P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern (Hyperion, 2004)

This first offering from young author Cecelia Ahern was made into a recently-released movie by the same name.

The Basics: Holly Kennedy is lost after the death of her husband, Gerry Clarke, who died of a brain tumor at the tender age of thirty years. A short time after his death, Holly is given a letter from her husband with ten envelopes inside. Inside each envelope is a task Holly must accomplish during a particular month. These tasks help Holly learn to live without her husband.

My take: This was not a bad read. The storyline was great, and that’s what kept me turning the pages. The writing was patchy; some parts were really rough, others so good I couldn’t put the book down. Ahern had a tendency to jump from one scene to another with no break or lead in, which was rather disconcerting. For example, near the front of the book, Holly thinks about making an appointment to have her hair done, and in the very next sentence, she’s at the salon. The character development was decent (it would’ve helped if Holly weren’t such a self-centered, weak-kneed ninny…things she never overcame). Still, it was a touching story, and certainly a solid start for Ahern’s career.

My rating: 2.5/5

But would she have got published

if she weren't Bertie's daughter?

a lot of Irish people asked themselves that one

Haven't read this one, may pick it up when we're in Ireland this summer

No more excuses, just READ!

Hmm....

After I read her bio, I wondered the same thing, especially since her parentage was the second item mentioned. I was surprised by that, since I only picked the book up because I couldn't see the movie.
