The other night I was writing the Nocturne BITE due, uh, tomorrow! Clean House was blaring on the television in the background. They’re searching for the messiest house in America. Love that show, because it makes me feel good about my house, especially when I’m on deadline. I look at the clutter on that show and chortle, “Ok, now I don’t feel so guilty about my rabbit farm of dust bunnies.”
I’m writing and glancing up to see Niecy Nash in the woman’s kitchen, which looks like last year’s dinner got lost somewhere between the stove and the fridge. Then Niecy sorts through items in the kitchen for the yard sale (there’s always a yard sale to get rid of items the homeowners loathe to part with, but must). Niecy combs through a box and says, “You have books in your kitchen.”
I stop typing. My heart is racing. My breath rate is increasing.
“No,” I whisper. “Don’t, Niecy.”
The homeowner says, “I love to read mysteries.”
Niecy replies, “In the kitchen. No. These books have to go.”
I abandon the laptop and scream at the television. “No honey, don’t do it! DO NOT SURRENDER THE BOOKS!”
The homeowner says in a small voice, “I can’t give up my books.”
“Yes,” I cry out. “Tell her. Tell her to get rid of the funky green planter, your collection of rusty pots, the ancient microwave. But the books MUST STAY!”
Can you tell I’m addicted to books?
I have books leaking out of cabinets, books shoved into hidden spots in the bedroom, books lurking on the nightstand, even books in the trunk of my car I meant to bring to a thrift store and changed my mind at the last minute. I keep getting more books, books I want to read, but have no time to read.
I warned myself when I went to RWA earlier this month that I would NOT take more books. Well, maybe just the ones at the luncheons.
Hah.
They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I say the road to a book addiction is paved with free books.
It happened when I stopped by the Harlequin booksigning. I had a little free time, so I decided to swing by to say hello to people I knew, especially fellow Nocturne author Linda Johnston.
The minute I entered the crowded room, I morphed into a human locust.
Free books. Free books signed by the authors! I began foaming at the mouth. Not pretty.
Armed with empty arms, I swarmed into the room. I buzzed over to the Harlequin Presents authors. Silhouette Intimate moments. Heather Graham’s new one! Rachel Vincent signing Prey! Carla Neggers, a favorite of a friend of mine.
Then I came to an absolute dead halt. OMG! Anne Stuart! My idol! Wearing little devil horns! Arms starting to fill up, I flew over and nabbed her latest, Silver Falls.
By the time I got to Linda, I was glassy-eyed and had the appearance of a sated, happy human locust.
When I staggered out of the room with an armful of treasure, someone remarked, “Got a few books, huh?”
I headed immediately for the Fed Ex shipping office and arranged to ship the books home. All but a couple.
After, it was escaping to my room, feeling the afterglow of a true book addict. What else could I do? I picked up one of the books and began to read.
Books have seen me through good times and bad. They comforted me those sleepless nights I cared for my dying mother. They’ve been great companions on long trips when my husband insists he’s not lost (but where ARE we?). And they’ve transported me to other times, places and worlds when I just needed an escape.
If Niecy Nash from Clean House ever walks through my front door, I’ll be prepared.
The old, dusty flowers that were my mom’s? Yeah, yard sale. The DVD collection of television’s greatest hits from the Sixties? Absolutely. The Coca Cola collection of cans from around the world that survived Hurricane Wilma? It’s yours. The one piece of oak we saved from the 50-foot tree that did NOT survive Hurricane Wilma? Burn it.
Take my husband’s Elvis CD’s, the Taco Bell dog that recites slogans in Spanish, toss the dog’s toys they never play with, sell the pottery I bought in Nicaragua.
But touch my books and you are in big, big trouble.
Never surrender the books. Ever.

I am not alone in my
I am not alone in my craziness. What a laugh reading your blog and realizing yes, I'm not alone. I just got rid of four, count them, four big boxes of books to a lady who's disabled and cannot afford to buy books so I feel good about what I did. But I kept three boxes because there are books I just won't get rid of.
YOU GO GIRL!
Absolutely, they're not taking my books! They can get me more shelves and put them up for me! Leave me furniture, food and my books. Oh, and the 'puters since we use them for school and work. Everything else, yard sale. Yeah.
So, did the lady really let the books go to the yard sale??? Maybe one of her good friends bo't them to give them back later. I'd do that for any of you!!

I'm so much of a bibliophile that i asked my mom for $6 to actually buy yours and Anna Hackett's Bites

I'm with you
I could not give up my books, they could take most everything just not my books.
Penn that is a great idea, call up a friend tell them they made you put the books in the yard sale and have them come buy them all. Genius!
I used to watch a show like that, but I couldn't watch them make people give up stuff that was important to them.
humm
I take mine to the library. I know they are like the greatest gift out there but other people should be able to share them to. Don't get me wrong I have my favorites that will not ever be parted with! They stay hidden in my bedroom so my dh doesn't put them in the other pile. Sigh just thinking aboutu having to take the next load there!
Jessiecue
I do get rid of a fair number of books,
but to be told that I had to get rid of my keepers (or my huge TBR)? NO WAY!

Don't take my books
Get rid of books?? Never. Well - maybe if I replaced it with an ebook. Or, absolutely could not stand the book. But that doesn't happen very often. Which means I have a LOT of books. Luckily, DH is a pack rat himself - not of books but of a number of other things. And as long as I don't nag him about his "Stuff", he doesn't say anything about my book collection. Except to ask where I plan to put the next bookshelf I'm bringing home. But even then, he's promised to some day build me a library.
Lynne
I'm a collector too
I'll never get rid of my keepers. Now I have a Kindle it's a little easier to hide my obsession, a lot easier to lug it around and the house is now tidy (well, it at least doesn't have books lying around, just one tiny Kindle and no need to mention the dust).
Great to meet you in DC, Bonnie.

Hey Penn!
Honestly, I don't know what happened to the woman, I had to shut off the television after that! I couldn't bear to watch.
Love your idea! If it ever comes down to that, I'd borrow it! Tell a friend, have HER buy all the books, and then resell to me. HA!

See it's nice to be
See it's nice to be surrounded by all the bookaholics. As a matter of fact I'm heading out to the bookstore to search for more. A certain store didn't have the Supperromances I was looking for but I know the bookstore will. Don't know about you guys but if I can get them at a discount place fine but if I don't I head out to my bookstore. I'm glad I did that too with all those books. She came to pick them up yesterday and she was so excited. She drove an hour for these books. Shows you the love people have for reading.
I feel so at home here!~ :-)
I too am completely and totally addicted to books. I buy way more than i can keep up to reading...but for some reason, and i know it's not the brightest thing, i keep buying regardless. So a definate addiction for sure. But at least it's not going to hurt my health...and their not so expensive that i'll lose my house buying them. I can always find a way to justify buying a book/books if i really need/want it/them. LOL

I have decided I'll never be satisfied...
I've decided I'll never be truly satisfied, because I LOVE books and HATE clutter. LOL. It really would've been better to have been born with one trait OR the other.
I have yelled at the TV, too, when watching professional organizers blithely tossing away boxloads of books. The worst was this one Canadian chick who is not only naturally neat but also rail-thin, gorgeous, and the camera spends, like, an HOUR on her designer-shoe/boot-stilleto-clad feet everytime she climbs out of her SUV to take on her clients, who are not thin or gorgeous but who look more like...well...me.
Anyway, she would invariably wrinkle up her cute little button nose when confronted with books. "Eeeewww! These SMELL." The homeowner would hopefully explain that this is just the way old books smell, and actually it's kind of a cozy and comforting smell, and-- but it was no good, the organizer would stare at her like she had a screw loose until the homeowner was shamed into getting rid of them all.
I always wanted those shows to come back three months later. You just knew that there would be crazily-tilting book towers once again dominating every room. The idea that you could "cure" bibliophilism that way! It's like throwing away a junkie's stash, then brushing your hands together in satisfaction: job done! They're clean and sober for good now! Yeah, right.
Bonnie
I love Niecy Nash, but I CANNOT make myself watch that show! I have things that mean the world to me that others might think trash, but they are MINE! And making someone give up books, well, they must not be a 'book person'.
I wanted to ask you a question. Have you heard anything about Juan? I keep thinking about the little guy, and I'd love to know that he's got his own HEA on the way, ya know?
Hugs,
April

That's such a nice thing you are doing for that person, giving them the books. I have a friend in Haiti and usually she's the one I collect books for, as she can't find English books over there and she loves to read.
Good luck with the books! There's a UBS by me that has a whole room of Harlequins, dating back years! It's like a treasure trove.

Hi Lulu!
Wow, that designer shoe wearing woman who thought books smelled just does not get it.
I hate clutter as well, but could never sacrifice my books. I have a stash in a closet in the spare bedroom. They belonged to my mom. I have romance novels from the 60's and 70's! Love those old covers. The books are worn and well-read, and smell musty and sometimes I'll drag them out, read them and be immersed in wonderful memories of my mother reading on the couch when I got home from school.

Hi April
Thanks for asking about Juan... I'm so sorry, I hate hate hate having to break the bad news...
Unfortunately, Juan died. He just had too many things going against him. Maybe if we had gotten to him earlier, we could have saved him. I don't know. I can't even imagine how his mother is coping. I know we are helping them, but how can you replace a child?
It's sometimes too much to think about, so I personally try to concentrate on the kids we can, and do, save. There are a lot of them. But I know Juan will live in my memory for a long, long time.
Thanks for asking, and I'm so sorry to tell you the bad news. I really appreciate you caring about what happened.

Trust me when I say that I hated to hear it as much as you hated to say it. But who knows how much easier things were for him during that short time because of what was done for him. Thanks for letting us know regardless of the outcome. Will remember his mom as she goes through the loss of her precious Juan.

The books????
That seems like surely it would be a sin! I never understand when people get rid of books or think they need to clear them out! Why would someone NOT be comforted by all those wonderful, beautiful choices surrounding them?
I have to laugh, though. My parents got a cat recently and he's spoiled rotten and can get away with anything...until he veers near her books! Then he gets the glare of death! Glad to know I got my love of books honestly....

Love the cat story! I think I'd feel the same.
Once Tiger, our Shih Tzu we lost this year, got hold of one of my romance novels. It was a Teresa Medeiros historical. He chewed it up. Boy, was I upset, but I wasn't about to do anything to him. He was still a puppy. So I got him a bone and I got myself another copy.
And then I learned NOT to leave any books on the floor, lol.

I've got 2 addictions. . .
books and yarn. Need I say more?????? I would kill (just figuratively ;-)) ) anyone who would try to make me get rid of those two important stashes. My husband built me some shelves for my yarn. I was glad and sad at the same time, because then I had to come clean about just how much yarn I really did have!!! I really to try to keep the book piles under control and I'm doing a fairly good job. The problem is that my eyes are bigger than my belly as my Mother used to say. So many books, so little time. However, the fun is in the collecting. Happy reading and knitting to me
Kathy... yarn!!!
Thank you! I feel better now. I have (confession here) a whole bag of yarn stashed in the closet. I crochet, and I haven't touched the needle in, ah, a long time. Keep meaning to, so why toss the yarn? I mean, I WAS intending to crochet a baby blanket for my friend's baby who is now celebrating his 7th birthday.
Good intentions count, right? Glad your husband built you some shelves!

I get the willies just thinking about it!
Give up my books to a yard sale? I tried that once and it turned out horribly. The first woman that walked up and began rummaging thru the books made my hair curl with the way she just tossed them around. I began to hover. The next young girl picked one up and started to curl the pages and I grabbed the book out of her hand and the third woman, let's just say I think I cured her addiction to yard sales, it wasn't pretty. My husband picked all the books up and took them in the house. He didn't think it was worth the police showing up for the crazy woman stalking the book browsers. He told me NEVER to put books in a yard sale again.
I now take the books that I have no emotional commitment with to my mother and she reads them and they magically disappear from her house. My husband and I own a custom cabinetry business and there are book nooks everywhere in the house (in addition to the 22 dedicated book shelves). I have a sony digital reader and have begun a cd library with downloaded books. Books and Chocolate... put them down and step away, no one has to be hurt if they just step away!
Drkeel
22 book shelves? Wow, that's wonderful! Good for you. I laughed at the image of you "stalking" the book browsers. I'd do the same, which is one reason we seldom have yard sales.
I used to "borrow" books from my mother and forget to return them until she wanted to read them again. We had a nice little book club of our own.
