Vincent D’Armano is a young man in the 1700s when he is turned into a vampire and later is cursed by a Shaman to feel strong emotion. His sire, Epatha, is one of the ancients, and she quickly becomes obsessed with Vincent. After he flees Epatha and her dangerous fascination with him, she swears vengeance, destroying everyone, especially the women to whom Vincent grows attached.
Alara Gale is a police detective who believes vampires are real after seeing her childhood boyfriend killed by a mysterious person who flees into the night. Now Alara is investigating a string of murders that suspiciously remind her of that death she witnessed so many years ago. When Vincent arrives in town, Alara is hopelessly drawn to him, even though she fears he may somehow be connected to the killings.
Vampires are real as Alara quickly finds out and now she and Vincent are in a fight for their life to escape Epatha's insanity, even going so far as to flee into the past hoping to stop Epatha before she can ever turn Vincent.
Vincent and Alara’s progression from strangers to friends to soul mates happens gradually throughout the story. Their path is full of difficulty as Vincent has to overcome his fears of what Epatha will do and Alara holds the hatred in her heart for all vampires after what happened to her long ago boyfriend.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit, though it did tend to drag on in a few places. However, for the most part, Night’s Eternal Promise is fast paced with plenty of adventure to keep you interested in seeing how Vincent and Alara’s story will end. When our couple, and Vincent’s young friend Charlie travel into the past to try to save Vincent’s soul, the story changes significantly as they face new obstacles to their happiness.
Julie D’Arcy’s first foray into the vampire romance genre with Night’s Eternal Promise follows many of the tried and true characteristics, while also adding some new elements of her own. I especially liked the addition of Native American Shamanism that curses Vincent and may also be the key to saving his soul. We have a touch of reincarnation as well, in that when Vincent meets Alara, he is convinced she is his former lover, who was murdered by Epatha, born again.
