My daughter is 12 years old now and she really only started reading for fun last year. Before that she hated reading and no matter how much I tried to get her to read she wouldn't.
We just emailed Lorie as Paige wanted to help out with the challenge. She has been reading Nancy Drew books and she loves them. Paige wants to read books that are paranormal and mystery.
Are there any books out there that you guys can recommend that doesn't have sex in them. Or at least behind closed door sex.
I would really appreciate any help you can give.

I have alot of recommendations.....
Okay, coming from a 13 year old, I have read alot of Paranormal novels. I think your daughter would like the Twilight series by Stehpine Myer, Cirque Du Freak series by Darren Shane, I read Janet Evanovich, but there is only like two or three novels with sex in them. The rest are sort of mystery and crime fighting with comedy twists. I have other reccomendations about other novels that would really be great for a pre- teen. I read these one novels by a woman by the name of Lurlene McDaniel. I loved them. They are sort of insperational type of novels ,but with a teenager outlook. Hope those help...

Animorphs! Does anyone
Animorphs! Does anyone else remember the Animorphs books? I loved those as a kid. Great paranormal kids stories. Don't know if they are still kicking around in UBS.
And ROSWELL... I loved that tv show. There were heavy make out scenes in the show, but the sex was behind closed doors. There is a "Roswell High" series of books. I never read them myself, but it is a GREAT paranormal story and I loved the tv show so much. I'm sure the books are great, they are the basis for the show. I suspect the books don't have as much makeout action, that was probably added to the tv show for the ratings. Probably good for the age group you're looking at.
And hey... for any young girl... I recommend the Lucy Maud Montgomery books! I know they aren't paranormal, but hey, they kind of have a gentle romance to them, and Emily of New Moon's story has a bit of a "destiny" and "sixth sense forewarning of future dangers" in it. Three mini-series by LMM I recommend: Emily of New Moon (3 books), Pat of Silver Bush (2 books), Jane of Lantern Hill (2 books?), Anne of Green Gables (7 books)
Lurlene McDaniel??? Is she
Lurlene McDaniel??? Is she the one who wrote all the YA books that were about sadness and cancer and people dying? Eeek. I have memories of reading a couple books I think by her.... and they made me sob like mad. I'm not a fan of sadness. *runs in the opposite direction*
I have a few...
but they both have boys as the main characters, if that's OK. My DD loves mysteries and paranormal as well. We listened to them on audiobook. Half Moon Investigations by Eoin Colfer. The Book of Time by Guillaume Prevost (and there's a sequel coming out soon, which is darn good because the book ends on a cliffhanger!)
I agree about the Stephenie Meyer books...good paranormal and teen romance. Plus, MaryJanice Davidson has a some paranormal books for teens (I think the heroine is Jennifer Scales....search Google for that!) but I've never seen them in person. I'm keeping my eyes open, though, for those for my own DD! :-)

Mercedes Lackey's Dragon
Mercedes Lackey's Dragon series is good and doesn't have any sex in it. Just affection between the hero and heroine (who are not BTW dragons).

Animorphs
My 10yr old son loves Animorphs and we found about 30 different ones at our local library.
Is there an age requirement for those that ar ein the challenge?

Tamora PIerce's Song of the Lioness Quartet
has behind doors sex and she has 3 lovers over the 4 books. From the perspective of a middle aged mom, it's really well done but I don't know how you'd want to handle it (or how I'd handle it with my own child). I listened to the audio versions last year and really liked them. The heroine starts out as a 10 y.o. girl posing as a boy so that she can become a knight, which she does in the 2nd or 3rd book. I was angry with my babysitter when I finished the 4th/last book b/c there is a lot of violence and death in it -- climatic good v evil stuff in which some of the good guys die and my babysitter hadn't warned me. So, might be too much for your 12 y.o. but I liked what the series overall said about friendship and loyalty. Maybe you could read or listen to them yourself first? They're pretty short -- probably a two hour read per book if you get the print version.
Pierce has written other series that get high ratings but I've not read them to tell you what you need to know about the sex.

Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy books.
And James Patterson's Maximum Ride books.
Now all I have to do is look up the authors and their books so far!!

MY BOOK REVIEWS
Cozy mysteries are aleays a
Cozy mysteries are aleays a good choice and usually have little sex but stay away from hard-boiled mysteries. Ask a librarian? I liked Agatha Christie at that age and some of the classic mystery writers but I took to reading the second I learned how. I am hesitant to recommend because I just sort of skimmed sex parts of books at her age because they were boring. For fantasy, I loved Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea Trilogy which is a fantasy about a wizard.

Anne MacCaffery's Harper
Anne MacCaffery's Harper Triology has a heroine and it starts when she is about 13 or 14. So that might be a good bet.

Good reads
I work in a library and frequently get this question from teens. This is what I recommend for fantasy and scifi readers:
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer (the whole series, but that's the first one)
The City of Ember and The People of Sparks (two separate titles) by Jeanne Duprau (I've heard the Prophet of Yonwood isn't that great, but the first two received rave reviews from our teen and juvenile patrons)
Amelia Atwater-Rhodes (any of hers, although, truth be told, her writing quality is hit or miss; still, teens should love her books)
Susan Cooper's five book Dark is Rising series (upon which the recent movie was based, but don't worry: the books are far better)
Gail Carson Levine's books
The 13-volume Lemony Snicket series (upon which the movie A Series of Unfortunate Events was based)
Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series and his Abhorsen series (he has other series/books but I haven't read those; still, no reason to believe they aren't good reads as well)
The Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz and the Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter (ok, they aren't fantasy/scifi, but the first series is really good, and the second really popular)
Stephenie Meyer and Scott Westerfeld also come to mind (even though they've already been recommended, they're worth mentioning again)
If I were at the library, I could take you right to some really great books, but alas! I can seldom remember all the titles and authors...
If you're ever really in a bind for good reading, check out the ALA's reading lists. In fact, they just came out with a list of favorite teen reads.
