, my parents are no longer around and the only one I have to deal with is me. So I read, go to the post office for mail, go to the grocery store for groceries, go out to eat with friends and once a year I take a really long trip somewhere (this year I went to PA and NY), then I take some trips to visit friends nearer home, read, read, take care of the house and yard, read, and when I want to do nothing I do nothing.
But the most important thing is that I'm happy with my life as it is.
Oh yeah I spend time on the computer and read.
December 2008 MEMBER of the MONTH!
A true teacher is a person who, at the end of the school day, still likes children!
Hi Julie
Daily life goes on whether we intend to write or not. My family is really supportive of me but because I write at home they think calling or stopping by is a reason to remind me to take a break. Usually they call or stop by right after I've taken a break. lol
My mom is 79 and has to call at least 4 times a day and sometimes more. My brother and his 2 sons live with her but it seems the older she gets, the less she likes to be alone. I, on the other hand, thrive on bing alone with no interruptions. I can read, write, eat or sleep, go for walks or a drive, whatever, whenever. At least, that's the premise.
I was just starting to write this morning when my youngest son called. Laid-off for the winter. Wants to move home with his 7 months pregnant girlfriend! Oh well, what do you do? At least if they're here I don't have to worry about them not eating.
My seconf son is sick with the flu at the moment. He's finally got the fever and vomiting under control but refuses to go to a doctor so I left my car for them. The head gasket went in his. If he gets worse his girlfriend will make sure he gets to a doctor.
Other than that and the fact that it is Friday the 13th, what else could go wrong?
Oh, yeah! I have a baby kitty, 3 months old, and she likes to walk on my keyboard. She also crawls from there into my arms, once she has my attention, and falls asleep, leaving me only one hand to type with. Sometimes that's okay but when I'm really on a roll, I need both hands because the words are coming too fast. If I move her or disturb her sleep she yowls at me. I've named her Sassy, appropriate I thought.
Other than the usual, dishes, laundry and cleaning and dusting, things there's never an end to, my day goes by pretty fast. Can't ignore family but the housework just doesn't get done if I write!
Have a great day! The sun is shining brilliantly here and all is well. TTYL

Ah, yes, our furry children
Kea--thanks so much for the good thoughts--I know my family will appreciate it.
I know what you mean about the expense of caring for a pet! Our dog Maxie is dealing with some health issues--she's 13, so part of it has to do with aging and is inevitable, but she also has developed a seizure disorder (probably a brain tumor, my vet suspects, to go along with other benign tumors) that has required a trip to the emergency vet's office at 4 a.m., constant supervision and some experimentation to get the right blend of meds to stop the seizures and prevent neurological damage. I paid more to take her to the ER than it cost me to go!
But, knock on wood, she's into her second seizure-free week now. And, other than losing a lot of her hearing and sleeping more, she seems her old self. She'll chase squirrels, bark at the UPS man, mooch treats and keep me company all day long.

I'm envious of all your traveling and reading time. That's what retirement should be about--getting to do the things YOU want to do.
I know my parents have sure enjoyed retirement. I think they're busier now than they were when they each worked full-time. But they're busy doing things they love.
My dad has already made plans to be up and at 'em enough after his surgery to go to Kansas City for a Mannheim Steamroller concert with my brother and his family. And we just saw them last month here in Nebraska to go to a football game and see my son play in the band. My dad has been in a lot of pain, though. Hope the surgery does the trick!

Yes, that real-life stuff happens every day, doesn't it? How comforting for your son and girlfriend to know they have a home to go to in times of need. And I hope your second son is feeling better!
How's that book coming? I sent in my AA's this morning, and now I'm having a hard time transitioning from that book into the one I'm currently writing.
But the day's not half over yet. I'll get something more done on the ms!

Writing in the midst of life...
While I'm driving these days, I'm listening to the CD-version of the best-of '08 RWA National conference. Eric Maisel's lecture on creativity was particularly thought-provoking for me. I'm about 1/4 of the way through my Nanowrimo WIP, a contemporary short romance, and am working on what Eric calls "the perfect writing plan" which is to write every day. No specifics about word count, page count, time length, how many scenes, etc. Simply, "I will write every day."
It's birthday month here in my house, which means a bit more socializing, and that delicate balancing act of celebrating without inducing family-wide diabetes. (I love to avoid writing by baking!) But yesterday, after a very busy day, instead of my usual "I'm too tired to write," avoidance, I turned on my AlphaSmart Neo, crawled under the covers and got a couple of paragraphs written. Just enough to keep the story alive and move it forward a smidge.
Write every day. I can do that. Cheers, everyone!

Life happens
That is my favorite phrase. You will be rolling right along thinking everything is great and WHAM, life happens. My family has finally all got well, knock on wood. My father is still in a rehabilitation center though, I think they will be letting him out soon because there isn't much more they can do for him. They wanted to build up his strength but it's just not happening. He has so many health problems. My mother is 88 and she has been helping my brother build a new front porch on their house with a ramp for my dad. She really shouldn't be doing it, but she is very stubborn. If you try suggesting she is too old for these things, she will let you know in no uncertain terms that she isn't dead yet. She is actually in pretty good shape for her age. Thank God. It would be hard to deal with both of them being down at the same time. I hope your dad's surgery goes really well and I hope you enjoy the time spent with your family. Welcome back to Missouri.

My HI is coming along quite nicely. It's now at 50471 words, 848 words so far today. H loves h, and vice versa, stalker has captured her and I've just allowed H to figure out who it is. Now they need to rescue her. Not much farther to go. Thanks for the continued interest.

I love that philosophy! I know when I'm in the middle of a book, like you, I need to do something on it every day, even if it is just a couple of paragraphs--just to keep the story fresh in my head so that when I do sit down with some real time to write, I'm already focused, and don't waste time trying to get into my story.

The only thing out of the
The only thing out of the ordinary I've been doing is enjoying the fall weather. Usually, by now we have a foot (or more) of snow.
What has kept me busy
Power cuts and a silent phone has kept me busy this week (the joys of living in the countryside). It snowed a lot a couple days ago and the heavy snow made trees and branches fall on the telephone and power lines. Whenever the power came back I rushed to heat up some food and water and put some of the water into vacuum bottle. The telephone is still silent. Fortunately my cell phone isn't, so I called to the phone company. Hopefully they will fix the lines soon, because the cell phone connection isn't the best possible around here.
Julie
I hope your dad is able to be up and at'em soon enough to make it to see the concert. Prayers going out to him for his recovery.

A foot of snow?! Yikes, Chey! We'll get plenty of snow here soon enough. We've already had a couple of snowfalls, but nothing that lasted. But I know it's coming. <sigh>
Autumn is my favorite time of year, too, for so many reasons. It hasn't quite looked like fall around here, though. The timing of early snow and rain messed up the harvest season and the trees turning. And now we've had a long stretch of pleasant, balmy temps.

Julie, sending speedy recovery thoughts to your dad!
I laughed when I read about your trip to your son's college. Oh, yeah. I get that all the time.
Ellen, what a life!!! Time for yourself, time to read and time to travel. You can't beat that!
I have four kids so my life is never quiet or dull. lol Today though, it was stuff for my husband. His mother had surgery yesterday, and he needs to fly to Minnesota so I searched online, found a flight and booked it. Then, I went to the post office to mail copy edits for my May book. (Copy edits are the stage before the AA's that Julie was talking about.) I also sent my editor a new miniseries idea for 2011. Fingers crossed.
Now, I'll start proofing one of my 2010 books. It's written and polished, but now I have to do a hard copy proof because I just can't catch the errors while reading on a computer.
Obviously, no glamour life for me either--just a crazy busy one.

This is definitely not the first time. Power cuts are something that happen every single winter. Fortunately the sauna still works with wood, so if the power cuts last for a very long time, it is always possible to heat up the sauna stove and heat up some water and food on it. But I can't remember the last time when the phone wouldn't have worked.

Hi Julie
I hope all goes well with your Dad's back surgery. Yes, you have been very busy. My life is settling down a bit, My husband had back surgery the end of September, then he was back in the hospital with a blood clot on his lung for a week in October. Taking care of him and doing everything around the house while he healed was tiring, But, it was the emotional stress (I was so afraid he was going to die) that hit me the hardest.
Now, things are back to normal. Hubby's birthday is this month. Daughter's birthday is next month. I work full time. Plus, I am a Girl Scout Leader and Room mom for her fifth grade class. Then there is Thanksgiving and Christmas too. It will be a busy time, but I like to stay busy.

Julie,
I am sending good wishes for your dad, and pray that the recovery is swift and complete. also want to remind you to never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly.
Life is what comes at me when I am making other plans...seems I am always behind and never get caught up. Right now there is a path through my house and dishes in the sink. My beads are calling to me as all all the books stacked here to be read, including a special one that came in the mail yesterday. Can hardly wait to start reading it.
I'll be praying for you and your family.

Travel safely
back to Missouri - I know at this time of year, things get a little tricky. My best wishes for a speedy recovery to your dad and mom - I'm sure she'll love having your help! Things I do besides work - walk in the mall every day, sing in church choir, play in the handbell choir, read, of course, watch a few favorite tv progs. I know I'm supposed to be retired - most sane people my age are, but I can't see me stopping for awhile! When I'm reading, I try not to be the English teacher I was, but I guess I can't help it! It's ingrained! Enjoy this weather we're having, it probably won't last!

Yes, isn't it fun to communicate with a teenage/young twenty-something son? Yeah. No. Okay. Yeah. That's how a lot of their conversations go.
Now that my son is in college, I've discovered that although I see him less, I talk to him more. He calls me or emails me fairly often. Usually short and to the point, and often with last-minute announcements or how-to questions (got a laundry call yesterday
) but I love it.

Blood clots are such scary things. I lost a dear friend a few years back after she got a clot in her lung--she'd been in the hospital for sleep apnea treatment.
And you're so right about the emotional toll it takes when our loved ones are in harm's way or sick or facing something like major surgery. The doctors don't always tell us how to cope with that aspect of treatment and recovery. I think that's a big reason my folks want my brothers and me to gather around them next week, just for that emotional support. That's always been a blessing in my family that we can do that.

I think that's smart to take time from our super busy schedules and do something just for ourselves at least once a day. Even if it's just for a few minutes. Titles
MinnieM--Thanks for reading BEAUTY AND THE BADGE! I hope you enjoyed it.
My editor and I were going for a play on the story's Beauty & the Beast theme.
And, since the hero's a cop, of course, it made sense to go with "badge."
Are you talking about The Precinct series in general? I'll have another Precinct book out in April 2010, called TAKEDOWN. Then I'm starting a new Precinct miniseries later in 2010. The series is called The Precinct: SWAT Team 1, and features the men (and woman!) of KCPD's premiere SWAT team.
If you're talking about the Precinct: Brotherhood of the Badge miniseries, then BEAUTY AND THE BADGE is actually the last related story in that series. The others were
PROTECTIVE INSTINCTS--Sawyer Kincaid
ARMED AND DEVASTATING--Atticus Kincaid (he's in BEAUTY AND THE BADGE
)
PRIVATE S.W.A.T. TAKEOVER--Holden Kincaid (this story introduces the SWAT team members in my upcoming series)
KANSAS CITY CHRISTMAS--Edward Kincaid (Edward plays a significant supporting role in TAKEDOWN)
Get the idea that I like writing connected books?
Most of them are stand-alone stories, like BEAUTY AND THE BADGE and TAKEDOWN. Yet most of them share a community of characters that readers (and me!) get to meet and revisit time and again.
