Oh, those hunky cowboys!!

cowboy-wow.jpg

Are you a Linda Lael Miller and Diana Palmer fan? Do you like modern day cowboys?  Do you miss them in Desires?

As a writer of the old west, at times I bring those stories forward in heroes who are smart businessmen, but cowboys at heart.  They are one-time rodeo champions who’ve made millions, like Reese Parker in Fortune’s Vengeful Groom or millionaire exclusive dude ranch owners, like Trent Tyler in Five-Star Cowboy or millionaire CEO pretending to be a cowboy, like Sam Beaumont in Bunking Down with the Boss.

These men have something that draws women to them. Is it the allure of old west and the mystery and intrigue that makes a cowboy tick?  Is it pure fantasy for readers –let’s face it, cowboys are hot!

I’ll be proposing a modern day cowboy series for Desire and would love to know what your take is on them?  What kind of stories make you pick up the book? Do you like ranchers with a secret agenda or an emotionally wounded cowboy or hero/heroine trapped together by physical location or reunion stories? Keeping the modern day cowboy in mind, what would you like to see in Desire stories next?

I’ll be giving away a hard-to-find copy of The Heart of A Cowboy, my debut Desire and Top Pick from Romantic Times Magazine to one commenter today and to the second random commenter, you’ll get National Reader’s Choice Award winner, Bunking Down with the Boss. Or any other title in my available backlist.

Thanks for your support. I’d really love to hear from you today!

Lurv those cowboys...

In my opinion there is never enough cowboy stories. They're among my favorites. Glad you have a new cowboy series in the work !!

Now here are my favorite storylines (you know the kind you keep reading and reading and somehow everytime it feels new) : reunion stories, unrequited love (cowgirl next door for instence), baby deal. Emotionaly wounded cowboy works for me too ;-).

Cowboys, oh ya!

The reissue of Diana Palmer's earliest books has really resparked my love for a good cowboy story.   Her heroes are always wealthy and uber alpha.  She uses age differences in most of her books as underlying conflict.  At the time they were written (late 70's early 80's) age differences of that sort were actually fairly common, at least in my world.  But reading them today, the age difference works well as the conflict.  Now it's shuddered if a young woman of 19 or 20 were to take up with a man in his 30's.

I've also recently read Joan Johnston's Hawk's Way series ... awesome reading! ... great heroes .... all the stories revolve around ranching  .... Susan Fox also wrote some of my favourite cowboy heroes

As to why I love cowboy heroes ... well, I'm a farm girl so I do find the love of the land to be very attractive ... there's something about a man who loves good hard physical work  ... he's earned everyone of those muscles with labour he loves and not at the gym  .... and cowboys / ranchers are men of many trades ... they know a little and then a lot about so many things, from sowing seed and breeding cattle, to fixing the tractor and bargaining for the best price for the stock .... a cowboy is a man who's capable of doing just about anything he puts his mind to  ... everyday of his life, he gambles with mother nature and pits his will against hers ... takes a strength of character to engage in that battle, face the losses and strive for victories ... he's a warrior at heart and born protector not only of the land but of the people who depend on him ... he takes this role very seriously ... he may be quick to anger but his anger is always short fused ... he has a passion for creating life and finds tremendous satisfaction in looking over his day and seeing the results of his labours

Modern day cowboy's face the same issues they've always faced, drought, financial hard times, huricanes, tornados, illness and accident ... however, ranching / farming today has become "big" business, it's corporate now .... I'd love to keep that aspect in the background ... I want my cowboy hero to be that CEO but he's a traditionalist at heart .... he needs that heir to pass on the family legacy to ... beautiful women may fall at his feet and he may take advantage of that but he knows the score .. life on the land isn't for the socialites ... deep down he wants a woman to be his partner, someone who'll love the land and the values the generations before him have instilled

I'd love to read about the woman who tames the cynical rancher ... he wasn't always cynical something in his past cut him deeply .... or perhaps he knew the heroine years before and he was convinced she had betrayed him ... I love a wrongfully accused heroine where the hero has some hard lessons to learn and perhaps some delicious crow to eat!  LOL  .... I'm personally not fond of secret / hidden child stories  ... I'm not against the idea of blackmail for what the hero believes is revenge but it's really his fear of losing the heroine  ... a cowboy hero who is physically injured can be a real bear, as he'll hate his physcial weakness and he'll resent attempts to help him

ah ... rambling fingers!  ... as you can see, I love cowboys!  :)

Love Me A Cowboy...

...although probably not as much as Katherine (or Christa.) Smile   I love their integrity, honour, loyalty, their slow-talkin' drawl and crooked grins and their nurturing soul.  And even the emotionally wounded grouchy bears are gentlemen. They're well brought up, they have manners, they do the right thing by family and friends, and I love when that puts them in a position they can't escape.  They *have to* do the right thing even when it's the last thing they want.

Bron

Cowboys

I'm a Texan....of course I love cowboys!!!  I don't know if I can add anything to what Katherine said.  I'll just agree with everything she said.  However I'm not really all that enthralled with the vengeful cowboy theme.  There's just something about revenge that makes me dislike a character.  I may be unusual in that way but I have a tendency not to read that type of book.  Reunions are really enjoyable if done right, and a story about a woman needing to hide from a vengeful person who hides out on a ranch is good.  And I'm one of those readers who likes stories that have children in them.

December 2008 MEMBER of the MONTH!

A true teacher is a person who, at the end of the school day, still likes children!

I love cowboys in books.

I enjoy the high roller who is still capable of working on the ranch with the other cowboys.  There is something about a real cowboy and the way the carry themselves in real life.  You can see the difference between a real cowboy and a wanna be one.

I enjoy stories where the characters knew each other before and have lost touch and then meet up again.  i do not like the revenge stories most of the time as I can not see where you could "hate" someone and then all of a sudden decide you love them and want to spend the rest of you life with them.

Elaine

Yeehaw, Bring 'em on

Love me those cowboys. With the new Desire guigelines I understand he has to be uber-rich , but as long he's still down to earths, is not one to sit behind a desk but go out there and work the ranch. I love him. If he is an emotionally wounded H, all of of sudden the responsible of a baby is thrust upon him, MOC, the uber-rich H hiding his rich identity cause he can never be sure whether women love him for him or because he's rich, all the better

I loved Anne McAllister's Code of the West books. Unfornately with the new Desire guidlines there are some characters we are left wondering about, but I keep a vain hope that one day I'll see their stories on the shelf

Cowboys

I suppose it's because so much cowboy work is solitary (even sitting on a horse among others sitting on horses is fairly solitary), cowboys tend to have a quiet strength that I find appealing.  Also, the manners.  I love that!

As for themes, an emotionally wounded cowboy is always good.  That gives him a brooding, quiet strength.  Having the hero/heroine trapped together by physical location works for me, as well, and among my very favorites are reunion stories and/or friends-to-lovers stories.

ELLEN TOO, you are absolutely not alone in not liking revenge stories.  Revenge is such an ugly, negative motivator that I tend to shy away from people whose lives are overtaken by the desire for revenge and from stories about such people.

Hi Emmanuelle

Thanks for your input!  I truly love reunion stories and I think of the 3 stories I'm proposing, 2 are reunion stories - so that's a good thing!  I think being romantics at heart, we like to see those second chances at love!

I'm anxious to write these heroes and my editor likes the premise of all, so you may see them in 2011 - I know, it sounds so far off.

Yeehaw!!!

Are you kidding? I love cowboys. Where I live there are no cowboys whatsoever... never met one in real life, but I love reading about them.

Back when I was like five, my first crush were the Marlboro cowboys in the commercials. They would always be driving the cattle across some river, riding a horse looking so dangerous and mysterious... I could live without the cigarette part though... But even at that age (yeah, I was precocious) I could appreciate how handsome and sexy these cowboys were.

From my perspective, as a reader, it has to do with a man with big hands, strong arms who is not afraid of hard work and a little sweat. A man who loves nature/animals/outdoors but is also a ruthless businessman and a good boss. Lets not forget our cowboys are brave, hard and sexy too. Equally important is how the author presents them to us, creating this mental image of them in their body-hugging jeans (they all look sexier than hell in jeans), those shirts or t-shirts or no shirt at all (my fav)... the boots and the Stetsons. They all know how to ride horses, and manage to get 15 degrees sexier while doing so, wrestle cattle, etc. Then we add the southern drawl, the gentleman manners... youget the picture... we just love cowboys!

It doesn't matter if they are rodeo champions or CEOs... I do love it when an author gives a me different twist on a type of story I've read many times before, but I often say that as long as the story and relationship between hero and heroine are realistic enough, I will read it and most important, I will enjoy reading it.

Hi Ellen Too!

Yes, I agree about too much revenge in a story, killing it for a hero.  But a little blackmail is good for me, if it's done right.  I love baby stories, again if done right. My in-laws are from Texas,  they are PROUD TEXANS, actually and I find there aren't too many who aren't.  I've set many of my stories in Texas, both western set and contemporary.   Thanks for coming by today!! Hi TXREADER 2

I guess a lot of women aren't enjoying the revenge stories these days.  But what if the revenge, isn't aimed at the hero?   In my proposed story,  the heroine wants to seduce the hero, to hurt her step-brother, because they are bitter rivals.(hero vs step-brother)    As a result, she falls for the hero, but he doesn't trust her, because she's in the "enemy" camp per se.    I love stories where the hero and heroine have to learn to trust each other, so i guess it's really a "trust" issue more than anything else.   Cool

I like all kinds of stories, but my absolute favorites are beauty & the beast stories.

Hi Christa R

I hear you about stories left untold.  I wrote a few books set in Hope Wells, Texas for Desire and set up a really clever, appealing sheriff for my next story and because he wasn't rich and wasn't right for Desire, I couldn't write his story ... and oh, I wanted to.  I got a lot fan mail about him too, but he's shelved for now.

But we are trying to bring our Desire heroes down to earth more. Yes, they have money and power, but there's also a home and hearth part of them too, at least I try to do that.  It's because that's the type of man I like writing about.  Cool  I also like MOC a lot  and hidden identities.  Always fun!

Hi JV

Good point about a cowboy having that quiet strength. Oh so appealing.  I promise, I won't write revenge stories, but you know - our editors seem to put them in our continuities and they do soooo well.  Texan's Wedding-Night Wager is sort of that, they have been separated for five years and Cara wants a divorce, but Kevin wants her to pay for hurting and abandoning  him so he makes her a deal, to live with him for a week before he signs the divorce papers .... there's more to the story, but the readers and reviewers seem to enjoy this story.  And I did worry, I didn't want to make him too vengeful, but I also tried to let the reader know, he was still in love with her.   Cool

Hi

Regards to cowboy's books, I have not yet read many. So cant pick a favourite among them yet..

The whole aspect of the physical aspect - rugged beneath a polish exterior is what makes it spicy. Ultimately a man who knows to tame horses is obviously suited to tame women as well :) Of course its the heroine here who probably needs a little bit taming ;) Or.. other way round, the heroine rises to the occasion and proves she can be as stubborn as he can be and give as good as she takes :) - leading to a "steamy" HEA..

This is what I do love in a book ;)

I have a copy of  Texan's Wedding Night Wager but I haven't read it yet so I'll have to see if I like it.  But if he was still in love with her it might be ok.

I'm not sure about the heroine being the one seeking revenge but the scenerial that you present might work since it kinda backfires on her.

Hottie, sexy cowboys

Hi Charlene, oh, a cowboy always does it for me, especially the strong silent types. They gotta wear a black hat IMO. I love stories where the H and H  start off in animosity and are confined somewhere (I don't think forced marriages work too well in the contemporary world...) And I think a deep emotional wound is always a good thing for a guy since they usually don't weep or do primal screaming and keep it inside. A heroine getting to the bottom of it always touches my heart.

Thanks for the great blog and good luck with your new series. You know I love your books. oxoxoxox

You had my attention as soon as I saw cowboy. I really miss having cowboys in desires. Cowboys are my favorite kind of hero. I really like an emotionally wounded cowboy and H/h trapped together by physical location, and friend to lovers. I agree with others I don't particularly care for revenge stories because I always start disliking the Hero and it just ruins the book for me.

Cowboys

I'm not a great western fan in the sense that I hate to watch Westerns on TV.  But, I do love reading stories about romances involving cowboys.  I'd probably like reading one that has a mystery attached to it with a rancher with a secret agenda.  The hero & heroine could be drawn together in their effort to solve the mystery & find out the secrets of the nasty rancher.

The Susan Fox books are really good cowboy ones.

I agree with Ellen Too about the revenge when it is sleep with me or I wll ruin you.  I find that would be hard to overlook.  If you are trying to get back at someone, like in your premise, then it is different.

I do miss the sheriff books and just the regular working cowboy books.  Maybe you could make your sheriff a lottery winner and then he could still be the sheriff but be rich also. There is just something about a man who can look good in dirty jeans and then look even better in a tux that just makes women drool.

I have not met many Texans who are not proud to be from Texas.

Elaine

Hi megalon22

I've written westerns both present and modern day with a little mystery and intrigue in them. They were fun to write!!  I do enjoy it when there's more going on in the story that the love story itself, and with Desires, that's okay if it's in small doses and it doesn't take away from the hero/heroine's story.

Charlene,

I promise, I won't write revenge stories, but you know - our editors seem to put them in our continuities and they do soooo well.

Of course, I realize that you have to write books that suit the preferences of others as well, which I totally understand.  Obviously, if that theme sells extremely well, I'm in the minority on that opinion.  And I'm not saying that I'd never read a revenge theme because I have.

Without having read it, the way you describe this story, it sounds more like he's stalling for time to convince her that she doesn't really want to divorce him than like he really wants to hurt her.  I don't mind that as much.  Especially if it's obvious he's still in love with her.

I love a good cowboy story. The working on a ranch cowboy and the CEO part time cowboy, either one is OK. I think we all have a fascination with cowboys. I hope you get to write your cowboy stories for Desire.

Linda Henderson

Hi Charlene

To me, the epitome of sexy cowboy is probably Redford and Newman in Butch Cassidy. However, Kostner does a pretty good impression of -as JV says - quiet, brooding strength, manners etc - in Bodyguard. The solitary tough guy with old-time manners.

We don't get many cowboys here in NZ. Poss the closest would be the high country farmers down south in Otago - prob is, it's pretty chilly up there in the high country, any time of the year, and there aren't many low-riding, bare-chested blokes around, they all have swannis and oilskins down to their boots!! And appear in beer ads on TV. But they're certainly tough and solitary!

I really need to start reading more cowboys...and I know just where to start, Charlene!!

Good luck with your cowboy series!

I too enjoy good cowboy stories.  I enjoy stories where the girl is inept to start but learns and excels on a ranch; I also enjoy stories where the girl is quite proficient and this throws the guy for a loop (while he probably tests her).  I don't like secret agendas in "real life" and yet I will read them just fine; go figure.  Absolutely love stories where the girl and guy are trapped in a remote location.  Reunion stories are okay as long as there's a lot more to the story than that.

I don't have much else for requirements.  I figure that YOU write them and I READ them.  Works for all of us!

Cowboys

Always liked cowboy stories - remember some of my favorite stories being horse stories, which of course lead to Westerns and to cowboys - and now that I'm all grown up (and then some) find I still love a Cowboy as the hero.  Can't say much more than Katherine did though - I guess there's a reason she teased me one time about following my reading list - though its rather broad at times Laughing

I've been collecting the old series Western Lovers and have them all in one box to sit down and read in publishing order when I've got more of them!

And I thought I had the Texan's Wedding NIght Wager in my TBR, but it doesn't seem to be there - have to go check the eboutique, as it sounds REALLY good.

Mmmm cowboys

This topic came at the perfect time, thank you! I just got hooked on Diana Palmer's books. And by just, I mean I've read as many as I could get my grubby little hands on in the past two weeks and have been reading those instead of my readings for my classes! I love 'em. I didn't think I would, but I got started on some of her Long, Tall Texans series...*whew* are they good. There's just something about the setting, combined with these gorgeous cowboys who are either trying their hardest to resist the girl (because they're usually emotionally wounded) or they've got a past with the heroine. It's like the perfect recipe for a great modern cowboy book. Usually the drama is something different compared to other Desires, with more  mystery and sabotage-which is something that intrigues me as well. I would just love to see more Desire modern cowboy stories in general. With ridiculously gorgeous cowboys on the cover cause, I would really enjoy that! Laughing

Oh, Newman and Redford...

...the perfect cowboys. I was never a John Wayne fan, but Paul Newman or Robert Redford as a cowboy? Or Kevin Costner in Wyatt Earp? Or that photo you put at the start of your blog? I can see the attraction. Kiss

Cowboys

I'm finding the books that appeal the most to me at the moment are those where the hero is a cowboy or rancher. I think part of this is because we don't have cowboys here.

Personally I read modern day cowboy stories over those set in the old west, but I that has more to do with the fact that I tend to prefer reading about more recent times.

I couldn't really say what stories I would like to see the Desire line, because I like a bit of variety in my reading.
