Nobody's Baby But Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Avon 1997

Oh what tangled webs we weave when we practice to deceive!

That old quote comes to mind when beginning this book!

Genius, Dr. Jane Darlington, a physics professor wants a baby.  She grew up feeling like a freak because of her high IQ, she was only thirteen when she started college.  Because of this she wants the father of her child to not have high intelligence!  Since most sperm banks have donations from medical students she doesn't want to take her chance going that route to conceive. Medical students tend to be to smart.  Dr. Jane comes up with the brilliant idea of using an athlete to be the baby's father with no intention of involving him in her life or the life of the child.  After seeing quarterback, Cal Bonner of the Chicago Stars, in an interview she decides he is just the candidate she needs for her plan to have a baby.  The opportunity  to meet Cal falls in her lap when neighbor, Jodie needs a woman to be his birthday present!  What follows is not at all what Jane had in mind.

Cal Bonner is surprised to see "Rosebud aka: Dr. Jane Darlington" back for a repeat performance!  He is completely mystified why this woman is masquerading as a hooker but he goes along with her deception.  Two months later Cal is not so happy when he discovers that "Rosebud" is not what or who she said and she is pregnant with his baby.  He insists on marriage as no child of his is going to be raised without him.

Cal and Jane seem to be the most mismatched couple imagineable but as they get to know each other the cold, business only relationship starts to change.  Two more stubborn people don't exisist but will they find a way to love each other and the unborn child Jane is carrying?

Another good story in the Chicago Stars series.  Although I'm not sure I like the way these men are portrayed the book is still good reading and the humor is enjoyable.  Reading about two people butting heads while falling in love always keeps things moving along! Laughing
