Growing up, our family always had pets. My mother and grandmother were both big cat people, so of course there were plenty of cats in my childhood. Perhaps not so serendipitously, Mom and Grandma also enjoyed birds--budgies and canaries. We did our best to keep the twain from meeting, although there were a few mishaps.
In addition to the cats, birds and occasional dog, we also had rabbits, chickens (from Easter chicks--a very bad idea) and...wait for it...monkeys. Squirrel monkeys. There’s a whole story about the monkeys that I’ll have to save for another time.
In any case, the naming of pets can be a pretty interesting exercise. The first cat I clearly remember from childhood--a calico--we creatively named Cali. We had a poodle for a while named Paco (don’t blame me; I think he came with that name). For my 13th or 14th birthday, I got a big black lab/newfie mix we called Beauregard. That was in the day when it didn’t cross our minds to have Beau neutered. He came home one day with four black puppies, all of them ringers for him. Mom must have had enough and decided it was Dad’s turn. Beau was very progressive for his day.
For the most part, we’ve gone more with people names than traditional pet names. Our sheltie (long gone now) was Mike, my husband’s idea if I recall. Our older son named one of our cats Leonardo (after the ninja turtle) and another one T. K. (which stood for Top Kitty). My husband came up with Cosette for my beloved girl kitty who succumbed at a young age to an enlarged chamber in her heart. Hubby was crazy about Les Miserables at the time. Our current boy cat is named Casper, not because he’s white (he’s not) but because he resembles a kitty my mom once owned by the same name. We found Casper a few months after Mom died.
Our current girl kitty was badly mis-named due to an error in translation. When she was a kitten, she was almost entirely white except for her calico tail. She did later develop calico patches, but slowly since she’s part Siamese. So I wanted a snow-related name for her. At the time, my older son (yeah, he seems to name a lot of our cats) was just beginning his study of Japanese. I asked for a Japanese name for snow. He came up with yuki, which I didn’t much like. Then he suggested tenka, which he thought meant snow. That I liked.
Unfortunately, tenka apparently doesn’t mean snow. Luckily, it’s not a naughty word. It means to ignite, like the gas on your stove or a match. Well, Tenka has a spark-ling personality, so I guess it fits.
So, are you a pet person? Any interesting stories to the names you’ve given them? I’d love to hear all about it. On Sunday I’ll draw for a copy of the Mills & Boon edition of THE THREE-WAY MIRACLE (which has an animal theme--horses).

Pets
I'm definitely a pet person, I love animals. I had a bunny when I was two and named her Thumper because she was grey like Thumper in Bambie. My kitty that passed away in Dec was named Phil after my 2nd grade crush. My kitty I have now is named Yoshi by my brother from Super Mario's Yoshi. I had hamster named Orlando after Orlando Bloom.

Happy memories
I think this is going to spur a lot of great memories for us, Karen. I had a dog named Kitty--so called because she'd grown up with cats and heard "kitty, kitty, kitty" so much it was the only name she would respond to. She was a great dog. Learned lots of tricks.

I'm a total animal
I'm a total animal lover!
Our very first pet when I was a toddler was a white cat named Puff-Puff. I'm assuming my sister named him Since I was so young. Unfortunately, somethign wasn't quite right with Puff-Puff and she never understood the concept of a litter box, preferring to use underneath mine and my sister's beds for her bath room. When we moved out of the apartment (I was three at the time) Dad refused to take Puff-Puff with us and swore he'd never again allow a cat in the house.
Our next pet was a white cockapoo who we named Mutton. I don't remember if it was my sister or i who wanted to name him Muffin but Mom and dad didn't like that name for a male dog. So he became Mutton. Several years later Mutton became a daddy to the neighbors across the street's dog, also a cockapoo. But he never brought any of the kiddos home like your dog did Karen. LOL
Mutton died when he was seven of kidney failure, while we were on vacation in Florida. Fortunately, at that time, he was boarded at the vet's so at least we knew he was well taken care of even if they couldn't save him.
Shortley thereafter we got a new dog from the Humane Society, We were told she was a spaniel mix and she was tiny and black with little feet. well, she may have had some spaniel in her, but our girl was a lab/setter mix, solid black and BIG! Even full grown (she got to be 60-70 lbs) and still had little feet for her size. So there goes the theory you can determine a puppy's eventual size by the size of their feet! LOL We weren't very original in naming her and actually I think Mom named her, so she became Ebony. She was 13 or so I think when she died and it was a very sudden thing, one day she was healthy as could be, the next day she couldn't even stand up. We thought we'd have to put her down but she died at the vet's. Still to this day don't know what happened to her, but the vet thought she had internal bleeding, though no one knows why.
It was a few years before we talked Mom into a new dog, and it was more Dad's doing than anything. About 8 years ago I think it was, we got a shih tzu puppy. He was a sweetie and dad always said he liked shih tzus becasue they looked like Ewoks! LOL So he one was aptly named, wicket, for the Ewok of the same name. sadly, Mom and dad had to put him down last year due to "the worst case of skin cancer" the vet had ever seen and there was nothing to be done for him to improve his quality of life.
A couple years after getting Wicket, We all pitched in and got a second shih tzu for dad. Since we bought him for Dad, he got to name him. this puppy had a streak of black across his face, that looked like a mask, when the rest of him was brown/white. So he got the name Bandit, for the "mask." He's still alive though he was lonely there for a while after wicket died last summer. but by Christmas when I was home to visit, he seemed pretty much back to normal.
As for me personally, I have three cats of my own (I had to wait till I moved out since dad STILL to this day refuses to allow cats in the house.) My first I got at a small independent pet store in MD back in May 2003. She was one of a local family's cat's babies. She's almost completely black and I wanted to name her Jet when i got her, but that name didn't suit her personality. She's a little miss priss and thinks she rules the roost. I named her Sheba for the queenly attitude. A couple months later I found two stray kittens in a building i had to survey for work and so I brought them home. kept one, gave one to a coworker. i wanted to keep an Egyptian theme so I did a little searching for a name. My sister found a website listing Egyptian god and goddess names And I found two perfect ones. The one I kept is an orange tabby. He is named Aker (pronounced AH-ker). Aker is the egyptian guardian of the sunrise and sunset, who's animal form was a golden lion. Granted, Aker is striped so more like a Tiger than a lion, but the color suited and I liked the idea of what that god's job was. His brotehr was a silver tabby and gained the name Khonsu, who was the Egyptian god of the moon. Don't remember Khonsu's animal form, but i thought the concept of a moon god (silvery moon) suited his coloring and hence his name.
A few years ago (I think it was 2005) I got my third cat, a half Siamese with flame points. He's adorable but a holy terror to the other two. i tell people he picked his own name, because, well, he did! LOL Again in keeping with the Egyptian theme i was researching names and found a site that listed a bunch of Egyptian names. As i saw ones I sort of liked, i was reading them aloud. My new baby was sitting there right next to me. I came to the name Amun (correct pronunciation I believe is AH-moon, though I pronounce it A-mun) and read it aloud. As I said the name, (And why I pronounce it wrong even knowing it's incorrect since at the time I pronounced it wrong), Amun started meowing. He stopped briefly and i asked him "so you like that name do you?" And he meowed again. LOL So I told him, he got it and that was his name. So see, he DID pick his own name since he was silent as I read aloud going down the list until i came to that one. And no one can convince me otherwise. :-)

Do we like pets?
Yes,with 10 cats and 1 dog,our furbabies are very special. As to names, will try to make it short.
Last year we lost our oldest cat,a tortoiseshell named UnChat(French for cat as our dd#2 was taking french at the time). Our oldest dog,a female shepherd-malamute mix was 11 yr.old Madchen(German for girl-spent 3 years in Deutschland while dh was in Army). Our male golden lab is named Jurgen(after my fave tv guy from Germany also).
Now to our current kitties-Pooter is a grey tabby dh found along a country road and he named him that(no reason).
Stormy is a black calico we got from a feed store(it was a stormy day when we took her home).
Peach is a male orange tabby we got from a lady who rescued cats(he was already named this).
Gizmo is a long-haired tuxedo cat I rescued from under dd#3s mobile home & he reminded me of Gizmo from The Gremlins. He has 2 sisters,Boo is a short-hair all black cat & since it was prior to Halloween it sounded right, then Eule(German for owl as when you look at her all you see in her long black fur is her owl eyes).
Then Sunshine and Snowball who a friend had found in middle of a country road as kittens and they were starving and their eyes were so infected they were sealed closed. Happy to say after treatment they both have beautiful eyes! Snowball is a white Siamese with tabby lines and the most darling crossed baby blue eyes ever! Sunshine is her protector and is also an orange tabby.
Last but not least are two kittens from dd#1-Cutie is an adorable long-hair orange calico with 6 toes on her front paws and 5 toes on her back ones. Her sister is Charmer(which she is) is a grey tabby.
So that is our furbaby family for right now. All are strictly inside as we feel they were all rescued so we plan to keep them as safe as we can.

growing up we normally had pets. On the farm in South America, my sister and I had a pet sheep called Schnoocky. So after we came to Canada we had cats. Can't remember all the names except Rocky. My sister has two cats, Cleo and Caesar.

We were a dog family. There were two dogs when I was born, a Collie, Shane and a hound, Charlie, which I called Cha Cha. When we were small, my sis and I got white puppies, Sugar, a girl, Honey a boy. Sugar was kicked by a horse and died, but Honey lived a long live with the nick name Poor Joe. My dad then let is Red tick hound Red, roam until we got FD (fluffy dog) a white chow. After FD we were blessed for 13 years with Aussie, a blue merle Austrilian Shepherd.
I had one cat while growing up, Violet was her name. My cousin's next door had several dogs, beginning with a black poodle, Happy. A cute las, Defense, a brown German Shorthaired Pointer, Melissa (Missy) and Finally a Blonde lab, Thunder. When my litte cousin was born, her mom gave her Shar Pei, Willie, who moved in with my parents. He, Aussie and Thunder were quite a team.
Now, I have an Austrialian Shepherd, Zoe and my sis has a Shar Pei, Remy.

What Stories!
FF, my son and d-i-l have a Shadow cat as well. Shadow and his brother Zorro are both gray and white longhairs.
nicolerko, I love that you named your kitty after a 2nd grade crush. How romantic!
Susan--talk about an identity crisis. Kind of like a boy named Sue.
Kelley, wow! That's a lot of pets over the years.
Cheryl, I had a tuxedo cat, too. She was part manx and we called her Panda.
Penney, my DH is a huge Dr. Who fan. No pets named after Dr. Who characters, though.
I forgot to mention my cat Cupcake, a stray my stepdad found as a kitten. He was blind. He once stepped off a balcony and dropped about fifteen feet and survived without a scratch. Yeah, he never should have been let outside. But I was young and stupid.

Cool topic.
Bebe, Gibson (named for the light sandy color of a Gibson guitar), Obediah, Baghera, Samantha, Tevya, Sasha, Dusty Rose, Bluebelle, Lexi and Jasmine. Are names of cats that have lived with my family of origin (up through Baghera) and then since I married--Samantha was the 'bridge' cat. She moved from my childhood home to my married life home.
Buff and Spot were the only dogs in my childhood and neither were with us for long. But since I married we have had Kyle, Roger, McLeod (all now deceased), Foxy and Misty. All but one of them have been rescue shelties. Kyle was originally named Clyde- he had a sister named Bonnie. If we had rescued both we would have kept the name, but my then four year old kept forgetting Clyde and she kept calling him Kyle. Roger, and Foxy came with their names. McLeod we changed, but I can't remember his original name, but he was a loud, yappy cloud colored sheltie (scottish dogs) hence the name McLeod--we sometimes called him the loud Mcleod. Misty we renamed, her name was Carly--she is so not a Carly.

Great Names
Christa, I love Schnoocky! What a great name for a sheep.
Kate, FD (Fluffy Dog) is so cute for a Chow. Was Defense a good guard dog?
Nancy, you had some wonderful names. I especially liked Obediah, Baghera & Tevya.
I didn't even mention the horses I've named. When I got my Morgan gelding, his name was Chester (they called him "Chester the molester" because he'd sired one colt before he was gelded). I renamed him Indy (his registered name was Indiana Aztec). My Andalusian/Morgan mare came to be with the name Gal (her registered name is Marro Galaxia). I thought she was too pretty to be a Gal, so I renamed her Belle. You can see pictures of her on my website under "just for fun."

For our two Shelties - we named the girl Dallas (DH is a big Cowboy's fan) and the boy Duke (I like the Blue Devils) Duke passed away in 2006 and Dallas passed away last year. Now we have two kittens. Our girl kitten is black and DD named her Diva (it fits her to a T) Our boy kitten is a Buff tabby and DH started calling him Bubba. I thought he needed a nice name too, so he became Prince Bubba.

Frisky
When I was a child my father had a friend who raised pure bred beagles. He took me to pick out one of the puppies and the one I picked was well "frisky". He was running around in circles, jumping all over the place and didn't want to settle down. So he got named frisky.

We had numerous dogs growing up. We had a black doberman. My mother and father used to drink coffee every morning and listen to Wally Phillips on the radio. So we named him Coffee. A year or so later we got a German shephard who was kind of beer colored, so we named him Schlitz after my father's favorite beer. A couple of years later a stray white dog wandered into our yard. You guessed it, we named him Milk.
We had another dog named Jubal after a character in a book my mother read. I don't know the name of the book. After a while, we were a dog free house, to my mother's great relief. Then my sister who always needed a dog started needing a dog. So we got one. My mother named her DeeDee, short for D**n Dog.
Last year, my sons kept their rooms clean for a month and earned dogs. We rescued a couple of lab puppies who were already named Lance and Lacey. My son, Jonathan, intended to rename his puppy Jonny until my other son said he would let his puppy keep his name. So Jonathan didn't change the puppy's name. Instead he renamed himself Jonny.

Pets
We had pets when I was growing up. Dogs and cats, and a budgie named Tweety, who used to sit on my books and nibble the tops when I was reading. But then we moved to the first house that my parents bought instead of renting, and Mom said 'no more pets'. My husband also had pets growing up. When I met him, he had a cat named JoJo, and a Great Dane named Argus (part of his registered name). After Argus died, they got a Golden Retriever that was named Oro - Spanish for Gold.
As we married, my husband and I adopted a stray cat that the former tenant of our apartment had been feeding. For some reason, my husband called the scruffy looking white and tan female cat Ralph. Ralph died of feline leukemia not long after we adopted her. We also had an adult black cat that a friend gave me, because she wasn't fitting in with his family any more. Her name was Toshi - she and her brother had been found in a MacIntosh apple bag - the boy became Mac, and the girl Tosh. When Ralph died, we then went to a vet and adopted two brothers, and named them Jekyl and Hyde. They too died of feline leukemia when they weren't very old. Toshi seemed resistant. We adopted her in 1990 and she hung around until probably 2000 or 2001, when she developed cancer.
Not to give up, after Jekyl and Hyde died, we went to the local animal shelter, Bide A While. The cats up to now had been free. The shelter charged a fairly heft adoption fee - but it included the first round of shots, a test for feline leukemia, and the cost to get them fixed when they reached the right age. We brought home an itty bitty grey calico girl, just old enough to go to a home, and a black and tabby male a couple of weeks older. We were stumped for names, until a friend suggested Duster for the girl and Demon for the boy (and boy did it fit when he was young!) Car themed names, which suited DH just perfect.
Then my youngest ds wanted 'his own' cat. Demon had adopted the older ds, and Duster never left my DH. So DH goes to a friends, who has kittens. Brings home a tabby, that we call Bee, for Super Bee, another car. Unfortunately, while Bee was a kitten, he was just too old to adapt to being a house pet, and got out one day and never came home. So the same friend has another litter of kittens, and DH brings home one just weaned. Sweet little girl kitten who was just a ball of fur, and made the weirdest noises I've ever heard from a cat. She became Furby.
Couple of years later, another friend has a litter of kittens. I fell in love with the all black one, and brought him home. Warlock - appropriate in that it was another vehicle name, he was black, and born at halloween.
Then in 2008 Duster got extremely ill, and had to be put down. So DH didn't have a cat of his own. So at Christmas, off he and the elder ds go to Bide a While and bring home two kittens. A black and orange calico, with a tan heart shape on the tip of one white paw. Out of car names, so she became Patches. A silvery grey calico kitten, that we named pearl. Thinking a female version of Demon would be better.
Unfortunately, on March 10, I took Demon to the vet. He'd been going down hill all winter, but suddenly was losing a LOT of weight, didn't smell good and wasn't grooming himself. He was also drooling. Turns out he had a cancerous tumor in his mouth. He was at least 17 years old, maybe 18. The vet said there probably wasn't anything she could do, and it would just be torturing him. Which is what I expected. So gave him a hug and left him.
I've never liked people names for pets. Friends had a dog named Emily, and then when they had a baby, they named her Emma. What were they thinking?
Lynne
Ode to Demon
I know my last post was long, but it also made me want to post what I've been thinking of ever since we had to put Demon to sleep.
My husband had said he wanted a cat that would be big, and I wanted one with personality. So, in November 1991, off we go to the animal shelter. Well, there we were and this one lone male tabby was into everything. He was already quite a good size for his age, and I said - thats the one. DH ended up falling for a baby grey calico, and we brought both home, but thats another story.
The tabby was christened Demon, and boy did he live up to his name. Up and down the curtains, terrorizing the other cats. Into everything. And even though he was fixed at an appropriate age, he was constantly getting into scraps with the neighborhood cats. It got to the point that I could call the vet, and say "Demon's been in another fight. I've cleaned the wound. Can I just drop in and get some penicillin?" and she'd say fine.
Then, 3 years later, in 1994, I got pregnant. Demon had never been a lap cat - he was just too busy to sit calmly. But as my belly grew, he was on my lap or cuddled against my tummy every time I sat or laid down. They talk about playing music for the baby when you're pregnant. My son's music was the purring of a large feline. When the baby came, once again, every time I sat down with the baby, there was Demon, cuddled against us.
Alex was born in November. In the spring/early summer, when he was sitting up well by himself, but not yet crawling, I took him outside, and plonked him into the middle of a blanket in the yard. I sat behind him with my book, with one eye on him while he played. Then I looked up - I was in one corner, and in the other 3 corners were my 3 cats; with Demon the closest to him.
Not long afterwards, Alex was crawling in the hallway. The baby gate was down, and DH and I were close, and watching him. He headed for the stairs going up. Demon got in front of the baby, and pushed him away from the stairs. Alex headed down the hallway, towards the basement stairs. Demon got in front of him, and pushed him away. The cat kept doing this, and looking at DH and me as if to say, why aren't YOU doing something. The cat kept it up until the baby got tired of trying to get around him.
We had put a screen door on the nursery so the cats couldn't get in with the baby. But as soon as Alex moved out of the crib into his own bed, there was Demon, sleeping with him every night.
Demon was a tough nut, and very territorial. All his life he would get into fights. Then he'd come in, and I'd clean him up. Even though I was hurting him while I treated him, he'd yell and scream, but as he got older, he rarely bit or scratched, but would change the sound of his meow to let me know when he'd had enough. I'm sure that the cat knew I was helping him and that he'd feel better when I was done.
He ruled the roost. Any time we brought home another cat, Demon would let it know who was boss. He rarely had to establish himself more than once. He would meow at my husband to get milk, or take a scrap of leftovers very neatly from my hand, without nipping.
Three years ago, my husband came home from work one night. Demon was crouched in the driveway, looking underneath a car. DH called Demon, and got ignored, which was unusual. So he went and knelt next to the cat, to see what was of such interest. There was another cat under the car. But neither cat was hissing or growling, so DH coaxed the stray out from the car. He came into the house, and said - look what I found! Over my objections, DH fed the cat, and guess what - we had 4 cats, even though I tried to find the owner. Scamp settled in like he'd always been here. The strangest thing was that while Demon would smack or growl at our other cats, Scamp and Demon always got along.
We could tell Demon was starting to feel his age. He'd calculate a jump a bit longer before taking it, and would refuse to go out if it was snowing, though he'd always enjoyed being out of doors. His eyes were cloudy, and he'd gone partially deaf. Maybe a bit senile too - he'd patrol the yard, yelling at the top of his voice. Was he challenging the neighborhood cats, or just stating it was his territory. When he'd come in the house (through the cat door) he'd march around the main floor of the house yeowling until we acknowledged that we knew he was home.
The last time I took him to the vet, we went throught the same argument about the cat carrier as always. Once he was in, he gave a couple of mournful howls. Scamp and Pearl came running to the carrier and put their noses to it. The three of them communed for several minutes. Demon complained and grumbled in his cat carrier all the way to the vets, but not as vehemently as even the year before. When I opened the carrier for him, I expected to have to tip the carrier to get him out, just as always. Instead, he came out of the carrier with all the dignity of a Japanese Emperor, and sat in a regal pose on the exam table, tail curled around his paws. He let her open his mouth without complaint, and just looked at us.
I'm sure that he knew the vet was going to help him out of his pain.
I'm sure he's in cat heaven now, chasing all the birds he can find, and feeling like the healthy cat he was in his prime. I'm sure I'll never know another cat with his character, and will always miss him.

Pets ...
growing up we had a number of the normal pets ... I had a hamster that I named Baby, she was just soooo small .... and our first kitten was an orange tabby that we of course named Morris after his finicky t.v. commercial namesake .... we had a wirehaired terrier my brother named Snoopy, though he had no resemblence to the t.v. star .... my grandmother had a white husky that she named Nipper as she could never teach him to stop nipping at her heals though that dog truly adored her
when I was single and on my own, a friend found a kitten wandering on the freeway ... I was going to name him Freeway but he didn't look like one at all .... he loved to sing, so I named him Micah after Micah Barnes an accapella singer for the Nylons whom I had met that summer ... sadly my Micah passed on early at the age of three ... man was I devastated
my sister is the real cat lover ... she likes to call them after Roman or Greek gods ... she had two Russian blues .. one was Morpheous and his brother was Dido short for some Greek god that I can't recall ... Morpheus developed a feline disease that meant he had to be kept separate from other cats, so he came to live with my Mom and Dad .. that cat was given a year to live but he lived 10 years, much to my Mom's dismay (she wasn't much of a cat lover, pooches are more her style) ... but Morphie passed on about six months after we lost Dad, he just plain wasted away .. we're sure it was mourning ... so just after the first year anniversary of Dad's death I helped a friend who had two adult cats she needed to find homes for as her son had developed allergies .... so now Mom had an orange tabby named Henry and a beautiful calico named Charlotte ... Charlotte is a real boss, so I like to call her Sheba, I used to all her Budha as she was sooo round she kept topling over, but she's leaned up quite abit and the name no longer suits LOL .... and Henry is just so adorable ... he has no voice but a raspy sort of bark, it's so endearing ... and he reminds me of that carton with the jumping jack russel around the mean bully bull dog, you no the one .. always smiling and happy and eager to be with you ... he's a real blessing
dh and I don't have pets in the house (he doesn't care for them) however we do have cats on the farm .. we have a gorgeous black cat who is the king of our greenhouses and a very mighty hunter .. he brings dh his early morning kills for inspection and praise ... as he was a stray that we hadn't expected to stay around, dh refused to let me name him for fear I'd get too attached ... so he's simply Black Cat or Cat ... and you know what it really suits him! .... he is jet black not a speck of white anywhere, though now he's starting to get some grey on his chest (he must be 16 by now) .... and we've had our assortment of other cats that have come to visit our farm and of course the no name rule applies ... so right now we have .. The 22nd .. The 23rd .. and The 24th ... as they are all named Freeloader the only way we know which one is by their designation! LOL ... may sound mean, but our Freeloaders are so pampered and spoiled ... when our migrant workers are on the farm each season, the cats become everyone's pets

I never had a pet growing up (unless you count the tadpoles I caught in the rain puddles in the service alley behind our house). After I got married, my husband and I adopted a cute West Highland White Terrier from the pound and named her Sadie. After we'd paid a ton to cure her skin problems, a woman showed up at our door one night and accused us of stealing her dog. She took us to court where the judge ruled we had to give the dog back, but the woman had to reimburse us. And because the dog was in bad shape when we adopted her, the Humane Society told the woman they'd be watching her.
So we bought a purebred black Cocker and called her Meg. We had her for about 6 years and had to put her down when she developed severe skin problems that caused her to scratch herself raw and put her in intense pain.
Our next dog was an English Springer Spaniel named Mollie. My husband thought our son needed a pet to teach him discipline. Ha! Mama took care of that dog and nobody ever trained her. I had a newborn in addition to the 4-year-old the dog was for and no time for dog obedience training. When she was 2 we moved and gave her to a farm family.
The new house had woods behind it, and being deathly afraid of snakes, I was advised to get a cat. The first cat was a sassy pewter gray Siamese mix that we named Graycie. A few years later we got a Maine Coon mix. We got her on a Friday the 13th and the boys wanted to name her Jason or Freddie. "She's a girl!!" I told them, so we finally agreed on Spook. Later we got Zelda who turned out to be a he instead of a she and the name got changed to Mr. Bigglesworth AKA Mr. Big. My son got a cat in college -- a big yellow male named Sampton. When son graduated and moved to the big city to work, we took temporary custody until he and his wife bought a house and took Sampson back. My granddaughter calls him "Samfin."
Graycie died, Mr. Big disappeared and we had to put Spook down about 18 months ago so we're petless now and I'm in no rush to get another animal. I guess I'm getting too old for kitten antics and because Spook never adjusted to our move very well, I'm reluctant to adopt an adult cat that might have relocation issues as well.
My husband has fish, and he has a mama guppie that's had 4 litters since January. I've started calling him Henry Huggins and telling him he's going to have gallons of guppies if he doesn't watch out.

I loved reading
all the love stories about the beloved pets. You always remember your pals and some have extra special places in our hearts. I had a Sheltie named Frito that the kids in the neighborhood would always ask if she could come out and play. I didn't dare let her stay in the backyard or she'd find a way out to visit her friends. She lived to be sixteen and even though she's been gone for fifteen years I still miss her. I had Ferrets for years and years but they don't live long enough and the pain of losing them was too much. I now have three cats one is a stray I feed. Boo the big scaredy cat, Dixie my little manx looking hunter, and Mitzi Mama the stray. I also have a rescue dog that is a 12 lb. Chihauhua/Terrier mix who just last month was attacked by a pit bull but is doing so well now. It's one month tomorrow and he ran around the backyard this evening. We weren't sure he was going to make it at first but I'm so glad I didn't give up on him since he sure didn't give up. Anyway thanks for allowing us to share our stories. This has been great!

Thank you
Thank you, I recieved my book today. I can't wait to start it!
I've only ever had two pets, and I have them now. One is named Earl, he's my yellow anaconda. The other is my dog, Lily. Lily was named by my daughter. Earl, well, he was named by one of my co workers. When he was delivered to me, I was at work and one of the guys said, "Now, that is one Earl looking..." (can't finish the rest.) and it just sort of stuck.

So glad I stopped in here before heading to bed!
I grew up with dogs but it was after both my sister and I had married and moved out that my family still stayed connected through our dogs. Mom and Dog got a golden they called "Shane" after my mother's favorite character on her soap opera "Days of our Lives"...Shane Donovan. When my sister and her husband got a corgie a few months later he got the last name "Donovan" and I got my sheltie about six months later so I had to name him "Charlie" (after the actor who played the role, Charles Shaughnessy).
That was seventeen years ago and only one still with us is Donovan...he's an old guy but still king pup of the family!

Shelli, a snake--how cool! I'd love a snake, but DH, not so much.
We actually have the oddest snakes pop up in our back yard. They're so tiny that at first glance they look like worms, then they lift their head and do that snakey thing with their tongue. So very cool! I'd take one as a pet, but first, I have no idea how to take care of a snake, and second, they are wild critters. So I just enjoy them when I find them and leave them be.

I had a number of cats and dogs as I was growing up. Now that I have kids, I still have a number of cats and dogs! Right now we have two cats and two dogs. Our oldest cat is Miss Kitty. My oldest son named her after Miss Kitty on Gunsmoke because she acts like her. She's pregnant right now. The next cat is Oreo and my youngest son named her that because she's black and white. Oh! and she'spregnant too.She belongs to ny oldest son and he's done told her that when she has her kittens that he will be the grandpa of them. We haven't told him that he may not get to keep them. I didn't think it was time to break his heart. Then there's my oldest dog Max who was named from Max on Dragon Tales. I tell everyone that he's my minature horse! And last but not least is Runt. My father-in-law, who's deceased now, and my youngest son named her that because she was the littlest out of her litter. Can you tell that my kids have all the names?
Karen, great topic!
and some really fun comments, guys!
I love pets. I mostly have cats. Had a puppy once from a junkyard. We named her Gracie because, well, but for the Grace of God, she wouldn't have had much of a chance. She turned out to be great dog.
And I had a cat named Arnie who loved jazz. Give him a little Coltrane and he was on the floor on his back, lookin' dreamy-eyed.
And a parakeet named Pixie who flew away one day in the Sierras in late spring while I was cleaning his cage. We got him back in the fall when he swooped in and landed on a neighboring fisherman's head while he was flyfishing in the predawn hours. Quite the adventurer, that Pixie!

Pets and their names
I grew up with a collie that my father gave to my mother the year before I was born. Her name was Vicki (short for Victoria Van Fleet), and the last name, as I understand it, was from a military man in the Korean War. (Why they named her that, I have no idea. My dad was in WWII.) Used to drive me crazy because anytime a kid would see her, he'd yell, "Lassie!" She was, like Lassie, incredibly smart. My mother could just talk to her, and she'd understand. She lived until I was 13 (she was 14), so losing her was especially tough. During that same time period, I had a small turtle, a number of fish of various types, and a guinea pig, but I can't really remember whether I even named them. (Can't believe I didn't, but no names come to mind.) Ironically, now I'm dreadfully allergic to guinea pigs -- as in throat and eyes swelling shut. So, no more guinea pigs for me!
After Vicki, we had two more collies (all purebred), Go-Go (short for Jan's Golden Dancer because of the way she danced on her back feet) who died all too soon of brain cancer and Missy ("Mother's Mischief Maker") who died at about 12. The miracle of all this is that my mother has always been scared to death of animals -- almost any animal. She wasn't scared of our own dogs, but any other dog frightened her to death, and we won't even discuss cats. (Probably a result of having been the youngest of 9 kids growing up in the country with some pretty rowdy brothers who liked to torment her.)
Once I got in college, I adopted our sorority mascot Themis after the sorority sister who got her got married and left. She was probably mostly Jack Russell terrier, I think. She should have been named Houdini, though. While my aunt was keeping her for me once, she escaped a fenced run in a fenced yard, and we never found her.
As I was living at home again after college, I didn't have any more pets for a while. However, my DH had a cat (Inky -- a tortie) that had been his mother's prior to her death who lived to be about 17, and two Keeshonds, a male named Bear and a female named Fluffy that I acquired when we got married. Fluffy died the March after we were married (in December) of complications from having been treated a few years before for heartworms. Bear lived to be about 13.
However, just a week after Fluffy died, my good friend at work found a dog on her way in one morning lying in the middle of the road. She and a colleague went out and coaxed her off the road and brought her in to the office. Because my friend had an older shih tzu that did not get along with other dogs, she asked me if I could take the stray home while she ran the ad in the paper. I figured DH would blow, since he said he didn't like dogs in the house. But this little stray was very sweet. She was black and silver and, as someone else said, seemed to name herself. We were running down names trying to find one she knew, and she responded to Pepper, which seemed appropriate because of her coloring. She was a schnoodle (schnauzer/poodle mix) as best we could tell, and it only took 5 minutes of being around her for my DH to change his opinion about dogs in the house. Her back popped whenever you'd pick her up. The vet said she may have been hit and that she was between 5 & 8 years old because she already had her wisdom teeth but had not yet developed cataracts. We had her for 11 years (until she was 16-19 & my DD was 9). She went everywhere with us, except when the weather was too brutally hot.
During that same time, we acquired a buff colored tabby that was roaming the neighborhood living under our neighbor's shed and taking down birds every time I'd put out birdfeed. I had a mild allergy to cats, so we weren't going to bring him in the house. Once our DD started playing with him, we took him to get shots and discovered that he had feline leukemia, which is highly contagious. So, despite the sneezing and wheezing, we brought him in, named him Waffles (my DD's idea) because he was roughly the color of waffles, and took care of him for about 6 years before he died. He was a character, too. Loved to nip me in the backs of my knees, which scared me at first, never having had many experiences with cats growing up. My DH told me that cats do that when they mate, so whenever the cat would bite me, my DH would say, "Knock it off! She's not mating with you! She's already spoken for."
We had a series of hamsters starting with Graham Cracker (the class golden hamster, already so named) when my DD brought him home from school for the summer and the teacher transferred schools. Then we had Tazzie, a teddybear hamster. When he died, my DM brought my DD a beautiful gray Siberian dwarf hamster she named Millie. As it happened, Millie was preggers and had two babies (thankfully, both female!) named Junebug and Nubbin (the runt). We also had a series of 3 hermit crabs over time thanks to one of DD's school friends (can only remember Raisin's name right now) and 3 lizards thanks (or no thanks!) to one of DH's coworkers (named Lizzie, McGuire, and Ginko). Did not enjoy having to purchase live crickets to bring into the house to feed the lizards. Ick!
Eventually, my DD started champing at the bit for another dog, so we went to the pound and found Triskit, who is a part Cairn terrier and part who-knows-what (named because at that time we had Waffles and Graham Cracker and because her big, pointy ears, which you can see in my avatar, reminded us of the new triangular Triscuits crackers. So we continued the food theme). She's a wonderful, incredibly intelligent dog, also black and silver like our previous dog.
After Waffles died and enough time passed to insure that the disease wasn't lingering, we acquired Carter (already so named) from the Shamrock Foundation where my DD volunteers. He's a tuxedo cat with only a partial tail because part was already gone when they rescued him and part died later. He still longs for the outdoors, but he's gradually learning that he can view it from the window and remain in the safety of the house. Then, during my DD's last year of middle school, we acquired Dusty Chin (a chinchilla) from one of DH's coworkers. He's a very sweet-natured, soft, and beautiful guy, but he has a malocclusion that requires that we have his teeth filed down about every 4 months. Ugh! Last, but far from least, we acquired Meijer at the grocery of the same name one night when we'd made a late night run for something. A woman was there with a gray tabby kitten about 14 days old that had been found in her friend's fenced yard -- no mother cat in sight and no other kittens around. His eyes were barely open, and his ears were still folded down. He had two puncture wounds in his flanks and one beside an ear, so we think a small bird of prey had picked him up and eventually had dropped him -- probably because he raised such a ruckus. You never saw such a small kitty with such a loud cry! Anyway, we agreed to take him for one night only until a nursing mother could be found, but it's 5 years later, and I'm looking at him sleeping on the chair right now. He had to be bottle fed and wiped down with warm cloths to induce bowel movements, and, because he was hand-raised, he's pretty sure he's human and my DD is his mother. She can hold him upside down, and he purrs his guts out. Whatever she does is okay with him. The term "Curiosity killed the cat" was invented for Meijer.

Pet Names
Were do I beginning: Growing up I had dogs and heifers(cows) and steers for pets. I use to show alot in 4-H and FFA. I know this is crazy.
The first one I remember is Sockey. He was my Grand Champion Steer at our county fair! We name him that because he had 4 white socks on his legs. Then I had a heifer called Cookie. Here real name was Helm Fortune Cookie. She was such a wonderful animal to show and I won many prizes with her. Another steer was called Red, because he was red. We had a bull named Mr. Whiskey, because when he was born it was really cold and we wasn't sure he was going to make it. So we gave him a shot of whiskey. We had a couple of twin calves that we my kids named a couple of years ago and there names was Curly and Mo.I could go on and on with all the heifers and steers I had as pets, but I will move on to the dogs.
Going up we raised Austrial Shepards: Chance, she was my 2nd chance to have an Aussie when I got married. Trucker, he was one my brother named because he was driving a dump truck at the time. Our English Setters, Banjo, Majic, Blizzard, Deacon, Dreamer. Banjo was because my husband wanted a dog named that. Majic because when she was a puppy she would lay right down by me when we picked her out and I told my husband this is the one I want because there was something between her and I. Blizzard my daughter named her because she is all white. Dreamer because my son named her and he had dreams about her. Deacon because he was named that when we got him. Our labs: Gator, Ice, and Mojo. Our yellow lab Gator was named that because he came from Texas. Don't ask , Thats what my husband said. Ice, our black lab, because she looks like a black ice. Mojo, because she is going to be hunting doves, ducks and geese and a decoy my husband uses is called Mojo and he thought that was a cool name.
I know some of mine our weird but hey I'm a farm girl in and out. If I could remember all of my animals it would be a very long post. So I narrowed it down for you!!!

Great topic...
I love animals!!! Lets see we have two cats. One is named Lucky because it was only by luck and a twist of fate that I found her. Was supposed to head from work straight to dd's vball game but decided I needed to switch into some jeans and a T-shirt so headed home. Got behind slow moving coal truck and not wanting to be late for the game, decided at the upcoming Y in the road I'd go whatever way he didn't. Lucky for me there are lots of ways to get home. That's how I ended up on a country road on a really hot day where a little wee kitty was sitting the middle of the road covered in filth and tar with both eyes swollen and matted shut. Drove slowly past her thinking she'd dash off into the weeds but she didn't budge. I backed up. She didn't move. Got out and she walked to the edge of the road and sat down. I gave this grimy, itty-bitty thing a quick once over, my heart was breaking for her, and then she walked to my car even though the stereo was blasting and the air conditioner blowing and I lifted her in. She fit in the palm of my hand. She was barely four weeks old the vet surmised. That's how our love story began. She was lucky because if there hadn't been a vball game, I hadn't wanted to get out of my work clothes, if a slow moving truck hadn't gotten in front of me, I'd never have been on that road. We were simply meant to be. *G* So after months of vets visits and lots of medicine and lots of cleaning, she's quite healthy and spoiled. That's her picture up by my name. She's our lucky baby.
