Penneyw, you're the new winner!

Penn-eHarlequin is stepping aside, so Penneyw, you've won. Please contact me at susan@susancrosby.com.

I got to thinking about different kinds of books yesterday—scrapbooks and photo albums. I came across a scrapbook from my high school days. What a fun and funny experience paging through it. It prompted me to pull out some photo albums from when my kids were little, which made me smile as I patted the pages.

It also got me thinking about how far behind I am when it comes to organizing my photos. Years behind. It’s shameful.  My daughter-in-law is remarkably up-to-date, having separate albums for vacations and Christmas, even, plus individual albums for the children. I admire her so much for staying on top it. And her scrapbooks are clever and creative and really fun to view, even if they ARE my grandchildrenWink.

At least since I got a digital camera, the photographs are all in one place—on my computer. And I’ve gotten good about putting together photo books through iPhoto and Apple of some major vacations. The books stay on my coffee table, where I occasionally thumb through them and relive the trips. I’m afraid that the days of putting actual photos in an actual album are days that will never come again, which is sad, but I’m giving myself permission to feel okay about it.

How about you? Do you keep your photographs organized? Did child #1 get a full baby album, and child #2 and beyond get only half?

I’ll draw a winner on Friday.  Thanks!

Susan...

Great post.  But it made me a little sad, tooCry.   I used to take oldtime hardcopy pictures of everything.  And I have several albums from back in the day--the family, the kids, our trips.  Now, well, I do take the pictures with my digital camera.  Somehow, though, they never get out of my computer.  I use them in my blogs and stuff.  But never put them in an album.

Re scrapbooking.  I'm so grateful for younger son's girlfriend's mother.  She's making a scrapbook of DS2's college life and accomplishments.  At least somebody's doing it...  LOL!

Oh . . .

My mom got into scrapbooking right before I had my first child. She keeps up (I think). I, however, got two months' worth of scrapbooking done and then, ummm, none. So, the kids and I went to France for 6 weeks in the spring of '06 and I said that I would start getting things in a scrapbook (note I did not say "scrapbooking") starting with France, work my way to "caught up" and then go back to when oldest was born.

I *JUST* at the end of May finished the France bit. I'm hoping to make good progress in July. The kids and I will be at my family's for most of the month, and I shouldn't have too many projects keeping me away from the scrapbooks/albums.

One thing I decided while I was doing the France thing is that I don't want to do a fancy scrapbook like my mom and friends do. Two main reasons: 1. it takes so much time, and obviously I'm not getting it done, so shouldn't be making the task take forever, and 2. it's not really my personality -- I'm not a real flowery person. So, my albums are a cross between

  • the albums of old where the photos were just put in there and if you were lucky the dates and names were included (and if you were really lucky, what the event was) and
  • the cool scrapbooks that others do. It works for me (and dh). We pick the best pics and write up who/what/when/where and I tend to put a little story to it, if there is one, and there we go.

I still don't have a digital camera (well, I do but it's cheap and I don't know where the cords are to download what's on it -- that's why there is still a pic of a yellow rose and not me here in the communitySurprised). I leave dh to do the research on such things and every Sunday when the sales flyers come with the paper, I find a camera on sale and ask if it's what we want and he keeps saying, "No." Really, I told him, I'm going to go out and buy my own, so he'd better just decide to bite the bullet and make do for now.

PS -- I assume you're really good at backing everything up. Authors all have horror stories of a friend losing a whole book, so I assume you do a thorough backup, but my oldest's teacher's house was robbed in January and they didn't have backups. Lost all the pics of their one-year-old and her dh's doctoral thesis. And everything else, but those were the things that really hurt.

First, Penn, I can't help remarking on your pun (possibly unintentional) at the end of your post about staying "focused".  A little double entendre there, both fitting the subject!

Susan, I love, love, LOVE pictures, but I'm truly horrible at getting them organized.  The one exception was when a friend and I went to Europe in 1980 and again in 1983.  I carefully recorded each picture I took and what it was in a pocket notebook, and after developing them, I put them all into an album with notations on them.  Prior to that I had stuck some pictures into either slip-in albums or the old sticky page type with a clear sheet that holds the pictures in through static cling or something, but never anything terribly organized.

Since then, even though I've taken literally thousands of pictures (maybe even tens of thousands), they lie around in the envelopes the developers put them in.  Seriously, when DD was little, I used to see photos of missing children that said they were taken a year or two prior to the time the child went missing.  (I assume that was because the family didn't have a more recent picture.)  I always thought that, heaven forbid, if DD ever went missing, I'd have to ask the police which of the 200 or so pictures we took of her that month they wanted to use.  Literally, the women at the photo counter in my grocery knew me by name and would call me when my photos were in.  That's how many we took!

Now, I have a wonderful SLR digital camera, and I'm very thankful that those pictures are at least organized by date or event in folders on our computer.  We used to be very good about backing them up, but I'd better check with DH to make sure he's done that recently.  I do periodically go through and look at them, and I'd be heartbroken to lose any of them.  Last fall we had a little flooding problem that ruined some printed pictures that had been sitting in a cardboard box on the floor in our office-like room (along with the negatives), and it broke my heart!

This past Christmas, DH gave me a really nice digital picture frame, and I've enjoyed it so much!  Not only can I showcase a whole bunch of pictures in one frame, but I actually get to see them every day (as the frame sits here beside my laptop in the living room) and guests get to see them, too!

Do you keep your photographs organized?

I try. But I don't have different albums for different types of photos. I just put them in the albums in the same order they have been taken.

I have my pics organized

I have my pics organized online and older photos are in albums.

Do you keep your photographs organized? Did child #1 get a full baby album, and child #2 and beyond get only half?

You brought a lil gulit trip that I have with this topic. I have two children. My daughter was first and she has a book with hosptial picture time, weight and other information about her birth. Her book has lots of baby pictures. My son has one baby picture and the rest are pictures with his sister. No album of his own. Cry The topic actually comes up every now and then and I have no excuse to offer.

pictures

I love pictures, they capture moments so you can remember them. I have all my baseball pictures and my gradutation pictures in order, but everything else not so much. There's just so many that I don't have them in an order. The good thing is I put the year on the back so I at least know the year they were from. My mom has a album from kindergarten to 6th grade for my brother and I. I like looking at them see what we did and how we've changed since then.

Pictures

I afraid my photos still need to be organized.  I think I know where most of them are.

Organizing photographs is a

Organizing photographs is a retirement project and since retirement is so far away on the horizon I am overwhelmed by the project already.

I did manage to create a memory album for each (of three) daughter after we went to Disney World. But I was only working part-time when we went in the 90s.

I have one daughter that loves to look at photographs and she made a mess of the loss organization I once had. Surprised

Weird scrapbooks

Hey, Susan--what a fun post!  I've kept scrapbooks for trips I've taken, but I was never into the more traditional "This is my life" books.  As a matter of fact, when I was in grade school, I kept a scrapbook of Disneyland pictures.  And no people were in the photos, LOL.  I guess it was my "happy place" that I would go to when I needed it, because I was (and still am) a Disney lover.

But that's what scrapbooks are for--a place to keep treasured things.Smile

Ouch! I'm sooo far behind

organizing my pictures... and now with DH using digital nearly 100% of the time it's even worse.

I've gotta do something though... it's been ages since I've added anything to any albums.
And I would *like* to do an album for each of my children ~ as my parents did for all 6 of us Surprised...
but yeah, I think that harks back to the organize part.  *sigh*

I only have one child.    All her photos are in albums, I even did a couple of scrapbooks when she was a baby.  Since we got our digital camera in 2006, I now store all our digital pictures on Shutterfly.  I made a photo book when we took our cruise in 2007 and I did a 2nd grade photo book too.  I also made a photo CD with pictures set to music.   I love taking pictures, so digital photos are much easier to organize.

Oh, those photos...

Christine--I agree. At least someone is doing it. I love having a visual record of people and events. You'd think it would make me be better at organizing it all. Maybe, as most of us are saying, when I retire. Wink

Penn--The point is, you DID get it finished. That counts for a lot. And I would construct scrapbooks the same way as you've decided to. All my old photo albums don't have the acid-free paper, and my photos are faded and glued forever to the pages with the sticky background. Ugh. And thanks for the reminder about backing up. At the moment, I've kept my photos on the memory sticks and my work on flash drives, but I've been making noise about getting a good backup system. I appreciate the kick in the pants about it!

Oh, those photos 2...

JV--I just remembered the two scrapbooks I put together of a trip to London and a driving trip through the south. I was really good about writing down a description of every photo I took on the trip, and adding clever stuff, so that I could make the books. They're not like the scrapbooks of today, but they still provide a ton of memories. Those digital frames are a fabulous idea. I'm going to get one now, for sure.

Minna--That's how all my photos are, too. Just in sequence, most without a caption, and most of the dates written on the back, which is impossible to see because I can't peel them off the page without damaging them!

Star0925--I hear you! I was third born in the family, and my book got short shrift, too, so I did make sure to give DS #2 a filled-in baby book. If I'd more than two kids, however...? It's anybody's guessSmile

nicolerko--Baseball photos?  I think I need an explanation, please Smile.

Chey--You THINK you know where they are? LOL. Me, too! I think most are in a couple of boxes, but I know a lot are scattered. I wish you luck!

Scrapbooks, etc.

Chris/Crystal--I love that! It's a place to keep treasured things. That is absolutely perfect. I did notice that my high school scrapbook was mostly stuff, and very few photos. I just hadn't thought about it in that way. Thank you!

Kalyko--At least you're in good company, along with the rest us not-yet-organized, but well intended people!

baseball pictures

I go see the monior league baseball team play. So every year my grandma and I take a lot of pictures of the players so we can remember all the guys down the road. A lot of them now play for the Minnesota Twins. So basically it's just pictures of ball players, I even have one as my picture on here.

I see!

Thank you, Nicole.  That explains everything.  How fun for you to see them hit the majors and remember them when!

I used to be really good

I used to be really good about it until after kid #2.  I still have undeveloped film rolls kicking around that I need to deal with.  Ugh.  I think sorting through the photos and memory boxes is going to be a winter project after the kids are grown and gone.  Either that or they're going to have to help with it.  To be quite honest, the only reason I ever did any of that is because I felt it was "expected" of me.  I don't enjoy trips down memory lane.  Too many regrets.  Should have spent more time playing and less time working.  Yada, yada.

I not organized

The only photo album that is organized is my honeymoon and that was almost 11  years ago. I do have some of my kids picture of when they was born in albums but after that I'm been a bad mother. All my pictures are in a box that I neeed to get organized in my spare time from work, kids running here and there, supper etc.!!!

Cheryl

I'm such a slug

I have a book with wedding and shower pictures which I didn't take.  When the boys were born (18 months apart) I took a ton of pictures.  We have a billion of both of them when they were small, probably because they were so close together.

Six years ago, my oldest graduated from pre-school.  We bought a new digital camera.  It broke during the ceremony.  I cried.  We have a few pictures of that day, but not many.  The store replaced the camera and we used that for a while. I didn't like the camera and really cut down on taking pictures.  The battery wouldn't be charged, or the stupid thing would be full or something else would go wrong.  Now at school events, my friends who are also parents just take pictures of my kids and give them to me.

I know I have to get a real camera.  You know, one with film.  I remember the good old days when you took a roll of film to K-Mart on Tuesday and they gave you two sets for the price of one.

So now I promise myself to get a camera and start taking pictures of my kids.  I'll get them developed and stick them in the box with the rest.

Baby steps.

Sorry I'm late...

I meant to be back yesterday and choose a winner, but life got in the way.

MickiB--I like your honesty. I think we're all on overload for what's expected from us, and we have to make our own choices. Good for you!

Cheryl/Heartland--One of these days, right Wink? That same kind of box sits in my garage, too.

kathleen g--Baby steps, indeed. That's the way to do anything. I wouldn't give up totally on digital cameras, however. They beat film cameras in so many ways, not the least of which is taking 100 shots and choosing your favorite right on the spot--or seeing if it needs retaking. That's the biggest advantage to me. But I sure do understand your frustration.
