i love romance! i love the build-up and the tension. i had heard that jane austen was the godmother of romance.
after all of the "classics" that i had to read in high school and college, i have adopted an attitude that i only want to read for pleasure. i started reading this book with an attitude of, oh well, if i don't like it...i can always put it down.
but i could not put it down! at times the language was a little hard for me to interpret and i had to think about what she meant, but as far as the story and the tension...i got so caught up that i started putting the book in my cookbook holder and reading while i cooked! i read every chance i could get!
i hated mr. darcy at first. i thought he was such a cad. how he got her sister away from that other man and what he had done to the poor soldier! but then when i realized his reasons...and how much he loved Elizabeth. i was so relieved when she realized that she loved him.
i can definitely see why Jane Austen is called the godmother of the romance genre. the pattern of this novel is so similar to many modern-day romances. Jane was wonderful at really building the tension.
the only thing i have to say is that it did feel a little contrived at times. it was a little too easy. a little too unrealistic. but it made for a wonderful read!
if you have ever been a little embarrassed about your lack of knowledge when it came to the classics, i dare say you should pick up this book!

Pride and prejudice
I adore Pride and Prejudice and have read it many times. Persausion is probably her next best novel in my opinion followed by Northanger Abbey and Emma. Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park are my least favourite. It is also fasinating reading the books which have been produced about her life and times. It was P and P which first gave me a love of reading for pleasure even though it was a set book for a state exam and I'm Dyslexic.
Worth the time
I'm glad you enjoyed P&P. I would recommend reading the other five of her novels, because they're all different, at least once.

I have this on my shelf
I have never read it, but have seen a few screen adaptations, including Bride and Prejudice.

Jane Austen
I love her books. I was a teenager the first time that I read her books and they were so engrossing. The first line of this book "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that single man in possession of a fortune must be in want of a wife." is one of the to three best first lines in literature. I just love it.
