One of the Boys

This is actually a Signature Select book, two stories in one book.  Each story takes place at Elgin A.F.B. in the Florida panhandle.  Each story is about a woman who invades "men's territory" but is ultimately accepted for their knowledge and contributions.

Col. Jake McAllister doesn't know what to make of Dr. Maura Phillips.  She has come to Eglin to work on a new propulsion system for the Stealth bomber.  Her work could save many lives during the First Gulf War.  However, Maura is a free-spirit whose wardrobe doesn't quite go with the Air Force uniforms.  Jake's daughter, Lisa, discovers Maura one day in a little, sheltered cove and from there a friendship is formed as they go "sharding" every afternoon.  Of course, this brings Maura into more contact with Jake and sparks begin to fly.  Only the threat of insider espinoage of the new propulsion unit and Maura's and Lisa's confrontation with the spy, finalize the union between Maura and Jake.

In the novella, Maggie also comes to Elgin as an enviromentalist working on a new propulsion fluid they plan to test.  Maggie's enviromental concerns thoroughly irritate the rest of the staff, especially Col. MacGregor.  However, one day she meets his twin sons and their shaggy dog Woof, all of whom bond with Maggie at once.  She is then pulled into their lives and closer contact, very close contact, with Mac.  He finally proposes marriage and Maggie said that she'll think about it until there is an accident at the site and Mac is burned.  Realizing how close she came to losing the best thing in her life, Maggie finally agrees to marry Mac.

I thought I'd like this book more than I did because it's set in Florida and it's about the military.  Maybe it was because of the culture shock/time warp of going from the Middle Ages to modern-day technology, but I couldn't get into the book as much as I would have liked.  Both men fit their descriptions.  The cover was appropriate.  I give the book a B.Cool
