A debut military novel, it’s set in the future when we’ve discovered multiple alien intelligences and many want to colonize the same worlds. So for those living on Earth, if they ever want to see the worlds, they need to join the army on their 75th birthday and they’ll be given the opportunity to fight for humans and then perhaps retire and begin a new life. Told from the pov of John Perry, it’s how he goes off to war and discovers new things about himself. Perry is a bit of a perfect character—even his breakdowns happen on cue!—but there is an appealing and relatable sense to what is going on. (MTH)
